A few notes, fight fans!! Jason Cruz has a fantastic book called 'Mixed Martial Arts and the Law: Disputes, Suits and Legal Issues' if you want to explore this topic further, I would highly recommend picking it up! And in a follow up conversation with John S. Nash, he talked to me about the impact of the original Ali Act on boxing, and how it completely eliminated coercive option clauses and nearly immediately put Don King out of business. Hope you enjoyed the video!

Over the last few years I've really felt withdrawn from the sport and I really could t pin point why it was. But with the recent departure of Francis, it really put the nail in the coffin for me. This video really sums up what I've been feeling about a sport I've loved so much. The other org's are great to watch and all, but if the top one is treating its fighters this way, it's gone be really hard to stay connected with the sport in general if things don't change.

Same way I feel brother! Lately I've been thinking about turning into bellator more. I usually only watch bellator when they have those veteran superfights, or a tournament, or if some of the old UFC stars are fighting like gay garb mousasi or YOLO Romero. But lately it's been very hard to stay connected to the UFC and the past several months watching all of the politics they've tried to use to screw over some of that favorite fighters has been really disgusting if you ask me. All the way from the favoritism to giving certain fighters the corporate push and different passes on breaching the laws or rules and the way they've been doing people with the last fight on their contracts is just horrible. The fact that they have them locked in as employees but won't give them any of the employee benefitsis dang near like indentured servitude. I don't like how they tried to screw Nate on his last fight, although it also occurred to me that I wonder if they never planned on making Nate verse hams at and they only promoted it that way to cause a bunch of controversy and to get a lot of eyes on that card, but had all along planned on switching it up at the last minute. Cuz I don't think they would have been doing anything for their reputation to try to get the beloved and Nate Diaz smashed in his last fight. I wonder if people start tuning and lessor start voicing their opinions more on how they don't like the operation once it get past matchmaking, if they'll change. People really need to start taking a stand especially with the way Dana is now feeling so untouchable that even after smacking his wife he's going to come out and say well any punishment they give me wouldn't hurt me it would only hurt the organization in the fighters. To me that was beyond cocky and his God complex is gotten way out of hand. No one should feel THAT powerful!

Ankalaev vs Blajovich is a prime example of the control the promotion has on the competitive nature of the title and ranking system. Dana just didn’t like the fight so he said fuck the rankings were going to book a new fight and call that the “title fight.”
@AveSicarius
@AveSicarius Жыл бұрын
Even outside of manipulating the fight matchups directly through refusing or cancelling fights, the UFC will absolutely show blatant favouritism depending on where they smell profit, and will set fighters up for failure if Dana believes an individual will make a more marketable champion or ranked fighter. Look at the Oliveria vs Islam fight, they did literally everything they could to prep Islam for the win, promoted Charles as the underdog, booked the fight in Duba instead of Brazil, and regardless of the actual skill matchup (Charles still had glaring holes in his game that needed addressing), that almost certainly had an impact on the fight. Imagine being the champion, holding the title, and your promotion is already treating your opponent like they've won before you step foot in the ring. The fighters themselves have no say, nobody has any say, nobody but the management of the UFC. Why did they do this? Because Islam as champion gets the HUGE Khabib fanbase and increased market value in the Muslim community. Even if Islam himself has the charisma of a rock, he's got the potential to sell far more PPVs just by fighting once a year so he's the clear choice. Would it have changed the outcome? Potentially but that isn't the point. The SOP is to have the fight be fought on the champion's home turf, have the champion be marketed as such, and for the challenger to be, well, in the position Charles was. It was very strange to see it all play out, and was a demonstration of the lack of loyalty the UFC has to any fighter, even if they've made them significant bank in the past. Oliveria, Ngannou, DJ, and more have all suffered from this in different ways. If being champion doesn't help, nothing will. The UFC has full control over almost every aspect of the fights, they control the date, the location, the payout, the matchups themselves, the title qualification, and it's almost certain they have significant influence over the judging as well. It doesn't matter about ranking because even champions have been screwed over regarding matchmaking and promotion. Nothing matters but profit. It's as political and exploitative as Professional Boxing, if not worse, in many ways.

I've only recently gotten into MMA in the past 5 or 6 years because of Khabib being Russian and myself being Russian and this whole time I thought it was extremely weird how much power the promotion has over the fighters. I'm primarily a hockey and basketball fan where the players have most of the power and see at least an equal split in profits with the owners. So it always kind of struck me as weird just how this way of running a sport is accepted as "just how it is" among the MMA fans I have talked to. Its cool to see that people are coming to realize just how much of a raw deal the fighters are getting in the biggest promotion in the world, let alone how bad it probably is in smaller promotions.

I think a big part of the problem is Dana takes care of the top guys and big names which keeps them from banding together or speaking out. Just look at recently Michael Chandler praised the UFC, Sean O'malley defended them, DC has talked about how they took care of him many times, there's been lots of other ones too. Most of the time the people that speak up are ones that essentially nobody is going to miss. Plus the bigger name guys that do say something usually just do it to get offers elsewhere since ONE and PFL will generally pay well for established names.

Here’s my solution: Someone needs to create a maintain an Elo ranking system for MMA (the system that they use in chess). That way, there is a ranking system independent of the UFC. The UFC won’t be able to drop fighters from the rankings or force them into bad contracts because the fighters have the security of their ranking. It takes away a lot of leverage from the UFC.

One of my favorite philosopher. But I find it funny how the vid was using his quotes in side with the fighters, when it can very much be used in side with the UFC. No one should deny that UFC is what made MMA big(ger). MMA never was a popular sport. Yet, some people treat it like its boxing (with all its flaws, history, foundation of it is massive) or even some popular sports like football, NBA. It's not so, so of course what some of these people propose would either fail or have not enough impact. Socialism only works when everything is luxurious, which MMA still is not. But I can agree with the vid that some good still will come out of this. Not what some people want them to be, but more transparency and whatnot (it can also hinder from MMA becoming bigger, going the path of boxing even at this stage).

I am interested to see what happens to mma in the next 5 years. If you look at the comments on these power slap videos 👋 that the UFC keeps putting out, it is flooded with people asking Dana to plz stop posting these under the banner of the UFC. His response has basically been been to give everyone the finger and just completely ignore the feedback from loyal fans, sometimes even going so far as to insult the fans. I used to be neutral on Dana as a person but this last year he has left nothing but bad impressions on me.

Maybe a part two of this: How the Ali Act changed boxing. Specifically for individual fighter pay and benefits. Then compare those specific changes to the current MMA situation. Or, did it just give more leverage to the top boxers?
