I remember hearing the podcast when it released and thinking they were way too harsh on Karl, all that stuff was a decade away at most in my mind. Nearly 2 decades later, now I've worked with various VR and AR dev kits, I see grifters like Musk milking governments tax coffers for unproven tech that doesn't have a chance as it stands, all those Microsoft Hololens' the US military bought gathering dust as they can't find any practical applications for them etc. I now think Ricky was more right then than he knew.

Not in '03. The animated series is adapted from the podcasts, in addition to containing some original material. That places its contents between 2005 and 2011. In this very episode Karl makes a reference to An Idiot Abroad, which was filmed in 2009 at the earliest.
