We are unlikely to see another like Frankel, he is a freak of nature and a TRUE legend. In the Juddmonte he made very good horses look like class 6 no-hopers. He was trotting at the 3F marker and just cruised past them like he was in a training gallop. The reason why this horse is a legend is because of his consistency and truly staggering method oh his victories. No one has ever seen a horse do what he did in the 2000 Guineas. This would have been a very decent Juddmonte without Frankel in the race, two rock solid G1 horses in St Nicholas Abbey and Farhh, pulling well clear of Twice Over. The scary thing about Frankel is we may never have seen the best of him - he beat Farhh by a length further over 10.5f, than a mile - and with extraordinary ease - you can only imagine how incredible he'd be over 12f - He may have been the first horse to break 150+ with Timeform.

Must be some all time great sprinters in Europe if Black Caviar's equal is getting regularly beaten. Funny how Australian 3yo Merchant Navy goes there and beats them both times he runs and July Cup winner U S Navy Flag goes to Australia and is thrashed in all 3 races he runs in. Both DB and Frankel were true greats who ran in different ways. In assessing the 3 races (Frankel's 140 Q Anne/Juddmonte; DB's 138 Arc) the IFHA didn't just rate for winning distance, but added more because of how the horse was travelling. DB had blinding pace at the death, Frankel was barely off the bridle as if he had more to give. Therein lies my doubt. Frankel never showed himself capable of a second surge after his initial acceleration - so I think the IFHA have gone over the top with 140.

Don`t confuse "great horse" with "superhorse" ! He meant horses regarded as well above the average top class horse. All horses are super/great in the opinion of many observers. Superhorse is quite different ! Frankel ,Secretariat, Shergar and Arazi are the ones that we hear repeatedly in England,and before the modern era ;Ribot and Sea Bird II. Secretariat certainly was not a superhorse because he got beaten far too often! Arazi is similar to Secretariat in that he did something extraordinary at Breeders Cup once. None have improved their reputations at stud although poor Shergar was executed by the IRA ,but did produce a lovely filly ;Maysoon, in his first crop of 3year olds ,and she was placed in 1,000 Guineas. I don`t know enough about the two you have mentioned but with solid English pedigrees dating back to great Derby winners such as St Simon(1883) in England, it is possible. However, American racing is too much about blinds, blinkers and Lasix to be taken seriously ! It is also not that good at winning Breeders Cup races where again this year, we saw Europeans dominate the BC Turf. The death of Barbaro at three was a devastating blow for America because he did have the makings of a superstar as American Pharoah is ! Ban Lasix and you will be taken more seriously !

Silvia Mendoza , Assuming he would've handled the switch from turf to conventional dirt? Some horses handle the switch without issue, but some horses who've raced exclusively on turf end up just spinning their wheels once they try racing on conventional dirt. A great example of that was Fame and Glory in the Breeders Cup Marathon. On paper, the best horse in the race by a street, but ended up as a DNF that day racing on conventional dirt. That being said, had Frankel raced in the Classic and had no issues with the surface switch I don't see the outcome having been anything much more than a foregone conclusion.
@postcardterry9 жыл бұрын
+GBeret83 And why would Henry Cecil have ever thought about the Breeder`s Cup or dirt??? He cared about his horses so much that a trip to America was a non starter! Furthermore why should Britain`s greatest racehorse take on the U.S drug scene?? Would you want your beloved horse to race on anti bleeding medication or to not feel pain when injured?? Pain is the bodies warning system! The U.S. puts its Olympic athletes in jail if they take drugs(Marion Jones) but encourages its use in their thoroughbreds. We, in blighty, don`t want that! We want Frankel to live a long healthy life in retirement - red-rum-esque till he`s 30 at least !!!!!!!!!!!!!

@makoceans10 жыл бұрын
everyone's entitled to their opinions but I doubt even the might Dayjur would've posed problems to Frankel over 5f let alone Black caviar over 6f. But hey I'm basing this on the fact that Frankel over 8f at Ascot meeting had an faster furlong than any sprinter in that meeting including BC and Kings stand winner, plus the raw speed displayed as 3yo esp. in the guineas so I'm pretty confident that if trained as a sprinter Frankel would've dominated in the same manner but breeding wise sprinters offer small incentive in Europe to train unlike middle distance horses
@leesog320310 жыл бұрын
makoceans Yeah, I agree with what you say.. It would have been some sight to behold, Frankel and Black Caviar in a Diamond Jubilee, but there's no doubt BC would be first off the Bridle.. Frankel's still on the bit 1 out, gets shaken up, draws clear and wins by a cosy 2 or 3 lengths.. I think everyone outside of Australia would agree.. But sayin that, I don't think we ever seen the best of BC because the competition was generally so substandard, she beat a world-class horse in Moonlight Cloud when only f*cking around with her, and after tearing muscles in her legs and travelling thousands of miles to do so.. but to even dream that she had the same or perhaps superior cruising speed to Frankel, not to mention his stamina advantage, and she may come out on top, is probably a sign you're losing your marbles! :)

