You must not have a Ford, otherwise you could have saved hundreds by now, using a much higher quality Motorcraft oil filter for 3.50 a pop. Fram is garbage. Even a budget filter from walmart beats it, hands down. Keep in mind this video compares the highest synthetic Fram to a cheap supertech and microgaurd. The Fram orange filter is a peice of garbage. They are so weak that you can absolutely crush them with an oil filter wrench. Engine protection is not something to cheap out on. Good luck with your truck. It's never to late to invest in a higher quality filter. Do some research before your luck runs out.

@@williamschuman4951 They make tools specifically for cutting open filters. They're $50-80. Anybody who does this regularly has one, myself included. It makes a clean cut without scattering sparks and debris into the filter. It's necessary for cutting open a used filter, and a used filter tells you much more than a new one. I don't care much for what it looks like out of the box. What matters is after it's been used and analyzing the oil for particle counts to determine filtration efficiency, flow testing the filter to see how clogged it may be, and inspecting to ensure the seams and media held together through it's use. Purolator filters, for example, look great when new, but I've seen a lot of them with tears in the media after use. I've cut open a lot of used Fram Ultra filters (~30) and haven't found a failure yet. One was run for 30k miles (3 OCIs) with very low particle counts in the oil (filtered well) and it still flowed 3 gpm @ 1.7 psid (new is 3 gpm @ 1.5 psid) so it still had life left.

In fact, my 1995 Honda was at 310,000 miles when I sold it (I bought it at 64,000 miles). In the early years, I'd change oil every 6000 miles. Now, I change at 8000. Used Fram filters for many years with no issues. I’d be more worried about letting a shop do my oil change than doing it myself with a fram filter. Shops are known for using recycled oils........that’s waaaay more concerning than the quality of filter your using. My father was an ase master mechanic of over 43 years. He maintained Colorado’s energy companies fleet vehicles from 1972-2015.... we always used fram filters. They may be a bit cheaper made, but it’s not nearly as significant as the quality of oil going in the motor and the frequency of the changes.

As someone who has recently started changing their own oil and exploring this topic (including what filters to use), I have yet to see someone out of the many videos on KZbin provide evidence and sources of this actually happening. I put on a Fram Ultra and it seems to be working very well. Also, wouldn't the total square inches matter more than only the length itself? Doesn't Fram's 1.25 inches wide and 42 inches long (being 52.5 square inches of synthetic, wire backed media) compare far more favorably to Super Tech's 1 inch wide by 52 inches long (being only 52 square inches of their standard media)? They appear to have relatively similar areas (in square inches), but yet again Fram ultra is using their unique synthetic media with the wire backing. It would also seem like the quality and design of the media also plays into this with some being superior for different applications. As far as it seems, most of these filters out there appear to work and would pass rigorous testing (even the orange can). The extra and tough guards also appeared wider than others with metal end caps. With that, wouldn't it seem like it would have same or more area (in square inches) compared to those with metal end caps? I see a lot of people bashing Fram without seeming to say how they actually fail when used properly within a reasonable mileage between changes. When I changed my oil, the place I went to used some kind of orange can (model number CORR3614 or so) and I didn't notice any problems.

All that adhesive in the center tube is a real problem, but you should be able to see that before you mount it. Based on you description here, and hating Fram, Fram isn't necessarily trash, in fact, I think they're one of the better filters on the market, that glue that yours seeing, yes it's troubling to see such a mess, bit if you cut open an amsoil or Royal purple filter (both champion filters) you'll find a lot of overspray as well. This isn't based on facts, this is an observation, and still not an apples to apples comparison, take a wix XP puro BOSS, and Royal Purple, with that Fram Ultra, throw in your lawsuit references and then I'll believe you, Fram has kept my engines going strong for well over a million miles, never had a lubrication failure. The lawsuits we're with the Orange can, and even then, failures are due usually to neglect. The Ultra is one of the most STOUT filters on the market at an incredible price point per comparison. There's absolutely no credible evidence of potential engine damage here. As for the rust, per another video your Wix XP in a previous video had rust and even you said that was your preferred filter. Rust prevention is done via Engine oil. I'm sorry but this kind of stuff drives me BONKERS.

Your correct i called it the filter i use had rust but apples to apples? I do different comparisons best, worst so on, the super tech has faired well for the overall but the center is plastic which its probably fine but still. Yes other filters have quality control issues. I also explain. But the main points i don't defend wix if there is a problem i say it i also explain in videos. The best manufacturer's in the world can have something slip past the qa quality assurance. So over time the more filters opened of the same brand with the least quality issues would probably be the best choice. Now which filter fits the bill well im not sure yet maybe you know or do you have tunnel vision with fram. I did with wix but the rust and length of filter media plus more only hurt wix stock for me.

Some fram filters are made overseas, the one you are testing looks like it was put together in Pakistan by some kid smearing some typ of glue or reson on the base plates to hole the medium. The quality filters are comming out of China where they have brand new machery.

If you cut oil filters open with a side grinder, you've already lost all credibility. It makes it obvious that you don't cut open filters regularly, especially not used filters. You're just exploiting people's biases against Fram for views and likes. I've cut open 50+ Fram Ultra filters AFTER use, with particle count analysis in UOAs, with excellent PC results and not a single failure. None of them have looked like that.

Right, the angle grinder may well have light the oil inside that caused the burn on filter paper.

I’m telling you Nate, text the Puralator boss & the Bosch. IMO they’re the best 2 out there. The boss just for its ironoroof construction & the Bosch for its value.

I'd rethink Purolator. They've been plagued with tearing issues in recent years. Of the last 10 used Purolators I've cut open, 3 of them had tears in the media. The Purolator Boss only flowed 1.7 psid @ 3 gpm in my own testing which is worse than the Wix XP at 1.4 psid @ 3 gpm and Fram Ultra at 1.5 psid @ 3 gpm. ISO 4548-12 testing on the Boss filter only has it at 95% efficient @ 40 microns which about the same as the Wix XP and worse than K&N.

@@dontderockmeriz4546 Bosch filters are decent for a daily commuter. They're made by Champion pretty much identical to Mobil 1 EP filters but with slightly worse efficiency. For the price though, it's a good buy.

@@dontderockmeriz4546 I don't really favor one brand. It just depends on the application. I use Fram Ultra filters on my daily driver, tow rig, and two of my bracket engines with great results. However, not every application benefits from the extra filtration efficiency. The Late Model engines use Wix racing for better flow. Those engines get refreshed every 2-3 years so low particle counts for 300k+ miles use isn't a concern.

Factory filters are made by the same companies that make the oil filters you find on shelves of auto supply stores. ln many cases, they are exact copies of "off the shelf" oil filters and the car companies just have their own label and logo added.
