Francisco Nguema was the first president of Equatorial Guinea. He left behind a scarred country and a legacy of a ruthless dictator.

Nguema was an officer in the Spanish army. After Equatorial Guinea was fully decolonized, Nguema won the presidential election. The only free election in the country to date.
Soon after his coming to power, Nguema transferred all legislative and judiciary power to himself, holding the national treasury in his office. He changed the constitution giving him absolute power and banning immigration.
Around 100,000 people fled the country, which represents 47% of the population at the time. Add to that an estimated 50-80,000 deaths caused by Nguema. All that for a country of 215,000 people. If you look at the percentages, he did more damage to Guinea than the Nazis did to Europe.
Nguema was not fond of the intellectuals, and he banned private education and killed people who wore glasses. Soon, a lot of things got banned too - libraries, newspapers, churches, Christian names and, oddly enough, wearing shoes was illegal as well.
After 11 years of ruling, a coup was organized and Francisco Nguema was tried and sentenced to death. His successor was his nephew, Teodoro Nguema, and the country didn’t change a lot for the better.

Colonies should never have happened. That is greed and bad on the colonizers. But you do see how when they left the countries reverted back to simple ways. It was meant to be.
