Draw your design out on graph paper. Drawing it double the size needed will help with accuracy when measuring the angles. Or, you could just attack it with mathematics. Or even a combination of both.

Bravo Frank.. As a fellow engineer, inventor , and woodworker your visualization regarding the orientation of the individual chords transitioning into segments, and ultimately producing a pattern dependant ,symmetrical sphereoid is both impressive and mentally soothing . Midway through the video I started to visualize a box design!!! Possibly a center ring either solid or chords. Mechanical design mechanism potential. Incorporate spring loaded plungers that will provide axially clearance, and then mini zero protrusion hinges , possibly a scaled down version of Blum 155 Zero protrusion hinge. Design in a small rare earth magnet for the catch, or build a leaf spring into the hinge ( aka soft close). This design would allow the 2 halves to close seamlessly, and then pop up, and then swing away for the hinge mechanism. Might need to work a weight into a large counterbore in what would be the bottom section... It's difficult to explain seeing the invisible to folks whom dont have the opportunity to explore that realm. However very rewarding when you can get a young engineer away from Solid Works, and think through a design as if they are machining it from solid material. Peace and Joy to you and yours..

One way to turn the box would be to make a sphere out of some scrap wood and glue the two halves on it just enough to be securely held in as you cut the outside. Removing would work kinda like when you split an avocado in half, twisting the two halves.

For finishing the sphere, I like to drill three screws through a piece of plywood in a triangle pattern, flip it over so the pointy ends are up, and set the piece on them. You do end up with three little points to touch up when it dries, but when finishing something lightweight (box, sphere, pine derby racer, etc) it's the best way I've found. Just be sure not to lay the "holding jig" on the floor pointy ends up and accidentally step on it! ;-D

For future reference, if you want to see how a flat pattern will look on a sphere, it's fairly easy to do in sketchup. Just draw a sphere, draw the pattern on a plane where the center matches the sphere's center, extrude the patter into and past the sphere, intersect faces with selection, then delete everything outside of the sphere; this will draw the projection of the pattern onto the sphere, and you'll know what it looks like beforehand.
