An issue with ducks and other waterfowl (geese in particular) is that they're basically fertiliser production machines, as such this can cause chaos with your water quality in the forms of big nitrate/phosphate spikes leading to algae blooms. The more alkali your water, the worse this problem can be particularly in regards to ammonia build up as ammonium (relatively safe) converts to ammonia (extremely toxic at low concentration) as the pH climbs. We've always limited waterfowl populations for this reason. Aquatic oxygenators will help keep the nitrate/phosphate balance under control much better than marginals (marginals filter inflow but don't do much for water already in the lake) but the issue is that the really good ones are also super aggressive and will require frequent management to stop them taking over. Be mindful that when raking/cutting you've got to remove as much as possible from the water and compost it somewhere downstream of the lake where it can't leech those trapped nutrients back in. Be cautious with lilies if you're planning on introducing them, they look nice but they're not great for water quality (reduces sunlight and wind action), they can also spread like wildfire in 2-6ft of water and are a pig to remove because if you don't get the tubers out, you've only inconvenienced them. In terms of your balancing pipe I'd perhaps consider a style of siphon that pulls water from the bottom rather than the top. It's basically a larger diameter capped pipe that goes over the top of your vertical pipe so it acts sort of like a reverse shower trap. The idea of this is so you're not removing the oxygenated top layer of water when draining, this will help minimise fish stress. Looks like you're doing a grand job though and I look forward to seeing the site develop
@ChrisShortyAllen8 ай бұрын
You missed barley straw. Superb for water quality. Fish excrete as well. Excess bait. Over stocking. Always remove warm water to reduce fish stress.

The dye will be most effective when put in around the start of February, before photo synthesis kicks in .. I used it on a lake I ran stuffed with Canadian pond weed , unfortunately the lake was porous , best advice I can give you is make sure to provide the anglers with your own landing nets slings etc .. make sure they dip their reels in a tank with jeyes fluid just to be extra safe , you only need a cup full to about 500 litres of water make sure it's well deluted, weed is a nightmare mate really is
@benedictfowler11 ай бұрын
Thanks so much dude! Maybe its time at the minute to top it up again! Nets and slings will be provided by us! So anglers don’t have to bring any!

@randymch9 ай бұрын
What blue dye product did you use? I'm spending a fortune on smaller bottles (our lake soaks away into the sandy soil seasonally), would be good to know where to buy the big containers.
@ChrisShortyAllen8 ай бұрын
You need less dye and more water. Your lake is merely a seasonal puddle.
@randymch8 ай бұрын
@@ChrisShortyAllen- a seasonal puddle that needs control of algae bloom. Not the most helpful of comments mate. It's always a lake, never dries up, just fluctuates in water depth from 7ft to about 3ft.

When will the next vid be up roughly?
@majmat11 ай бұрын
If you want to stop algae put bales of barley straw in, 5-6 bales would work in a pond that size, make sure you anchor the bales, or tie them to the side. You need to get oxygenating plants/weed. I hate that dye when theres natural ways of doing it.
