An iconic performance in modern horse racing. Frankel makes it 13 wins from 13 starts on his first start stepped up to 10 furlongs, with a performance that those present on the Knavesmire will still talk about for years to come. Trainer Sir Henry Cecil, in his final months of a battle against cancer, said the win had made him feel "20 years better".

We are unlikely to see another like Frankel, he is a freak of nature and a TRUE legend. In the Juddmonte he made very good horses look like class 6 no-hopers. He was trotting at the 3F marker and just cruised past them like he was in a training gallop. The reason why this horse is a legend is because of his consistency and truly staggering method oh his victories. No one has ever seen a horse do what he did in the 2000 Guineas. Genius horse, genius trainer...breathtaking!!!

Dancing Braves performance in the Arc was probably the most breath taking middle distance performance in the history of turf racing. The cameras were focused on Bering and a flash of equine brilliance just came into view and shot past. But being a believer he was the best horse over the last thirty odd years i cannot envisage a greater example of perfection than that shown by Frankel not once but twice. First in the Guiness and then in the Queen Anne. Jaw dropping. We have been blessed .

Had the pleasure of meeting Frankel when he was still racing. He's extraordinary. He's a horse with an amazing personality. He is very aware of who he is and what he does. I can only compare him to Ali. A mix of confidence with ability and a certain amount of justified arrogance, yet surprisingly friendly. You don't normally get too close to these stallions, but he had a very nice nature about him. His body language (which is the main form of communication for horses) is a case study for any expert. Very talkative, very dominant. An incredibly intelligent horse and I'm glad to say a very happy and content horse.

This would have been a very decent Juddmonte without Frankel in the race, two rock solid G1 horses in St Nicholas Abbey and Farhh, pulling well clear of Twice Over. The form of this race was unbelievable.. No horse cruises past Farhh (Timeform 133) and St Nicholas Abbey (Timeform130) like that - they where champions.. The scary thing about Frankel is we may never have seen the best of him - he beat Farhh by a length further over 10.5f, than a mile - and with extraordinary ease - you can only imagine how incredible he'd be over 12f - He may have been the first horse to break 150+ with Timeform.

One should never quote Timeform's ratings with any degree of certainty. Farhh 133 ? Seriously ? So You Think gave him a hiding doing far more work in the run a cruising through the line.. Battaash given the same rating as the career unbeaten 15 times Group 1 winner Black Caviar lol lol. Battaash has won a single Group 1 and has been beaten 3 of his last 5. Must be some all time great sprinters in Europe if Black Caviar's equal is getting regularly beaten. Funny how Australian 3yo Merchant Navy goes there and beats them both times he runs and July Cup winner U S Navy Flag goes to Australia and is thrashed in all 3 races he runs in. Silvia Mendoza , Assuming he would've handled the switch from turf to conventional dirt? Some horses handle the switch without issue, but some horses who've raced exclusively on turf end up just spinning their wheels once they try racing on conventional dirt. A great example of that was Fame and Glory in the Breeders Cup Marathon. On paper, the best horse in the race by a street, but ended up as a DNF that day racing on conventional dirt. That being said, had Frankel raced in the Classic and had no issues with the surface switch I don't see the outcome having been anything much more than a foregone conclusion.

+GBeret83 And why would Henry Cecil have ever thought about the Breeder`s Cup or dirt??? He cared about his horses so much that a trip to America was a non starter! Furthermore why should Britain`s greatest racehorse take on the U.S drug scene?? Would you want your beloved horse to race on anti bleeding medication or to not feel pain when injured?? Pain is the bodies warning system! The U.S. puts its Olympic athletes in jail if they take drugs(Marion Jones) but encourages its use in their thoroughbreds. We, in blighty, don`t want that! We want Frankel to live a long healthy life in retirement - red-rum-esque till he`s 30 at least !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Don`t confuse "great horse" with "superhorse" ! He meant horses regarded as well above the average top class horse. All horses are super/great in the opinion of many observers. Superhorse is quite different ! Frankel ,Secretariat, Shergar and Arazi are the ones that we hear repeatedly in England,and before the modern era ;Ribot and Sea Bird II. Secretariat certainly was not a superhorse because he got beaten far too often! Arazi is similar to Secretariat in that he did something extraordinary at Breeders Cup once. None have improved their reputations at stud although poor Shergar was executed by the IRA ,but did produce a lovely filly ;Maysoon, in his first crop of 3year olds ,and she was placed in 1,000 Guineas. I don`t know enough about the two you have mentioned but with solid English pedigrees dating back to great Derby winners such as St Simon(1883) in England, it is possible. However, American racing is too much about blinds, blinkers and Lasix to be taken seriously ! It is also not that good at winning Breeders Cup races where again this year, we saw Europeans dominate the BC Turf. The death of Barbaro at three was a devastating blow for America because he did have the makings of a superstar as American Pharoah is ! Ban Lasix and you will be taken more seriously !

