Levi could sing ANYTHING, make it sound soulful, raw and operatic all at the same time. He was even better than Wilson Pickett was, and that's saying a lot, cuz Wilson was superb!

"Bernadette" was written by an Italian fellow who approached Berry Gordy and I guess Holland, Lamont Dozier and the Four Tops. Levi was skeptical about the song, but he heard some of the lyrics in Italian to "get a message across." This was according to Levi in the Motown 5-album set that came out in the early seventies (I have that set, many artists were interviewed, and it's a great album set).

@@nancyhanley6558 Italian fellow? The credited songwriters are Holland-Dozier-Holland, and your comment is the first account I've ever heard of any Italian guy, the only reference I could find to anything Italian was this interview excerpt with Lamont Dozier on Songfacts: "So was there really a "Bernadette"? Yes, and more than one. Dozier explained to Hits magazine in 2003: "There were three Bernadettes, and they were all different girls. We sorta kept that to ourselves that we all had our own Bernadette. We always said, we'd never bring a girlfriend's name into the songs. We had this hidden thing when the name came up, so we didn't say anything. So at least two of us were thinking about the Bernadettes we knew." In Dozier's case, "Bernadette" was inspired by his unrequited love for a girl when he was 12; a "beautiful Italian girl with eyes for somebody else."

Different. Not better. Each was exceptional in his own way. I am more of a fan of Levi; however, David Ruffin was also at the top of his game.
