I can definitely see this in my future …. I’m a huge fan of Fox knives . My favorite ( so far ), is the Fox 140 XL . Everything is just about perfect. ( but the sheath not so much ). I’m just a big fan of the knives made in Italy . ( I did a video of them about a year ago - just a once over video - not a full review ). Thanks so much for posting this . I’ve been eyeballing this beautiful beast for too long now .

MesserTalk Hi there, thanks for watching and your comments. Yes the Italians do make some great knives and whilst it's kind of a policy here on BCT not to mention or compare prices as they really are dependent on where u are living and what access one has to buying them etc etc, I will say that I think u can get good value for money with some Italian knife manufacturers products with what I would call premium stainless steels. Re he outside testing. Yeah I just happen to be in a good position to spend some months each year in the wilds of both hemisphere

I know your review of this knife is now a few years old, but I was hoping to supplement your field evaluation of the Combat Jungle with one of my own. I have recently decided to start my own blog and I fully intend to eventually do a review of this knife, except I will be field testing it outdoors in the Canadian Rockies next winter when temps drop below -30 so that some cold weather tasks can be conducted to see how the blade performs in extreme conditions. I don't plan to abuse the knife excessively, but do intend to subject it to the typical rigours that would be expected for survival and bushcraft purposes in a more northern climate. This may be the ultimate irony for the Combat "Jungle" but I think it would be a good testament to the 4 season capabilities of the knife. And if you found value in my results, perhaps you think it would be worth consolidating the information with yours. Great video by the way -I have probably viewed it only about 20 times (or so). Cheers from Northern Alberta

After all, a knife is only as good as the stuff you do with it! This is only the second video from you that I've watched, and you're drawing my attention for several reasons. First off I have that knife and have only used it once because I didn't want to damage a nice Italian knife, but it seems from watching you work that it's more capable than I thought. The other thing is I had friend from New Zealand and I told him once he sounds Australian and he laughed at me saying they don't sound anything alike. I may be jumping to conclusions but judging by the terrain and the way you look and speak I'm going to say you are a Maori man living in New Zealand. Maybe you could tell me that secret when you have time. I did enjoy your video and have subscribed. Have a good day. Mike

Hi, Im very impressed with your reviews, pretty much covers every aspect a knife would do!! I have a question, Im hesitating between the dobermann IV and the Fox Combat Jungle. What would you recomend better?
@BushCampingTools7 жыл бұрын
I like them both, the FKMD is a bit lighter and there is def a different feel from micarta to forprene. Then forprene might be better if you live in a cold climate or intend to go outdoors in cold weather a lot. Both use the same steel, the FKMB might be a bit easier to sharpen, depends on how good you are at sharpening. FKMD Combat Jungle whilst def not a hunting blade might fare a bit better for skinning. The Dobermann IV is very strong. The added pouch on the Combat Jungle sheath is a good idea. U need to add one which is Molle comp if u want to carry one on the ER knife. Try and pick up and handle each knife and see how they feel.