Both DB and Frankel were true greats who ran in different ways. In assessing the 3 races (Frankel's 140 Q Anne/Juddmonte; DB's 138 Arc) the IFHA didn't just rate for winning distance, but added more because of how the horse was travelling. DB had blinding pace at the death, Frankel was barely off the bridle as if he had more to give. Therein lies my doubt. Frankel never showed himself capable of a second surge after his initial acceleration - so I think the IFHA have gone over the top with 140.

ok: 1 - Frankel improved more than Excelebration did from his 3 year old campaign to his 4 year old. He extended the difference in class between them. 2 - the FURTHEST Excelebration has run is 8F, he likes a quick 8F ideally. Side Glance has run well up to 10F. In the QA, O'Brien challenged Frankel, he tried to live with his pace over the 8F on GS, this is why Excelebration ended paddling to the line when Side Glance was running on strongly. -horses mature better than others, they aren't robots

I can't think why they didn't tried him over 12f but remember that after the last race Sir HC said that he could've improved even more in his 5yo but that the owner doesn't wants to race for another year. Look at the sectionals for the champion stakes, last 3 furlongs were done in 12.26, 12.07 and 11.91. Now that was soft ground which means that its actually 11-11.5f on good ground and with the faster final sectionals I don't see how one draws the conclusion he wouldn't had stayed 12f.

Walto mate, the Irish have adopted the British Methodology, they are pretty fortunate that Coolmore is based there because of John Magnier who is arguably the most influential man in racing. But they live and breathe racing and if I'm not mistaken, the racing industry occupies 20% of the working population over there. So perhaps they deserve all that credit.

The Queen Anne was stunning but my understanding is the IFHA upgraded Frankel there too - there's a report in the Independent. Let's not also forget that Excelebration tailed off in the QA after going early with Frankel which exaggerated the gap. The couple of times Frankel was asked for a final spurt, there wasn't that much there. Had he and Cirrus run in this year's muddy Arc it would have been close, and in 1986 DB might have pipped him, who knows? But I'm glad to have seen both these greats.

What was competetion for Frankel? In his 3 year old and 4 year old campaign there wasn't a horse on the planet to touch him over a mile and a mile and quarter on turf. Im pretty certain about that. Excelebration's time in the Breeders Cup mile was quicker than any mile time run in Europe that year, He went down 2 lengths in a track record time after only racing 13 days previously on heavy going at Ascot winning the QE2 very easily...

I don't know Charles but I certainly think there will be more horses like Frankel (although not necessarily quite as good) along soon... the training, behavioural and race management techniques used to help Frankel deliver were highly innovative and effective, and I fully expect them to be replicated and further developed in the coming seasons... which will not only help good horses deliver more, but improve their race-to-race consistency too... anyway, interesting to hear about Kingman...

Listen, before he extended his distance by 2f in the Juddmonte taking the 10f, real racing experts were asked how someone could beat Frankel because clearly he wasn't yet tested over 10f so most of them said that if St Nicholas Abbey was to beat Frankel they would need a pretty strong pace because SNA was doing very good on 1m4f, so if you watch the video that we're commenting now you'll see that there were 3 horses playing as front-runners who raised the overall speed to 39mph,

Also, for this race, this isn't 1 mile 1/4 its 1 Mile 5/16.... So its like 2100m. As well the undulations and running across the track. I can only assume that is why Speed Figures are used to assess performance rather than pure time. As far as speed figures go, he's had 4 of the top 6 this decade. Even if the bare time doesn't stack up. That is pretty impressive.