This was a momumental year for Frankel.Farrh won two group ones and he and Cirrus Des Aigles,the only two in the field who Frankel had beaten,dominated the Champion Stakes from an Epsom Derby winner.Then last weekend,Side Glance,who Frankel beat eleven lengths won his first Group One.The jigsaw is now complete!

I still love watching this race. To go past a 128 and 130 rated horse on the bridle and begin to extend away is amazing. Farhhs 128 is legitimate, SYT was a 132 rater, Farhh was approx 2 lengths inferior = 128. Excelebration is now a 135 rated horse, and again Frankel left him on the bridle. Incredible.

RIP Sir Henry Cecil. A master trainer and a total genius when it came to training fillies as his record shows. A sad loss for British Racing, Probably one of the last great gentleman of the sport and it seems he held on long enough to see the career of his greatest ever work Frankel. What a story...

Very true. So You Think is the pin up or centrefold when it comes to the thoroughbred, he is a beautiful looking horse and exceptionally well put together. I got one of my mares served by SYT and will get two of my other mares served by him next season.

I'm so glad you are back Wavepattern, I was worried about you. Just to remind you, your jested "English accent" is a pretty good take on Cockney -- the accent from which your Australian accent derives, via the convicts shipped from Britain to your fair shores.

Pacemakers help ensure that a race is a solid test for the full duration of the trip, testing stamina and fitness as well as speed. This is what makes middle-distance racing what it is designed to be and it is what helps make middle-distance racing in Europe the best in the world”

I think you're wrong, he was the greatest over 7f and 10.5f but one who knows horse racing wonders how many top class sprinters could've hold up with his prolonged fast pace and then the burst of acceleration ? One who knows horse racing wonders how much can he stay when in both the juddmonte and champion stakes it took the jockey another 2-3 furlongs to stop him after the finish line. The word for him is unexposed and its simply remarkable to leave the scene like that. Greatest of them all!

he was hit once last season mate. He had a few flicks to keep him straight but was physically struck with the whip once, in the Champion stakes.

@simon picket She's been whipped a few times mostly against Hay list who was the 2nd best sprinter in the world which happened to Frankel when he raced the 2nd best miler in the world Cirrus , she was whipped in her 4th start when she fell at the gate and suffered a muscle tear do you think Frankel with a muscle tear could smash a field ? lol can't wait to hear this one ,

BELOW IS A QUOTE BY TIMEFORM. "Timefigures measure the performance of horses not on their form one against another but in terms of time, in seconds (per five furlongs) faster or slower than a certain fixed standard. Their calculation takes account of track differences, race distances, the ages of the horses concerned, weight-for-age, weights carried, the state of the track surface and the strength and direction of the prevailing wind. Calculation and print-out are by computer."

Remember his 2 year old career ? Where there was no pace in his races ? Everyone was saying that Frankel only won by those huge margins 13 and 10 lengths because he needed slowly run races, they were proven wrong, all of them who said that he needed slowly run races were amazed at his Guineas 2000 win. Now when Frankel's career is over, some like you think that it actually was the other way around and he needed fast run races set by his pacemaker to win..

What was given to horses in US as early as 1971 was Furosemide. (Lasix) a preventative treatment for "Exercise-Induced Pulmonary Hemorrhage" a very common disease which affects the lungs of race horses. Horses with "EIPH" will bleed from the lungs during intensive exercise. Lasix lowers BP. therefore a horse can train harder and longer. It is also a Diuretic. which make the horse lighter and run faster . Sec 167cm 12OOlbs Frankel 165cm around 1300. HELLO!

