Bobby Lashley just told Ariel Helwani that he didn't sign with the UFC because he would be restricted from doing any work with the WWE. Bobby said Scott Coker did not impose any restrictions on him and that was why Bobby fought for Strikeforce.

His not even in the top 10 highest selling ppvs and his complaining about his pay....if you don't like how much you are being paid....don't work their simple ! I'd bet money it's all a work though...too make him more popular....but... I'm happy for Dana too prove me wrong and blacklist him from the sport in America...like my boy Vince would .... I think a settlement is probably the best outcome for this case. The UFC will still exist and thrive, but will have to clean up it's act in terms of it's treatment of fighters. Exactly. It took numerous class action suits to force the mcmans to admit they are workers, the end. AEW is still the new WCW and TNA mixed with Bush league type level of roughness in production. Part of their bigschitick and incorperation into a charter says (essentially) as far as the AEW is concerned these are workers they get paid on the regular and get 2 days off on the regular. Wait ECW did that as well...er well eventually. Part of why it folded: turns out actually paying your staff, even when it's bad ass stutment doing cosplay is fucking expensive.

If you bring value and actually make the ufc money then they pay very good. People that are only there to fill the card and bring no money to the ufc are still making at least 50,000 a year and that’s not including all of their own sponsors that the ufc gave them the platform to even get those sponsors. I do think the ufc should pay set amounts and fighters not have to worry about winning to get the whole amount. I just truly believe people are blowing it out of proportion. It's not the payout that really matters the most, its the fact that they make fighters independent contractors so that they don't have to bother about their health/insurances and benefits. Thats the messed up part. In every other organization that I have received offers from during 2009-2015, all of them take care of those issues, its only the ufc.

The Feds state there are certain rights all 1099 contractors have, like the UFC claims their athletes are. Technically the client is the UFC and the fighters are contracted. There are rights like the right when to work, the right to a fee, and most importantly the right to accept contract work in addition. The UFC can’t, by the letter of the law, tell fighters they can’t sign other contracts. But at the same time the UFC can terminate that contract whenever they please and without any reason. This how corporations like the UFC manipulate contractors. It’s a classic way companies use to treat people like employees, without any rights of an employee. The UFC are one of many exploring people like this.

This will settle or won't go to a verdict in favor of the fighters, just based on my knowledge of antitrust and having a distant understanding of the facts. My reasoning is that this isn't a Section 1 violation (which is left for horizontal conspiracies, for example if Target and CVS decided to fix the price of their products). Section 1 is the most impactful antitrust suit you can bring. This, however, only implicates the UFC, making it a Section 2 monopoly violation. Section 2 violations often require a showing of market power, and then they are judged under the "Rule of Reason" which almost always favors defendants (the UFC is the defendant in this case). Antitrust suits that go under the Rule of Reason are so difficult to win it's almost futile to even bother. Best bet is a settlement, but settlements don't affect the law, they just grant money to the plaintiffs. Just my two cents.

great break down. The fighters really need to just unionize. Normally I'm not a fan of unions but in this case it's warranted. As another commenter pointed out, the UFC does not pay these fighters for training nor do they provide health insurance if they get hurt while training. They only get paid when they show up for a fight and they only get health coverage if they are hurt during that fight. This forces a lot of guys to hide an injury until they step into the ring, just so they don't have to pay for surgery out of pocket. Then to add insult to potential injury, even though the fighters are not getting paid for their time in training, they are still prohibited from fighting in other events that fall outside their UFC contract. In other words, "we own your time even though we are not paying you for it". This is all grossly unfair. It's possible for a fighter to spend 6 months in training without a paycheck, and then get hurt the day before their fight and lose out on their paycheck and be responsible for their own medical bills. They take on all this risk in order to provide a product that the UFC is making millions on. This all has to stop. (Dana white is personally worth over half a billion)

The UFC treats them like independent contractors who only get paid when they fight but require them to go through months of intense training to get ready to fight. Meanwhile they prohibit them from fighting elsewhere to make money so they own their time without paying for it. In this last fight the UFC pulled in 32 million in PPV buys alone. They paid a grand total to all the fighters of 1.8 million. That is about 5% of their earnings that actually goes to the fighters. All other professional sports pays about 50% to their players. Brandon Moreno made 200k and then 600k from ppv shares, Figueredo made 150k plus 600k from ppv shares. That’s $4 million already in just four fighters. Also there isn’t even any information on how many PPV buys there was at UFC 270 yet that takes time..there was only a $5.2 million gate which is small and no official information on ppv buys so your numbers are just as wrong on your total revenue as they were on your fighter payout. Try again kid. You can’t compare “professional sports” to UFC payouts. They’ve been established for many years and have a fan base and revenue much larger than the UFC.. like the NFL for example (American football) generated $12.2 billion in revenue last year while the UFC did $400 million.

In all honesty, I feel extremely split on this issue. On one hand I want the fighters who risk their lives out there to make great money. They deserve really good pay, health care and some form of retirement after a certain amount of fights/time. On the other hands some of the things fighters complained about are general contract tactics by most sports organizations. The promoter/team always wants to sign a longer contract so they can financially plan & lock in that talent for as long as possible. Promoters/teams often bully or punish players/fighters who do not cooperate with them. In fighting that might be making them wait on fighting while in the MLB it maybe sending them to the bench or even to AAA ball. All major sports in the United states have one league that does have a full fledged monopoly on each market. Only hope for the NFL will be the Rock working with the NFL to develop the XFL into a league that is a developmental place of young talent and somewhere vets go before retiring. Ask any professional athlete and they will tell you it’s a cutthroat business. Ultimately fighters do deserve a higher percentage of the companies earnings.. something at least like 35-45% to compare to the other major sports leagues. But just like every other sport.. the more talent & star power you have the more money you earn & power you have during negotiations.

@@310smoker not my area of practice + im not based in the US, so don't know a lot about US competition law. But as it is with most things like this, it will definitely be a reach that something hugely positive comes off it, and middle ground settlements are more likely. But pressuring the organisation with threat is important in keeping it in line.

I hope this goes through. The organization we “love and trust”… and they pull this kind of shit on fighters. 😑🤦🏽‍♂️.

Ya love the ufc but on this instance I will always support the fighter and every mma fan or ufc fan should support the fighters if not you don’t deserve to watch these men go to battle.

It's such a shame that the fighters don't get together and uninionise!

Why would they? its only a few who have a problem, majority is satisfied. These few cases have been blown out of proportion and there is this hysteria around atm. UFC pays the best of all mma organizations and even the average fighter in ufc earns more than the average fighter in boxing.

There needs to be a Combat Sports Association that governs rankings, rules, and titles and is independent from the UFC. There also needs to be an MMA fighters union.

That is what the MMAFA is trying to do with ongoing lawsuit.

This video is very informative and presented unbiased view of what’s going on with the lawsuit. I hope the fighters win this lawsuit because it will change the MMA industry stopping other organizations from totally screwing over fighters. The current fighters needs to look at what happened to the previous generation of fighters because they are going to be treated the same way. Look at how many UFC Champions that are broke not because they blew their money foolishly they were not paid much money and the little they had was used for medical bills due to all of the damage their body sustained during fights in the UFC.

I'm super impressed with this video. Labor rights is a huge deal imo and the fighters, boxers, NCAA athletes all need formal representation. I really hope Congress could pick up this issue on the legislative side as well. This was absolutely fabulous coverage and a basic econ explainer too. Way to go!

Treble damages is the term you are looking for Tommy. I took antitrust law last semester, didn't get an A tho... Yes, I would be down to be a legal intern for free
