In Israel, the Haredim community (or "Those in awe of God") lives separately from the rest of Israeli society. Dressed all in black, these ultra-Orthodox practise a strict form of Judaism, cut off from modern society. In cities like Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, they have their own neighbourhoods, shops and schools and do not hesitate to challenge the authorities. Our correspondents in Israel went to meet members of this inward-looking community that’s often tyrannical towards its own.

While travelling in the UK I met a guy in the hostel who was from an Orthodox family in Jerusalem, Every time we spoke he would get surprised about pretty simple things and then have to look it up on the internet. He'd been so isolated his whole life it was as if he was from 100 years ago, and came to visit us in a time machine.

The disdain and disgust these people show to those outside of their community is frightening. If you live in New York State you can experience it for yourself if you turn down the wrong street in Queens, or get lost traveling to up-state NY, or if you walk into the wrong business in Manhattan's diamond district. I have many Jewish friends, but none are of the Hasidic sect. My Jewish friends don't have friends from the ulta orthodox community. Regardless of who you are, how you look, and what teachings make up the core of your faith; if you aren't one of them, to them, you are just an animal.

I’m a Breslev Chassid, the same type of jew of that happy musician. We believe in making people happy trough music and mainly by praying to G-d with your own personal words. The ultra-orthodox, however, are not all like that. They decided to show Mea Shearim, but it’s a neighborhood seen as radical even by other religious jews. I’m sad that women felt guilt for her sins to the point of leaving faith. I feel happy for the accomplishments, like charity and kindness, instead of feeling guilty for human mistakes like greed and gluttony. Judaism teaches there is sin, of course, but also teaches that G-d forgives immediately when you repent and apologize, and not a second later.