Great review as always! This is an old review but hope you will answer anyway. Witch would you prefer, fox combat jungle or fox parang bushcraft. I should fit between my hatchet and my mora. I like the design and length of the combat jungle but is the parang better for chopping and is i more durable. What is your opinion???
@jeppelarsen18494 жыл бұрын
Also the combat jungle has a better tip. Is that a big deal?
@BushCampingTools4 жыл бұрын
Hi there. Here at BCT I will always try to answer viewer's comments (if they are not swearing at me or others here or slagging me just for the heck of it). Ok to answer your question, let me see if I have understood you; you have a hatchet so it can do the real heavy work and the Mora for general run of the mill camp stuff etc. If you didn't have the hatchet and didn't want to use one or buy one, then I'd say go for the Parang but since you already have a hatchet I'd go for the combat jungle. It is a vey comfortable knife and very capable knife, well designed (originator of the design is from Moletta - but modified by FOX) Whilst I don't own the parang bushcraft it appears from many videos to be not too bad for chopping and certainly also appears to have more "bulk to it than the combat jungle although I would say both would do equally as well in the tropical environment, with the combat jungle doing slightly better for butchering and fishing stuff (albeit neither a fish knife nor a butchering knife). I guess what I'm saying is it really depends upon the environment you are going into and what you plan to do with either of them. As far as strength goes, I think you would find both are of adequate strength and durability. Thanks for watching!
@jeppelarsen18494 жыл бұрын
Hi. Thanks for taking time to answer. My idea with the knife was if I wanted to leave the hatchet i could take it to do the "heavy" stuff. I live in denmark so the nature isent that big and wild. It would be for processing firewood and a bit of fine work. A god Allrounder the can take a beating without it breaking. I have also looked at Extrema Ratio and fallkniven but the same size knife from the 2 brands is almost double the money were i live, but I don't think they are double as good.
@Camrographer8 жыл бұрын
I really enjoyed the immersive review. You take it beyond simple batoning. And the tips and tricks you give, further flesh out the experience. Look forward to the next reviews. PS, given that you try not to baton with your knife, do you carry a hatchet as a chopping tool? Secondly, what size of knife is reasonable to carry? Does a knife become cumbersome on extended treks? Thanks.
@BushCampingTools8 жыл бұрын
Hi thanks for your comments! I try to do this with most of my reviews in order for viewers to get exactly what you have said from my reviews. If I go out for just 2 or 3 days I might only carry a medium to large (7Inch knive max) with me, if this wasn't in the tropics. If I go on much longer hikes and carry a tent I might also take a 7 inch knife if I knew I would be fishing and or hunting. If I was was only hunting and camping not far from a vehicle then I may only take a hunting knife (say 4 inches and below).For an extended trip of over 5 days no support then my pack could weigh up to 20Kg, so carrying too big a knife would be just adding that much more weight. The weight is important for longer trips over arduous terrain and definitely something to consider. I'm not into nor have never been into the reduction of pack weight by "cutting toothbrushes in half" etc but again boot weight is also something important to consider. All these things depend on the terrain and environment you plan to travel in. As far as taking hatchets, I don't although as a child my father always carried one as well as two smaller hunting knives. He only used it for busting up wood for fires, not shelter building etc. As far as what is reasonable to carry this depends on so many things. These days, society has been panicked by the media over knife crime and in some countries it is of course illegal to carry any knives without the most rock solid reasons of justification. Carrying a big knife on your waist even in the wilds but where for example many people trek/hike can sometimes alarm the "alarmable"*! *(I know there is no such a word but it seems to fit my explanation). This has on occasion happened to me even in the middle of nowhere in New Zealand on such an extended unsupported hike/trek. My point is you can only be the judge of this. I would say in situations like this , better to carry a bigger knife within the pack and bring it out only when required. If however, you are in a place like I am now then no one will bat an eyelid if I walk down the main street with a 7 inch blade strapped to my side, it just depends. So in a rather long answer to you I prefer not to carry anything longer than 7 inches max. UNLESS I am travelling and working in the tropics then I will definitely be carrying a local machete and maybe folder of the multitool type. I could write a book about why this would be my choice and has been in past trips but that's for another day. Hope this helps.

