It is wrong to say that Germany has 'failed' to build more high speed rail lines. Compared to France, where everything is centered on Paris, Germany is polycentric. There are not many places in Germany where it would make sense to build a 300kph high speed line, since traveling on it for 30 mins (thus 150km) you would likely by-bass one or two large cities of 250,000 to 500,000 people. German rail is more built around a dense network of speedy (200km/h) routes with frequent service and more frequent stops, rather than ultra-high speed likes. Germany only has 250kph and 300kph lines were there are less densely populated areas between major cities.
@LS-Moto3 жыл бұрын
That is true for NRW, but certainly not all of Germany. There are plenty of places where 300kph high speed lines would make sense. From NRW to Berlin and/or other eastern parts would be one example.

The biggest problem of German Railway ist not a missing high speed line. We have a general problem with missing tracks, interchanges and overfilled railwaytstations with trains. This causes a lot of delays. Building new tracks and rebuild old tracks for general rail service is more important than to build one high speed line. HighSpeed alone does not make an attractive and modern train service. Further Germany ist smaller than France and has a different settlement structure with a lot of cities which need an own ICE ore other long-distance-service-Connection. The ICE has often not enough time to increase on 300 km/H. Finally Germany has a lot of Mountain-Rainges, so there are a lot of Bridges and tunnels need to build a high-speed-line which makes the whole line really expensive. Some parts of the route from your ICE will need a refresh but a high-speed Line could be to expensive and uneconomical.

By watching the passing landscape It´s easy to see why France is more successful in building high speed tracks: It is way less populated than Germany. I have taken the train from Frankfurt to Paris and after the German-French border you see.....nothing. Huge fields, and farmland, here and there a few houses. AND the ground is quite flat. No bridges or tunnels needed. If you annonce to plan a new track here in Germany, trouble is not far away.

This ICE detour took 42 minutes to get from Frankfurt to Mannheim. The detour starts at Mannheim Waldhof; it exist since 1985. Trains to Basel and Stuttgart had to change engines in Mannheim. Fastest time is 37 minutes if you avoid the detour, but than you have to change direction. Frankfurt - Karlsruhe is 63 minutes, but than you must find the right connection to Paris. In theory it is faster via Strasbourg, but that area between Mannheim and Saarbrucken is limited in speed. Both Karlsruhe and Frankfurt have 4 direct trains to Paris Est.

The connection from Frankfurt to Paris isn't good on the German side. However, Frankfurt to Mannheim is being upgraded to allow 320 km/h. Wonderful narration and video! I had the opportunities to ride the trains between Munich and Paris a several years ago. One thing I noticed the most was the trains travelled on the right-hand side in Germany then switched to left-hand side when entering France. If I had to choose between SNCF TGV and DB ICE, I would choose the latter for three reasons. One is the seat reservations: SNCF required the seat reservations when purchasing the tickets. I was frustrated when I tried to book the last-minute business trip the day before the departure. I ended up buying the ticket on board. The German conductor warned me about having to move around when travelling in French section. I had to move from one seat to other seats a several times when French passengers showed up with seat reservations. I had no problem with Deutsche Bahn ICE, which is first-come, first-served if they're not reserved in advance. Other is HOW CRAMPED the seats are in TGV as compared to ICE. The legroom in TGV first class seats is tighter than ICE second class seats. It's even worse and more tighter in TGV second class. The restrooms in TGV is depressingly dark and tiny as compared to ICE. Why did TGV stick small dustbins against the wall in the legroom in the older first class sections? They rubbed against my legs so I found a way to detach them and toss them in the overhead luggage bin. Lastly, DB ICE has hot meal service and restaurant/bistro. When travelling first class, the passengers can order hot meal to be delivered to their seats or eat in the restaurant/bistro. TGV didn't. Just cold sandwiches and pastries. The first class passengers receive the complimentary meals in TGV, but they're cold sandwiches and salad. No vegetarian or vegan options were ever offered. The attendant felt bad for me because I wanted the vegetarian option. I never understand why in Paris, we have to wait for the announcements to find out which track to board the train. Usually 15 minutes before the departure and lot of stampede to board the train quickly. In Germany, they're always posted ahead of departure time...
@Sedna0634 жыл бұрын
You can absolutely get a seat reservation with German ICEs. They are marked at the seats with (for example) Mannheim - Leipzig. Meaning this seat is reserved for someone travelling from Mannheim - Leipzig.

Platform number for your train is announced a lot more time than 15 minutes before departure, in general. I doubt there is a lot of difference between Fra and Ger, here. In relation to SnCF/DB comparison, the TGV system is a mass transportation system, it's true there is not a lot of differençe between first and second class whereas The ICEs are still very exec/business oriented. It's going to be interesting to see what the new TGVs will look like. They should appear in the months to come.

