She’s a national treasure. I first watched her in 1979 and was so impressed that I modeled my life after her: always be critical and don’t fall for everything you read or hear, you’re responsible to develop and use your own judgement, and trust your inner contrarian voice.
@JohnJohnson-mo4bn

Being a Contrarian is hackneyed & dull. In other words, to disagree (to be contrary) merely for the sake of disagreeing is childish & disingenuous. She's Unoriginal..Hating living anywhere but New York City is Woody Allen's schtick. On occasion she can be clever, but even at her wittiest she's no Woody Allen or Dorothy Parker, let alone Oscar Wilde & Mark Twain. If this is your notion of what a National Treasure's personality is, I feel for you. Honestly, for over 40 Years, you have chosen to model your entire life on One human, & this is that human? What a pathetic cliched existence you must live, a truly pitiful Non-Identity

@@vapidcity true, being a lefty nowadays means going with the program and fitting in. This kind of leftism, before it became mainstream, was more of a fringe phenomenon around 1978 when she became known, and then she seemed a contrarian. The times caught up with her, but at least she kept her wit and sarcasm.

When I lived in Manhattan from 1989-2006, Fran used to frequent a restaurant/cafe I worked at. No, I’m not going to say the name because she likely still goes there. But there is something comforting about her for sure. I was her waiter countless times (many famous people went there) and she was always very warm and friendly. She wasn’t loud or rude like a lot of hardcore New Yorkers. The other one who was always a joy was Joan Rivers. Both her and Fran would ask you questions about yourself, ask you how you were doing, not many people do that. I once casually mentioned that it was my birthday one day, and Joan reached into her purse and handed me an unopened Godiva chocolate bar and insisted I take it.

Exactly. The virus spreads through fine aerosol mist droplets, so the barriers act as a break. Also, I'm sick of Bill bitching about wearing a mask to his seat in a restaurant. True obviously the virus could spread while eating but it's about reduction. The more the mask is on, the less chance of spreading. Servers and staff have to mask up the whole shift. Wear your damn mask to the table, quit bitching and leave a ginormous tip for them.

Plastic dividers do not keep air separated, they create more distance for a virus to travel from one host to another. Most viruses have a very short life-span outside of the host, so plastic dividers will do a decent job of preventing a virus from spreading. I agree with you. Why all this nostalgia for rushing back to the “old ways”? Using the traditional office workplace as an example: People who were complaining about working in cubicle culture, lack of work/life balance, lack of any sense of control over their workspaces, etc. in January 2020 were suddenly struck with amnesia & couldn’t wait to get back into the office by April 2020. And not just the people with tiny apartments, or domestic violence concerns, or lack of technological resources, or child care issues, or positions that were difficult to do from home. No, they were just SO used to doing things the way they’d always been done that they started going bonkers after a couple of weeks without the confines of traditional working conditions. Personally, I’m NEVER going back to the old ways. The challenges of 2020/2022 have had a least a couple of benefits: changing the “nobody can work from home in this job” idea has been one of those benefits. I’d rather walk my dog at 10:30 a.m. than be in yet another in-person meeting that wastes an hour of the workday that could’ve been handled with an email.

Bill the difference between people flying on planes during the pandemic and you having a comedy show is that a lot of people traveling by plane is necessary whether for work or to get back home. agreed, change what you can, accept what you can't. Concerts can be shut down with relatively little societal disruption, air travel can't. Also, their comments about dividers and restaurants is annoying, it's physically impossible to put food in your mouth with a mask on. Some people don't seem to understand the virus isn't just free floating in the air, it's carried on respiratory droplets which are combatted by social distance, masks, dividers, etc

I think its more based on the scientific notion that covid is usually spread by people talking face to face for an extended period of time through spit particles. So if you’re sitting down just talking with the person you went to dinner with you two are already exposed to eachother, but if you get up and walk around the restaurant or bar you increase the likelihood that you expose other people. I understand it seems silly but it’s a compromise between completely shutting down restaurants or having our hospitals overflowing with covid patients. The way we dealt with covid in America was really stupid because we did half ass measures for a year instead of strict lockdowns for a shorter period of time.

