In this episode of our Couple Builds Dream Home series we are Framing the first wall of our apartment of garage addition to our off-grid cabin. The wall was extremely heavy but we managed to lift it with a little help from the tractor. Lifting walls with a tractor can be a bit nerve-racking but when you need muscle they sure come in handy.

Build the wall frames, put 1 sheet on each corner to make it square, put a long 2x4 on tractor bucket pointing forward, tie down to bucket, put strap on frame where window goes, attach to tractor, Lift in place, gives you more reach, then fix rest of boards. Dont forget to put plumbing in,Put up 3 walls then Concrete floor, good surface to work from, and if you wait untill all walls up will have trouble laying concrete!!.

I like this building system. In Italy we have few woods and wood costs a lot. And in the summer we have a big fire risk because there are vacant lots with dry bushes. We build with cut stones, bricks of dimensions and substance of many kinds. Concrete pillars and beams with abundant iron for earthquake breakage prevention. Don't you have large concrete bricks in the USA with padding made from pieces of wood? With bricks it is very easy to build walls.

If you get one or two four by four by twelve feet put a eye bolt at the end. Put the poles under the bucket then take a chain over the bucket loop them on both sides of the bucket then use a chain binder to make tight. Use a strap or a chain if you want. I have used this method before. If you want you can also use steel pipe with at least quarter inch wall. This might help keep up the great work.

Marty, I would have thought that you would have put some stone on the outside around the walls for drainage. I wonder if you will put some drain lines in the garage. Sewer lines to let the water out when you park wet cars in the garage. Sometime you can put some epoxy into the holes to help hold those bolts. I noticed you could have added a place for a water line into the garage. The wife and son should have safety glasses and hearing protection on. Marty use some straps on the bucket when lifting those walls.

Not really surprised you all couldn't lift the wall. I mean maybe if you framed with 2 x 4's it may have been possible. But 2 x 6" and OSB sheeting and it takes a lot of effort. And the key is to NOT over push everyone's abilities and get hurt and then everything has to come to a halt. Easy does it and you can continue on. Over do it and it could come to a total stop until you all heal up... Safety first!

I enjoy watching your videos and seeing what your family is up to. Some constructive criticism though, It is tempting to use a music bed too much of the time. This requires your viewers to not only like your content, but also not be aggravated by the choice of music. Just the background noises or even silence is often preferable to the over use of a music bed. I mean, sometimes you are even using it (ducked a bit) while you are speaking. Please think about this in the spirit the comment is intended.