It's lack of a full flat spine had me a bit concerned. But it's good to see that it's easily capable of batoning if needed. I love my ESEE 6. But wish there was a S.S. version of it. This Fox knives model is apparently as close as I'm going to get to that.
@BushCampingTools8 жыл бұрын
You know I love those ESEE series of knives but what stops me buying them is they are made from plain old 1095, I love this steel but not at that price. 1095 costs the manufacturer nothing to buy and I'm not even sure if this is 1095 sourced from outside of the US, making it even cheaper to make their knives. If they made them in SS of some variety they would be good too for those working around wet environments a lot. Don't get me wrong, I love my 1095 blades for sure. Yes the FKMD combat Jungle is a very capable knife and I deliberated over it for several years LOL simply because of the spine design but it is very strong and capable and of course you guys and gals saw just a fraction of what I did with this knife, some might call abuse and I generally don't like showing this as I think it gives people who don't know much about proper use of blades, the wrong impressions. However, I think you would not be disappointed with it's performance and handling. N690 is in my much field tested opinion, a great stainless tool steel that really shines as a good steel for knife manufacture.
@NGMonocrom8 жыл бұрын
Bush Camping Tools Ironically, ESEE makes their ESEE 4 in a S.S. option (440C). But they refuse to do the same for their more capable ESEE 6. Just frustrating. Oh well, looks like Fox Knives will soon be getting some of my money. Thank you for the reply above. I appreciate it.
@BushCampingTools8 жыл бұрын
Hi, ok thanks for that. I thought all their stuff was in 1095, so thanks for that info. I guess if they did do the ESEE6 in stainless then they might have to change quite a few things re the tooling, heat treatment etc and may not be worth their while as they sell so many of their other lines.
@NGMonocrom8 жыл бұрын
Bush Camping Tools On their webswite, ESEE mentions that S.S. cannot take as much hard use as 1095. That it can't handle the shock of heavy chopping. Thus, you get a more limited warranty with their S.S. variations. It's also why their smaller models get the S.S. options only. Like the ESEE 4 and the Izula II models. But that seems silly to me as I've seen large blades made out of 440C / N-695, easily cut down small trees with no issues to the blade. ESEE seems to think that 440C is made of glass, instead of steel.
@BushCampingTools8 жыл бұрын
Sadly I feel this is just an excuse from them. Impact resistance from SS knives made out of for example: 440C/N695; N690, ATS34; 12C28N, ELMAX, etc. etc. do not simply break when hit from a baton-UNLESS there is poor heat treating/too high Rockwell hardness. Any steel that is "glass hard", (actually a term metallurgists use for very brittle state), will bust if struck/dropped and this is as a metallurgist, who was our neighbour across the street where I grew up told me as a teenager, when my dad sent him some tools for testing. It all depends on the ultimate HRC Vs toughness . Try smashing a ball bearing made out of 440C and see how it breaks so easily, NOT. But as I said they would need to change many heat treating parameters and tooling parameters in order to make the products from a martensitic stainless steel as apposed to common (and good of course, cheap and easily available 1095). I find there is a real marketing hype behind 1095 pervasive worldwide to keep it from floundering amongst the marketing hype from the powder metallurgical side. I find when I flummoxed by marketing hype from any manufacturer, I usually go straight to the metal manufacturers website and read their technical PDF's. Many raw material manufacturers would be very surprised by those statements on their web site LOL!

great review. How does this compare to the lion steel m7? it seems to lose alot of thrusting and prying ability.
@BushCampingTools9 жыл бұрын
+Andrew Hannam It's lighter than the LionSteel M7. I think but have no scientific data to back this up but the Sleipner steel seems to hold an edge longer but that of course will mean harder to sharpen. As for prying the M7 might be better. I feel too the M7 handle at least in my hands feels more comfortable but maybe not as grippy as the Combat Jungle. They are both nice blades. I deliberated for weeks over the M7 before purchasing it LOL!

