What are some franchises that got a second chance that you feel did it right? Or screwed it up?
@ninjapirate47 Жыл бұрын
The most obvious would certainly be metal gear solid. Mortal Kombat also got a helluva revival. Harder to think of the ones that didn't do so well as they fall into the memory gap of oblivion. Think that's what made this episode so interesting, seeing those that tried and failed. Wish they'd do another 2d Splatterhouse.

Alright, turbonerd time! You made mention of the fact that OG doom was originally meant to be played with just a keyboard at 4:40 and while it does work excellently with just a keyboard, this statement is an old myth. There are several things to support this: 1: The developers all played with mouse input during development and the demos playing in the menu are all recorded using mouse input. 2: Back in the DOS days, the menu asked you for an input preference and the manual actually encouraged you to switch to mouselook when you felt comfortable enough with the game. 3: John Romero himself went on record saying that Doom and Wolfenstein 3d (surprisingly enough) was made with mouse input in mind from the ground up. I think this is one of those old wives tales its time we put to rest. Unless, you just said that in order to bait old codgers like me into commenting in which case... You got me, check mate. Great video as usual Joe!

Amen, especially if they deliberately made the art direction 90's retro in terms of style, to tickle the nostalgia nerve. The Shining series like a geological stratum shows the current anime trends. Shining Force was almost made into a Gacha game, but Vespa, the Korean company that acquired the licence got into trouble and stopped development. It was all I ever wanted from a new Shining game, except for the 'only for smartphones' bit.

Don't wanna be "that" guy, but the "main Phantasy Star" we have by now is the Online series. By the end of 2023, it's gonna be 30 years since the classic Phantasy Star series got its last game, so it's kinda hard to call it "main series" nowadays. Like it ot not, the Online series got popular as the original never did. I don't have any hopes of it being resurrected. I'd love to be wrong, though!

@SEGARetroBR Жыл бұрын
@@damagedgears Yeah, the story was already concluded. Phantasy Star IV was meant to finish the classic series and I doubt SEGA thinks that remakes of those games would be profitable, which makes the classic series even less likely to come back. Inti Creates is a bit of an interesting company, starting from a group who left Capcom, but I guess it was on good enough grounds for them to continue to make the MegaMan Zero games before striking their own way with Azure Striker Gunvolt series, the Blaster Master games, and the retro games in the Bloodstained franchise... along with the *ahem* slightly pervy on-rails shooter "Gal Gun" games

The chainsaw in Doom 2016 also gave ammunition when used against enemies, but to be honest I've never actually played the game, that's just what I've heard from old reviews. I think they went back to the NES style on Mega Man 9 because sales went down with each game in the series after that, and they were trying to get back to basics. Interviewers asked the devs why they didn't make it into a NES game, and they said that at the time it was too big of a game to fit the NES limitations, and too much of an undertaking. Maybe they could do it now? The graphics filter has been removed on the Mega Man Legacy Collection 2.

Capcom kind of made a classic Mega Man for modern systems before Mega Man 11. Everyone always forgets about Mega Man Powered Up for the PSP, which was an enhanced remake of Mega Man 1. Doom was not originally meant to be played only with a keyboard, that is not true at all. Check out the manual for the game, page 9 at the bottom it clearly says: TIP: When you're comfortable playing the game, try using the keyboard and the mouse simultaneously. The mouse provides fine control for aiming your weapon (allowing you to smoothly rotate right or left) while the keyboard permits you to activate the many useful functions of the game. The manual also mentions that it supports joysticks on page 6. While allot of players did play it using just the keyboard it was clearly made to have options.

On the DC it almost never made the 60fps, but on a reasonably powerful PC it suddenly runs at mostly 60fps. So that's currently the best version to play due to the extra tracks compared to the arcade version. The old school PC platformer "Commander Keen" almost had a mobile revival, but the reception to the trailer was so poor that it (thankfully) got cancelled. I've been hearing talk that Ubisoft has been working on a remake to "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time" plus, apparently, a 2.5D game in the series subtitled "The Lost Crown". PoP hasn't had an original entry since 2010, and the last time any entry came out was a mobile remake of "The Shadow and the Flame" in 2013.

Joe's proclamation of a game being awesome never sounded as jubilant as his reaction of the revived Doom eternal. Banger episode gamesack.

Love this episode. And honestly Joe I think it would be awesome of you reviewed some modern games. Some indie as well as triple a . It would be refreshing to hear your perspective on them

I always find it funny when someone who plays video games as much as Joe says they can't beat Mega Man. Also, I'm pretty sure Galaxy Man is the consensus best master to start with in MM9.

23:03 how come your sega rally arcade 1995 is so smooth HD and widescreen? may i know from where did the capture come from?

As a Mega Man fan, I appreciate that you at least gave the series a shot. For the lack of a better word. Although if you really wanted to there are other ways to get that "authentic" NES experience with MM9. You can opt for the Wii version and use a NES Classic controller on it or play the Legacy Collection using the NSO NES controller on the Switch. Still, even if it's not your cup of tea, I'm glad you see why Mega Man is mega awesome!! 😎

Inti Creates was an outsource company for Mighty 9, if I’m mistaken, and the dev was Comcept.

Dragon Quest was a great series as well as Saga. Wonder Swan Color English Translation first then DS Translations for Saga. The Gameboy knew them as Final Fantasy. Emulation is great. I have a DS Flashcart to use as well.

4:40 That is blatantly incorrect. Doom was designed with mouse support in mind, it's just that most people at the time didn't have a mouse.

Happy Sunday! What a cool idea for an episode. I loved that last splatter house game when it came out!

Fun review. But I think Sega Rally Revo was actually waaay better than Sega Rally 3/Sega Rally Arcade Online. The car needs to look like it's moving.

13:13 to turn off the border on mm10 (at least on PS3) you gotta go to your console system settings and change its screen resolution to 480p 4:3 it's dumb, I know, but at least it turns the border off on that system. On the mm legacy collection version of mm10 there's a native option to turn off the border (thank God)