If the pacemaker was really so ineffective, then why did Cecil persist in using one throughout Frankel's later career? In fact there were 2 reasons, namely (1) to keep the race briskly run - in part to stop a Frankel charge - and (2) to place the race in a context Frankel was behaviourally at home with. There's no question Bullet Train helped settle Frankel and regulate the races he ran in. None of the other greats needed this kind of cosseting. Frankel is a true great but we should accept this.

Goldikova won those races for exactly those reasons. Your point about Athletics is quite a good one though. However, the middle distance Athletics races you mentioned were invented to be run on the Athletics track. That was what it was originally run on. Just like horse racing was invented with the intention to be run on tracks like the undulating straight Rowley mile or courses like Epsom, Doncaster and Ascot.

Who did Frankel need to face worldwide to prove his standing in the World Thoroughbred Ratings? The racing in Europe is very competetive as it is and on his last start in the Champion Stakes he faced the 2nd and 4th best rated horses in the world over 10f/12f, In this race St Nicholas Abbey is a top 10 rated horse who proved when beating Gentildonna last time out that hes a very good animal and hes made to look second rate here...

I actually think Frankel IS flat out. He simply runs with that action and couldn't accelerate further whether he came off the bridle or not. The issues for me are (a) how LONG can he sustain that speed for and (b) Can he do it at the tail end of a brisk race? In this Juddmonte, he got an alpha-plus on both those points.

Check out the Steve Mellish/Brough Scott KZbin Frankel feature and also the interview with Dominic Gardiner-Hill.... very interesting stuff.. I was left feeling that if Dancing Brave had been trained like Frankel to run with a pacemaker - which after all is the reason for Frankel's consistency - then he might have been even better. And there's no question that Dancing Brave's 1986 Arc was the greatest race of modern times. I think in the end Frankel's 140 will be revised a touch downwards...

The legacy of great horses is determined by their achievements, not might-have-beens or capabilities. How quaint that in Frankel's case, some devotees think it should be different. For goodness sake, forget 12F - Frankel achieved zero at this, the Derby, KG & Arc distance. But celebrate his grandeur as a miler, and his brilliance here at York. Nobody doubts he's an all-time great, but all this Frankolatry is absurd. Shock Horror - Frankel had limitations!! Now go and have a nice hot cup of tea.

The Queen Anne was a fluke? What an idiotic comment.. Frankel had strengthened up significantly from his 3 year old to his 4 year old campaign. He was carrying a lot of excess weight in the Lockinge and his connections made it clear he would improve a great deal for the run, which he did! Ballydoyle had just got Excelebration from the Botti stable and had a prep run at the Curragh to fully prep Excelebration for the Lockinge, that's why he was only beaten by 5L, and was destroyed in the Q A..!

Explain to this American... why the absurdly wide turn when they went for home?
@petermoody6147
@petermoody6147 4 жыл бұрын
To: :Leo Bowman - Largely because of the different variables between American and European racecourses and how best to 'race' a horse, on such. Tracks here differ widely in their layout and behaviour to the elements. They are areas of natural countryside that are of relatively flat terrain and consequently the natural drainage can be idiosyncratic. This particular course is in the Vale of York which on occasion is prone to severe flooding. That is why times for horses that race in these (British)conditions do not provide a reliable indicator or metric as to ability. Hence the expression 'horses for courses'. A consistent horse can produce consistent ability and performance but record markedly different racing times. During a race meeting of quite often three days jockeys and trainers have assessed the best route and conditions for their horse to navigate the track to their best advantage, often walking the course on race-day. Taking the shortest route or what appears to be the fastest does not always equate and is secondary to giving the horse its best chance or ability to win . At York (sic. here) it was most likely for it to have been very soft or heavy ground from that point onwards so they all moved to the stand side. Yes, it could be argued for example, superficially that a big advantage could possibly be gained by a jockey choosing to stay on his current path but one must remember that horses are pack animals and his mount may decide that it would rather run alongside its fellow equines or that the ' run' is no longer fun and is 'over'. Ha,ha! This brings to mind another expression, 'always the bridesmaid, never the bride' as it has long been observed that some horses often finish in second place because they do not see themselves as leaders of the pack.
