In the Middle Ages, Catharism - a Christian sect accused of heresy - thrived in the heart of the French Pyrenees. Its indelible imprint can still be seen today: perched on a rock some 1,200 metres high sits Montségur castle, where the Cathars lived until they were massacred on the orders of the Pope. A few kilometres away, in the village of Talairan, locals are battling to save the area’s Cathar heritage, including the little chapel of Notre Dame de L’Aire. FRANCE 24 takes you to discover it.

i was cathar in my past life and have a really strong connection with it. they where the ascention keepers and the original teachers of the word of jesus. the be called "'good man"' and would always give food to the poor. the roman church was there mortal enemy! sad to say the killed the cathars... but i am very happy the belief lives trough people like me and the wonderful people of this video!

Catalans are the true cathars, the french living in occitanie now are mostly of northern frankish regions who claimed the cathars land during the crusade. Making them flee south and create catalonia (cathalunia in contemporary latin).
