I so agree on the friendship topic. I was friends ( before I knew the true definition of what friend meant), with someone for over two and a half decades. This person was the truest form of a narcissist that I had ever seen in my life. She was self supporting, intelligent, but draining all at the same time. While I truly loved her, I believe she only hung onto to me because she really didn’t know how to forge, and sustain relationships with other women. It was “ ALWAYS” her way or the highway. I had to take full responsibility for the pain I received from that relationship! I realized I was always her venting sound board but didn’t feel that reciprocated. Therefore, I sent a dignified, text letting her know that I still loved her but I needed to emotionally take care of myself, and that I felt as though we needed to change the nature of our relationship and each go our separate ways. While it initially hurt, I realize we “ teach” others how to treat us, and I had not been kind to myself over the years by staying in the relationship. I don’t think any less of her; I just “think more of myself;” enough to mentally, emotionally, and physically allow myself to heal. This ( to me) is the beginning of self awareness, and being able to inventory the needs of one’s self.