@ 2:55 "There seems to be a lack of understanding of what air is..... " I hate to be the one to tell you, the misunderstanding is by you. Those plastic dividers actually work very well in preventing the spread of the virus. In almost the same way face masks do. Unfortunately not as effective as facemasks.
@RTWPimpmachine
@RTWPimpmachine 3 жыл бұрын
The lack of understanding is on your part. Face-masks have virtually no real-world empirical validity in stopping the virus spread. That should be fucking obvious considering some 80% of Americans wear face-masks and that hasn't had any meaningful impact on the spread of the virus. Studies demonstrating face-mask effectiveness in purely theoretical (i.e. particle dispersal) settings use conditions like: Tapping the masks onto the face, using surgical and n95 masks etc... none of which are being done in the real world. For the record, I wear a mask. But never do I think it "protects" me from infection.
@jeffs6090
@jeffs6090 3 жыл бұрын
@@RTWPimpmachine - So, first off, masks are giving the other people the protection from you versus them protecting you from others. In that regard, they are proven highly effective, obviously if worn properly. The virus is mainly within the droplets ejected while you speak or sneeze, etc, and the mask will greatly decrease the amount spewn from your mouth and the distance it spews. So, if you were to have the virus without being symptomatic and therefore you don't know you have it (which is really the very common situation we've been in with this virus), you will greatly decrease the spread by wearing a mask. Is it 100%? Of course not, but not a whole lot of things are and we still do them in order to help. So therefore, secondly, this is indeed the same premise of the plastic dividers. Since the virus is more in the spittle than expiratory breath, the divider will keep that from getting onto a person next to you, on the other side of the divider. Again, 100%? Probably not, but I would very much prefer to have something helping to a good degree versus nothing at all and openly being exposed to another person's possible infection. Before when people had a cold or the flu, you would commonly say "get away from me, cover your mouth!", right? That is the exact same thing as socially distance and wear your mask. And before anyone wants to spout off about me not knowing what I'm talking about, I work in a hospital and have been taking care of Covid patients everyday for the past year. If you have seen the simple diagram listing the percentages of transmission showing people with or without masks and close or farther proximity, they are very accurate. If people had heeded that science from the very beginning, we may be in a better place now than we are.
@dozog
@dozog 3 жыл бұрын
@@jeffs6090 Thank you Jeff. I would only like to add to that that Dave is completely wrong that. " ... some 80% of Americans wear facemasks and that that hasn't had any meaningful impact...." Maybe (just maybe) 80% are wearing them *now* , but in 2020 wearing facemask was a political issue, you were deemed unpatriotic if you were wearing one. The facemask issue is one of the factors in the atypical American covid death rate.

@@RTWPimpmachine You are wrong about "studies demonstrate face-mask effectiveness is purely theoretical" Please link to that study. I have read many of the studies and the majority of people saying "face masks are not effective" have not read the studies, or misrepresent what it actually says.
@RTWPimpmachine
@RTWPimpmachine 3 жыл бұрын
@@dozog Sigh. Its like debating children. "The facemask issue is one of the factors in the atypical American covid death rate." No its not. The US's death rate isn't really atypical of a Western nation. On a per capita basis it isn't much different than the rest of Europe. This is despite the fact that Americans, on average, are fat as fuck, with obesity increasing the probability of death almost 9x. "Maybe (just maybe) 80% are wearing them now , but in 2020 wearing facemask was a political issue, you were deemed unpatriotic if you were wearing one." Nope. Stop talking out of your ass. This is from late June 2020. news.gallup.com/poll/315590/americans-face-mask-usage-varies-greatly-demographics.aspx "I have read many of the studies and the majority of people saying "face masks are not effective" have not read the studies, " www.acpjournals.org/doi/10.7326/M20-6817 The famous "Danish Study". Which found NO STATISTICAL DIFFERENCE in infection rates between mask users and non-mask users. The study designers then shamelessly said "Well, no statistical significance but it was going in that direction". Which is something that would never even be allowed to be published. Never mind the fact that these idiots didn't even eliminate confounding variables, like the fact that someone wearing a face-mask might simply socially distance more. Quote: "The between-group difference was −0.3 percentage point (95% CI, −1.2 to 0.4 percentage point; P = 0.38) (odds ratio, 0.82 [CI, 0.54 to 1.23]; P = 0.33). Multiple imputation accounting for loss to follow-up yielded similar results. Although the difference observed was not statistically significant, the 95% CIs are compatible with a 46% reduction to a 23% increase in infection." That is the only RCT study on face-masks. The other 'studies' are functionally worthless as far as making conclusions on a population level because these are aerosol studies that tape a surgical mask to someone's face and then say "oh look, the droplets were contained", which isn't occurring in the real world. In case you are too stupid to understand what all of this means: Yes, PERFECT use of face masks LIKELY helps prevent covid-19 transmission. But that isn't going on ANYWHERE on the planet. Condoms also "work" to control STD's, but a "condom mandate" in your local high school isn't going to prevent STD transmissions.