Bush Camping Tools I often dig with my knife. Not for hardcore survival, just for eating roots (or making wild coffee) or having fun with the building of a dakota fire. I can't find a good shovel under 600g. The last one i used died: folded (was a CAO mini folding shovel/pick). So... I use my knife. I am not happy with my ESEE6 for some reasons, but when i hit a rock with this knife, the steel just roll. It is easy to resharpen it. Yes, the belly of my knife is not "razor sharp" but i don't care...
@SUPERCUREU1L9 жыл бұрын
Tacticraft chaine bushcraft I ask because... I am not a metallurgist. I don't know the N690 nor the heat treatment of fox. Lets talk about a matter of taste: fallkniven steel maybe very good, very resilient and hold an edge like hell. For my usefullness, it is far too hard and tend to chip. On big multi purpose knives, I prefer softer steel, more "machete like".
@diderichlangmannen6 жыл бұрын
Hey Frances, After all this time ... have you ever had any problems with the steel??? I have this knife too and I have contact to a guy from Austria (who is also doing KZbin reviews of knives) who has some problems with the blade steel. Would be interesting to find out if Fox would have variations of the heat treatment of the steel they use. Greetings from the south of France.
@BushCampingTools6 жыл бұрын
Hi Diderich, no, never had any trouble with this knife. I've really given it the treatment and no chipping, breaking of tip etc. It stays very sharp. I love N690, although I prefer it hardened to around HRC58 and not higher as it can be a pain to sharpen at higher Rockwell (although just takes a little longer). I prefer FKMD just to use this type of Teflon coating too rather than Cerakote. The only negative thing I have found with Fox is that some of their scabbards are not so well thought out. (this one for the Combat Jungle though is good- not excellent but it's very good).
@diderichlangmannen6 жыл бұрын
Bush Camping Tools The same for me, Frances! I own several different knives from Fox / FKMD and never had any problems. I‘m agree with you when it comes to the hardness of the steel! I love N690 but when it‘s to hard it starts to make problems. The same with Sleipner (for example) witch is a superb steel but when it is just a little bit to hard it starts to chip. @BushCampingTools9 жыл бұрын
+Michele Trekkning Hi thanks for watching. Yes I truly believe this knife to be well made and as for edge holding and durability it is a good choice if you like big knives. A little too big for specifically hunting but ok if you have to. A good general large camp knife for wilderness situations. I have used more the Fox Trapper FX132 and it has the same handle. I have had no problems with that knife either. You might eventually change the flat bevel grind if one desires.
@southwave52119 жыл бұрын
Which one would you recommend for survival situations? This one, or the trapper?
@BushCampingTools9 жыл бұрын
+South Wave Hi I have both but prefer the Trapper, it's shorter, heavy enough to chop with, can skin, etc with it. Unconventional blade so requires different sharpening techniques compared with the more traditional FX133 (which i like too of course :))
@southwave52119 жыл бұрын
You are right about that. The Trapper is like 3 different blades in one. Sharpening is an issue I didn't think about it. Hope it's not so hard.
@BushCampingTools9 жыл бұрын
+South Wave I should say however, that since both of these tangs are milled out they can possible retain water/moisture inside the grip. Ok N690 is stainless but not sure how this would go over long term on coastal situations/islands (I've done the latter too), which means you have to remove the grip if you submerge the knife, i.e. using it as a diving knife. All that being said I have used my old and faithful Ontario Spec Plus as a temporary dive knife on an island but had later had a chance to soak it in fresh water and that knife steel is 1095. I think I would be confident basically with either of these two knives but as I said prefer the Trapper as it is just a bit smaller but a very versatile knife at least in my hands.
@southwave52119 жыл бұрын
I know what you mean. Salty water is a big enemy to any kind of steel. I use diving knifes for that purpose though. And yes. I wouldn't recommend a day to pass without soaking your knife in fresh water since you used in the sea. I even do that with my g shocks :-D
@BushCampingTools9 жыл бұрын
Yep me too the dive watch gets a soaking too. In fact I'm a bit crazy about looking after the gear after a saltwater epic. As you know all stainless will corrode if given enough exposure over time.

@BushCampingTools9 жыл бұрын
+paulie 4x Not as yet but they both have different edges one machine ground, the FOX and of course the ERs are all hand ground. I think rather the hand ground ones are easier to sharpen by hand alone and the Fox with this machine ground edges are better suited to using a sharpening device of whatever is ones preference; primarily so as to maintain an accurate bevel angle on each side but that's just my opinion and i usually use any method depends on where I am e.g. in the field or at home.

