For all of you spouting "cultchah" I again say....sparklers and firecrackers were culture...Upgrading that to potential bombs in amateur hands...is just lolo Aerials were stuff we watched from a beach somewhere...blown up by pros. Not by partying people in yards

In Asian culture, the only fireworks they used to celebrate the New Year were firecrackers. Not smokey sparklers, fountains, etc. and certainly no aerials.

@SamWesting Those silly little grey stick sparklers weren't all that smokey...and those were a staple since my mom's youth. Also..SAFETY was taught to us since diaper days. Our families engrained in us that it's all fun and games until someone gets hurt. So we were TRAINED!!! by our..less party hardy ohana...to be careful and follow the rules.First with an adult guiding our hands etc. Second.we could only use those sparklers..until we proved we could be trusted to be cautious........or we didn't get to join in ANY of the fun! That was tradition. Not this Kailua 4 th of July grade nonsense in packed neighborhoods

@SamWesting But YES...I agree!...all those shooting sparklers and weird things that spun and ended up where ever they ended up.. usually in a dangerous place...which graduated into Roman candles and all the other stuff....not so cultural. Just dangerous and kinda dumb Again if you have acres of open space...ok...maybe. But not feet away from everyone and their homes. I mean who pays for all those car windows and home damage to the neighbors? property?

@@PoiDog2266 I beg to differ. The smoke generated by thousands of sparklers being used on NYE accumulates, to the point that by next morning, it looks like smog. In Kalihi or Nuuanu Valley, you can’t even see the mountains. That hasn’t been a problem since the sparkler ban.

Illegal or banned? Or. Illegal cause its banned? Hawaii needs to regulate it. Give the people what they want make all consumer fireworks legal like other states. I understand yes leave the pro stuff to licensed professionals. (Lots of ariels are consumer grade for those that dont know) Put a 100% greedy state tax on fireworks and make your money. Make people take a safety class and get a certificate of completion like hunter education. Teach people the proper ways and safe handling and only then you are able to buy fireworks with a certificate of completion. You do it for hunting. Enforce it to only New Years since thats when Hawaii does it big. If you get caught outside that time you get a fine or time or something. When you use or are around people that use fireworks you know the risk involved. Life is full of risk. You take a risk everyday in life walking outside your house, walking around the block, driving your car, going to the beach. They all have risk and you know that. What are you gonna do banned driving or going to the beach? How many people die or get hurt driving or in the ocean every year? Better look to make driving illegal. How many vehicle related injuries/deaths this year already.
