I'm 80. We've been going back and forth about this. People don't really care if there are casualties, from what I see. We outlawed fireworks, and folks ignored the law. That was after a little boy died in his mother's arms within seconds of being hit by shrapnel from one firecracker in a tin can. For a moment, we thought one life mattered; and we wanted to prevent this from happening. But it's hard to care about each other when we are addicted to excitement and noise. Add to that the pain and suffering of war veterans, highly sensitive people, people with PTSD, autistic people, cats, dogs, birds, and other wildlife. This amount of suffering just isn't enough to make us want to stop.

Tragic events occur, and a law are passed to prevent them from happening again. No tragedies happen, and after a while, people forget why the law was passed in the first place. So, they start to ignore the law. At which point, Santayana's Law inevitably comes into force, and we are doomed to repeat the tragedy. It's not just one thing, or another, it's more or less every thing. It's just how easily we forget.

As a Lahaina Fires survivor I can not understand how people this new year and last 4th of July thought it was a good idea to throw fireworks… Everyone knows the reasons for the Lahaina Fires weren’t related to fireworks, but why you want to risk it when the dry grass is already there… How many more injuries, many of them on children with consequences FOR LIFE we need to tolerate to change the way we have fun.

I agree with you. Also remaining Lahaina residents should respect their neighbors who lost their homes and family members by also not participating in these illegal activities. It’s hypocritical of Those who are a part of this to demand anything from anyone in regards to the Lahaina fires while putting the remaining residents at risk for the same thing. As a community Lahaina should seek to ban all pyrotechnic devices including illegal fireworks and use the neighborhood watch model to assure it stops.

I believe you are mistaken. I live in a suburb of Salt Lake co. Utah, aerial fireworks are legal here, about 8 years ago my neighbor across the street had a friend working for the fireworks retailer and he purchased a bunch of fireworks over a period of several days, because our state holiday is two weeks after the 4th of July, he managed to buy enough to have a stack of them in his garage, 2 feet wide 5 - 6 feet long and 4 feet high. One night he started setting them off in the street one at a time with family and friends sitting near the front stoop, about 5 into it and it fell over, they have several pops in one and it was shooting straight into his audience. I witnessed several silhouettes of individuals jumping out of their seats trying to dodge the explosions. I laughed historically but when the smoke settled I realized that the garage pile was probably 6 to ten feet from disaster. My neighbor has never lit off fireworks since then, someone above sent a clear message and he got it loud and clear.

Government must ban the sale of fireworks to individuals because setting off fireworks can be dangerous and harmful to people, animals, and the environment. We have selfish, inconsiderate and stupid parents with their equally selfish, inconsiderate and stupid children who let off fireworks near our houses a few times a year when it is allowed by our incompetent and stupid government. This always made the rest of us neighbors feel very anxious and worried because the fireworks could lend on our houses and burn our houses down. 🤬