Mustafa Mikari Yeah but they take time and cost me lots of ghoulash. AS u are no doubt aware I really use the knives I present here and are not churning out hundreds of desk top reviews so I can bring all of u guys the best possible evaluation based on a reasonable period of usage in real life situations (at least for me LOL).

Hi LOL, I wanted that knife for ages and ages and wasn't disappointed at all when I finally got my hands on it. it's a classic from FOX knives.

It's a beautiful drop point knife "machete" hahahah

LOL, yes i love the design. I first saw it of course on Molletta's ciao knife? Yes I think it was this knife an original Knife Research model that apparently FOX was given the design. Anyway it's a great design, also could double a a big skinner too, although i'm yet to use mine for hunting just yet.

Same quality of blade than Extrema Ratio but less warranty not bad, but a still a good blade
@BushCampingTools5 жыл бұрын
Hi, yes and too right. i was after this model for a long time. Apparently a design by Moletta for FKMD/Fox.

Say Heah Francis, Here in the States, I run with a pack of Dingos, We go out on weekends and test our gear. I can't wait to put my Fox Combat Jungle Knife through its paces. By the way I'm getting some Danglers. I seen a video where a guy did a video on the Fox Parang Bushcraft Jungle Knife plus a few others. He also complained about not liking to have a knife Jab his ribs. F. Y. I. BladeHQ sells them.,,.p
@BushCampingTools7 жыл бұрын
Yeah having that dangler option can be a bonus to help fit the carry for a broader range of peoples waists and heights.

I wanted this knife for a long time...finally bought it but after a while sold it. Its a very handsome knife but if i were lost in the woods and could have only one knife with me...this would NOT be it. Its too light to be a chopper...it lacks the weight to dig in. The tip design is also too curved to serve any type of thrust/spear purpose. It feels too brittle to baton with also. Its a looker, but i was just amazed at how light it was
@BushCampingTools9 жыл бұрын
+Sonny na Hi each to their own. I don't believe I'd be screwed if this was the only blade I had with me. A better "chopper is the M7 but you can't have a lightweight "chopper" by definition. Thanks for watching and supplying your view and appraisal of this knife!
@sonnyna38019 жыл бұрын
No i certainly wouldn't say screwed....but the Tops 107E to me is the perfect do it all knife

Say Heah Francis, Infact I'm taking my Fox Combat Jungle Knife and my Fox Pro Hinter combp with me this weekend. I'm also bringing my Woodsman Pro Premium Machete and my EZ KUT WoW Folding Saw with scabbard, in the pouch on my Combat Jungle Knife, I carry a Bokor City S. A. K Pocket Knife with saw and scissors and pliers, plus other tool's. For a military looking set, I fond the set to work outstanding in the Bush, in Northeastern United States. Dilly Dilly.,,.p

Say Heah Joe, Man do I have to Thanx You again and again. I'm getting ready to go harvest some fatwood. I knoe I'm taking an over kill with my blades just to harvest fatwood, But I want to use both my Fox Jungle Combat Knife and my Fox Pro Hunter, I mean their beautiful and match like soup and sandwich or peanut butter and jelly. Man, Joe whatva lovely piece of kit. I usually would take my 2Hawks Double Bit Hatchet orbmy 17" H. B. Agdor Trekker Hatchet. But I decided to take my 2Hawks Warbeast with it's three sharp edges, For it's weight, It's a mean chopping machine, Lovely. Yeah, I'll also will take my Wicked Tough Saw Combo. I know, I could just get away with half of what I'm taking, But I just want to tale all of them and olay wannabe a bush crafter going into the dangerous bush of my Fav. area. I'm just joking, Like I said, I don't need to take all of my tool's, But I want to, It's my new toy's and I want to. But seriously, The Jungle Combat and the Pro Hunter couldn't be mire perfect of a match. Simply TiT's, Beautiful, Aces is a simple way of explaining them, Thanx You, Joe, I mean it, I'm really liking the set.,,.
