This is one of the reasons I think the Netflix version of Frank might be my favorite, cause it’s the best of both worlds. They make him this incredibly tragic & sympathetic figure, but go out of their way to say he is a very unhinged serial killer. He was a villain in Daredevil season 2, and in his own show, for every badass fight scene with him that makes him look awesome, there’s another scene from another person’s perspective of his kills, and it’s disturbing & uncomfortable. He genuinely loved and cared for his family, and was an overall good dad, but then they show that one scene where his son makes that comment and Frank goes berserk. It’s a perfect marriage between the two takes on the character

I absolutely loved this run! I also love Punisher as a character. He is a great example of doing an inversion of the fridging trope. While normally children and women die to give character motivation, Frank was always looking for a motivation. He just needed an excuse to inflict violence. Some kind of justifiable cause. Not to say he didn't love his family but he loves his war more. It is can be argued if this reason is too much, and maybe Frank hates himself for loving violence so much. Honestly the Max origin and this origin can still fit together when adjusted for few timeline related retcons.
@paulakroy26358 ай бұрын
Tyger really goes against this comic. He’s unhinged yes but from that comic I get the sense that he’s not looking for an excuse. Like he enjoys war and punishing the guilty but he also wants first and foremost to do the right thing. His family getting shot is just an excuse but it also very much isn’t an excuse because it shapes his world view to where criminals are viewed as the infection.
@hysterical54086 ай бұрын
I always hated the idea he was always looking for a motivation, for me that makes the impact of his family's death not feel as heavy or as impactful. Him just always being on the edge of being the Punisher just makes him a villain in my eyes, and not in anyway sympathetic.

Honestly, it would be fascinating to see Frank come back after his Weirdworld vacation and processing this new information and him being, well... mellowed out. He took his ex-wife's words to heart. That he was just using her and the kids as an excuse to do what he always wanted to. And he still does want to. But he understands it better now. And of course all the heroes quickly find out he's back, and they're quick to let him know he's skating on thin ice. But he promises he's done with his old way of life. He doesn't want to do that anymore. Instead he wants to do something WAY more fucked up. Pulling from the heavily underrated Thomas Jane Punisher movie (fight me!), Frank's new M.O. isn't to just go in and shoot everything, but to orchestrate bad people dismantling their own lives BECAUSE they are bad people. So he's just using his skills and awareness of the mindset to just feed these people all the rope they could ever want until they hang themselves.

The series makes perfect sense. According to Gerry Conway, Punisher was based on Men's adventure character Mack Bolan,Executioner. Logically, the 21st century lens would draw more from the likes of Dexter, which was about a serial killer who kills evil people for his one reasons, but admits to not being able to feel connected to people.

I mean max already did this but provided far more nuance
@louurich90874 ай бұрын
@@paulakroy2635 Sure. However, it becomes somewhat complicated in the reasoning as to why, and the importance of an American writing it. Garth Ennis grew up in Northern Ireland during "The Troubles," which likely effected his view on superheroes (people in endless war with claims to higher purpose), but also the nature of what drives a person to react in such extremes, and not be a sympathetic. Having the IRA detonating bombs in the name of a "righteous cause" would not make him very sympathetic to just a war on crime. However, and American writer would not have those experiences, and shows a similar realization, without the personal baggage.