Siemens had a lot of problems with these trains so they finished testing in 2013. 4 trains then were ready to enter the service. In 2015 only 15 of 17 ordered were in service. In 2016 they managed to get this train ready for traveling to France. These are the latest addition to the "old" ICE 3 family. And yes. Due to bad tracks with no highspeed whatsoever, they decided to step back on highspeed down to 320. The track between Frankfurt and Cologne is one of the most frequented tracks in Germany and it is only for highspeed trains. And with the older models of the ICE 3, you are able to reach up to 340km/h downhill. You reach Cologne only 45-50 minutes after leaving Frankfurt. From here you could travel to Paris with the famous Thalys. (Not right now due to Corona of course) But it is a nice trip, and the Thalys is a beautiful train.
@Sedna0634 жыл бұрын
Not exactly correct. There are 4 tracks for operations for up to 300 kilometers per hour: -Köln - Frankfurt -Ingolstadt - Munich -Ebensfeld - Erfurt -Erfurt - Leipzig / Halle None of those tracks will feature 340 kilometers an hour (the tracks aren't certified for such speeds, certification for 300 kilometers an hour requires 330 test drive). If the ICE drives 304, the train will automatically slow down. By the way, more such 300 lanes are planned. -Mannheim - Frankfurt -Würzburg - Nürnberg -Hamm - Hannover -The existing Wolfsburg - Berlin 250 line is proposed to be upgraded to 300. Don't forget the 280 km/h lines of Mannheim - Stuttgart and Hannover - Würzburg. And right now under construction is Stuttgart - Ulm, for 250 but because it is so steep, there aren't any trains that could run 300.

....so wish we had trains like this in the states. With 9 KM to go to the destination and a US passenger train would be lucky to be going maybe 50 - 60 KMH. and closer in, down to 25 KMH Outside of the Northeast corridor Acela and Metroliner trains, the average speed of most medium and long haul routes here is around 110 - 125 KMH. We really don't have anything like other nations where passenger trains can operate at high speed for long stretches, partly because they must share the same rails with slower freights and commuter rail as well as poor track conditions in some areas. (some stretches are only single track as many lines were dismantled or allowed to deteriorate so badly they are unusable) We are so behind much of the world when it comes to rail transport. I still hope to make an extended visit to Europe someday and experience travelling on some of these lines. I may not want to go home.
@msr11164 жыл бұрын
I'd rather have my Federal taxes go to something other than long distance rail service comparatively few use. Those days are long over. In ten years I knew one person who used Amtrak. We're a nation of drivers and flyers. Let trains continue to haul freight and as local but slow service for urban/suburban commuters.

@@msr1116 ...like what? Putting more into weapon of death and destruction as well as more endless wars to keep the MICC humming along? More "welfare" for corporations and the wealthy? Putting a person on Mars (when robotic probes have more than proven their value)? The airline industry has been totally sucker punched by the pandemic both worldwide and here in the States. Recently, Delta, the largest carrier of the "big three", has announced it posted 6.9$ billion in losses due to the pandemic. Nearly 50,000 workers have recently been furloughed in the domestic airline industry alone (an not all will get their jobs back). All airlines are planning to reduce service and routes in the wake much of it to communities which will have no other alternative. You also do realise that the airlines and the automobile are still "subsidised" though more indirectly by the federal, state, and local governments. Construction, maintenance, and upgrading of airports, terminals and runways are paid for by local state and federal revenue. The FAA and national ATC system is federally funded. Likewise the automobile is supported by tax revenue for highways and urban streets. Also, both benefit form subsidies and tax breaks to the oil industry. We will not see a return to the same level of air service prior to the pandemic. Airlines have been retiring older aircraft, which for some is a significant part of their fleet, so fleets are being thinned drastically in some cases, which in turn means fewer aircraft available for flights . If the airlines are already in such desperate situation that they need a total 53$ billion bailout (25$ billion in April with another 28$ billion currently being considered by the government) just to stay afloat, where is the money supposed to come from to purchase more expensive newer technology aircraft to replace the ones retired? Even relatively new aircraft like the A-380 (British and Qantas) 747 8i (Lufthansa) and 777 (Delta) are being put to pasture. Add to this the travel bans imposed against the US by other nations (thanks to the poor response of our government to the pandemic) including our immediate neighbours. Earlier this summer several states even banned travel to/from ones that were Covid "hotbeds", and we are now looking at a second wave approaching while the first one has not even abated. Oh, there may be some discount fares to lure people back when the situation finally begins to measurably improve, but don't count on that being the norm like it was before. Business travel has taken a big hit and will continue to do so as many companies have seen the benefit of virtual instead of in-person conferencing (United recently announced a preposterous and rather costly idea to businesses in an attempt to try and win those travellers back). It is those tickets which subsidise the cheap fares for other travellers. Finally, what if there's another crisis, like say international tensions or even a regional war that drives the price of fuel up? Like other corporations, the airline industry here was just as short sighted, squandering roughly 40$ billion of the savings from the 2017 tax breaks for on stock buybacks that only benefited wealthy shareholders and CEOs/executives who have stock in the company as part of their benefits package. Oh and by the way, you now know (virtually speaking) another person who uses Amtrak.

In eastern France there are still fields with very irregular holes, it's the old craters of shells that became like this with time. :) But there are other reminders of French - German wars along the frontier, ancient blockhaus, you even have a quarter in Freiburg (Germany) that is name "Vauban" because there used to be a French fortress there.