Frankel is incredible to watch and by studying the form from the past 10 years.I can tell you its unique. Experts from old day say Frankel is unique in the past 50 years so you draw your own conclusion, but in your particular case only after you have done your brain scan :-))))

I know they had their differences, but i wonder whether sometimes Sheik Mohammed regrets his departure from Sir Henrys stables with his top horses. He had alot more success in the big races when he had horses trained there. After the events of the last week i believe a few memories of better times would flood back.

I don't know Charles but I certainly think there will be more horses like Frankel (although not necessarily quite as good) along soon... the training, behavioural and race management techniques used to help Frankel deliver were highly innovative and effective, and I fully expect them to be replicated and further developed in the coming seasons... which will not only help good horses deliver more, but improve their race-to-race consistency too... anyway, interesting to hear about Kingman...

@thebrasenose, you're missing the point, no one said he raced over 12F but based on the EVIDENCE from his last 2 races where he ended his races with faster and faster sectionals in champion stakes or faster than any other horse in Juddmonte one who knows horse racing can tell he could have stayed another 1-2 furlongs. Like Brough Scott said "Frankel is probably the best miller that has ever graced the turf BUT he has to share the title of best middle horse"
@makoceans11 жыл бұрын
I can't think why they didn't tried him over 12f but remember that after the last race Sir HC said that he could've improved even more in his 5yo but that the owner doesn't wants to race for another year. Look at the sectionals for the champion stakes, last 3 furlongs were done in 12.26, 12.07 and 11.91. Now that was soft ground which means that its actually 11-11.5f on good ground and with the faster final sectionals I don't see how one draws the conclusion he wouldn't had stayed 12f.

I didnt mean to, but hey! I saw Frankel in the Queen Anne and the Champion, the latter was by the far the most emotional sporting event I have been to, he was immense

What was competetion for Frankel? In his 3 year old and 4 year old campaign there wasn't a horse on the planet to touch him over a mile and a mile and quarter on turf. Im pretty certain about that. Excelebration's time in the Breeders Cup mile was quicker than any mile time run in Europe that year, He went down 2 lengths in a track record time after only racing 13 days previously on heavy going at Ascot winning the QE2 very easily...
@joshuadoherty670411 жыл бұрын
He wasn't fully extended in, His Maiden, his second race at Doncaster, The Royal Lodge, The Greenham, The Sussex, The Lockinge, he wasn't hit in the Queen Anne, The Juddmonte. He was fully extended and hit in in, The Dewhurst, The 2000 Guineas, The SJP, The QEII and The Champion Stakes. I make that 5 out of 14 rather than the 11 you mention.

Look up the term IDLING in Horseracing. He came back to paddock in the Gns & SJP not even blowing or sweating. It was mentioned by commentators. Quotes! "TQ dismissed suggestions that his mount had been tiring. "He was starting to get a little fed up as he just does it so easily," said the jockey. Sir Henry Cecil (RIP) added: "He wasn't at all tired, he just thought he'd done enough. That's good really, it means we can settle him in behind now"
@joshuadoherty56212 жыл бұрын
Yes but they aren't running on the same day, they are running on different days, when conditions vary. That's why you get time figures and form figures, Both are much more valuable than just time on its own. Try running 100m on fast hard ground on a calm day. Record your time. Then do it on sludgy ground and compare your time. Which do you think will be fastest?

Frankel on the gallops in 2011 Numb Nuts, when he was asked to quicken. He just took off out of control, and out pace the local Newmarket/Newbury train. One newspaper hack seeing this out of curiosity timed him at 9.5secs for 1f.

For the Queen Anne I think they did go an actual winning distance but for the Juddmonte they added an extra 2 on to his winning distance. Judging by how mucg ground he put on that field in 100 yards, It may be that the rating is conservative if anything.

I would not go as far as saying the best racing is over here. The quality on a worldwide basis is fantastic. The US, Australia, Japan, Hong Kong to name a few countries who produce champions to grace the turf on a global scale. The variety of British and Irish racing is brilliant. You cant beat watching a damn good chaser destroying the opponents, while jumping like a stag.
@stu32324 жыл бұрын
Still can't get over how easily he started to gap SNA and Farhh 2 or 3 lengths here without being asked. I think he had 9+ lengths on those 2 if fully asked this day. Staggering to be able to do that to horses of that calibre.

@earp61able I can comfortably say one is better than the other as does every racing authority on earth.BC is no doubt a great sprinter but that is all she is.Frankel has done things in Europe which at the moment is the middle distance capital of the world,that no other horse has done regularly to opponents. That makes him the best we've seen whether you are from Europe or Jupiter.