As a punisher fan I hate this run, simply for the character changes and retcons. This isn't the punisher from the main universe, it's the punisher from Aaron's Max run. Like right off the bat he got it wrong with bringing back Maria and that being what mollifies Frank. We've seen a villain do that before, the hood brought back not just Maria and also his kids, and he burned them, saying they aren't his family. I was willing to overlook this though if the rest of the story was good but it wasn't cause he kept making these kinds of changes. Also as a punisher fan, I actually really like moments where Frank has to deal with the greater Marvel universe, he knows he's outmatched, so he purposefully goes about his methods to either avoid them or has backup plans to get out. Like after he shot at Norman but failed thanks to the sentry, he knew he only had one chance, so he purposely had the backup plan of a bomb in a hospital to get Sentry off him. Or another in the Knights run, he comes across these Trolls under Manhattan, knows he absolutely can't handle that, so he tries and gets daredevil and crew who have been hunting him to go after them, there's even a fun part of it where he runs into an ongoing Fantastic Four adventure where's he way outclassed. Matt Fractions run on punisher has even more great examples of Frank just dealing with the small side of a bunch of big hero events.
@sevensvn53918 ай бұрын
Beyond the bringing Maria back thing, what character changes and retcons are you referring to, and what issue do you have with them specifically?
@Peaceblank8 ай бұрын
@sevensvn5391 So to start off, Frank as a kid, Aaron decided to change him entirely. Granted there wasn't much we'd seen before, but what we did see was completely opposite. Aaron makes it out like Frank is this school shooter kid that just happens to have some kind of morals, or at least in so far as they justify him beating the shit out of people, with him protecting the nerd. In the main universe he's just a kid, he was forceful and physical, but a pretty normal kid. Even Garth Ennis doesn't make him a murderer as a kid. He makes him quiet, reserved, well read, with a staunch sense of right and wrong. He wasn't just waiting for the day he could kill someone, he is pushed into it as the only option because all other paths have failed. Even then in Ennis' run he doesn't kill the guy who caused his friend to commit suicide, and he certainly didn't have some elaborate plan, he was just a kid with his father's gun, we don't even know if he could have gone through with it cause her brother kills him instead. But what it really boils down to, is that with this kid version of Frank, is that while he could certainly grow up to be Aaron's version of him, he couldn't grow up to be the main universe version. Aaron's Frank isn't going to be reading political philosophy books, like how Frank has been depicted, one in particular I remember being Listen, Little Man! by Wilhelm Reich. He's not going to name a snake murgatroyd, which he picked up as part of a plan in Punisher G Force. And he'd definitely never send a bunch of vintage records to his former sidekick Henry Russo as part of an anonymous birthday present. You can see this further with him during the war in the main universe. Now its been a while so I may be getting slight details wrong, but there's a story where he is in a group that is purposefully led to death so that the commanding officer can use their bodies to smuggle drugs back to the US. He manages to survive but due to rank and corruption, the officer gets away with it. Frank has to stop him himself. We can see this again in Punisher Year One, where Frank goes through not only the normal channels but also through the press, trying to get justice for his family, but when both of those fail, that's when he realizes that the only way for anything to happen is if he does it himself. He is doing these things out of a sense of right and wrong first and if he gets any enjoyment out of it, that's secondary. Meanwhile Aaron changes it so that the enjoyment is first and justice is just the excuse Frank tells himself. It's these very rigid morals that make Frank what he is, not just a love for killing. The loss of his family and that grief pushes him to seek justice for their murder, and its then being pushed into other means to achieve justice that molds him into the punisher. Its because of his love for them that pushes him so far in seeking justice. Meanwhile Aaron makes them some kind of obstacle to him becoming his true form of the punisher. He literally did it back in his Max run, pulling the exact stupid move of, oooo the big secret is he wanted a divorce all along ooooo and he uses their death as an excuse to go on a killing spree. No, that's not Frank's character. Frank does it because he's sees it as the only true effective way for these kinds of criminals to be stopped, is that correct or logical no, but it doesn't have to be, it's what he believes, and character motivations don't have to be logical. Hey if you read all that I appreciate it, I know it's alot.

See I have mixed feelings on this. I think this works better in a different reality or out of canon material, because I like the stories where Frank is written as a sympathetic character. But that said he hasn’t been written that way in a long time. Every writer just wants to write him as more and more and more of a psychopath who never really did this for his family. For that version of Frank this is great. To me personally though Cosmic Ghost Rider is just the perfect evolution of Frank Castle, and this Frank and that one don’t feel like the same person to me which turns me off a bit.

@Jake_E574 ай бұрын
People don't like this run because Jason Aaron ignores who Frank Castle is and you guys seem to not understand either. It's never been he's cool to watch and he's psycho, that's a complete misunderstanding. A crazy Frank Castle that murders people as a kid is a psycho is a problem. Punisher is an anti-hero, not a villain. He's a bad guy and he's always known it. It's been a long established that 616 Frank wasn't always a crazy psychopath, it's been a downward slide. It's easy to ignore that slide and try to portray Frank Castle as a run of the mill crazy person and make him a way less interesting character, but in order to do that you have to completely misunderstand both the character and his appeal from the beginning. People didn't love the Punisher and he didn't warrant so many series over the years because he was a crazy slasher character. He faced an intense personal trauma that people can identify with after having personally witnessed the absolute worst in humanity and it's hardened him and set him on the path he takes, he's not a crazy psychopath from berth just looking for and excuse to murder.

I came back to say this episode was great ant that it's really sad to hear that this episode was "controversial," but it is pretty funny that they actually confirm in real time the commentary of them being professionally outrage xd. Love you guys and keep on the great work ❤

There's also the completely forgotten John Ostrander run where Frank joins a low level mob family, kind of sort of begins to reevaluate his views. Then after eleven issues there's a random Onslaught tie in and it turns into a glorified X-Men spinoff for five issues. 🤣

Surprised in all of Franks history, Mistress Death has never been brought up, the litteral representation of death. Ares may claim hes Franks god, but I say otherwise.

Haven’t watched the video yet but I really loved this run of the punisher. I was surprised with how people on the internet were treating this run. Sometimes I think people forget that frank a monster he doesn’t get a happy ending.

The Punisher is kind of like the gang from "Always Sunny". You don't root for them, but you enjoy the "hijinks" they get up to.

Hey comic pop possible to see future video that tackle first appearance of Mr. Sinister???

It seems like they just wanted to destroy the character, because some people they disliked embraced him.

But if other people enjoyed it, I’m happy for them.

A thing with Frank is that even Garent Ennis run plays into question in how sociopathic he is and if he was always destined being murder machine.
@CatotheE8 ай бұрын
@@mikhaelgribkov4117 Some people have, but he was originally played much more sympathetically. Also, Jason Aaron admitted that they were doing this because of his fan base.
