Yup. As an ISTP, one thing I've had to learn to do to be more disciplined, focused, and purposeful is to learn to appreciate limitations. Say I have a task at work, but there's a set of restrictions placed on me. After the initial flare of anger, I try to force myself to look at things more as a challenge, a puzzle to be solved. It forces me to be creative and to think laterally, be resourceful, try new things. It can be pretty satisfying just in the attempt itself, let alone actually achieving my goal.

I dont think for the Ne types its so much future focused searching as much as idea-collecting, where as Se is experience collecting. The ideas can be future or present or past or not bound to time (correct me if I'm wrong I know nothing)
@luneakvic
@luneakvic 3 жыл бұрын
@@sourgrapes7482 Exactly. Ideas are not bound by time, I'm guessing that OP was generalizing on what Frank said at 10:55, which can be misleading. N is not necessarily future-focused, it is about seeking patterns in concepts. They tend to skip ahead on the information from the five senses, as they are "obvious, mundane, and irrelevant to their worldview". People with Ne-dom or the _N_P types especially, they find connections and branch very wide, because they don't want to miss anything out. They just tend not to go deep into the gathered information because they seek variety. Ni-dom or _N_J types tend to organize the abstract information gathered to form their own strong foundation, which is why they restrict themselves because they focus on organizing the patterns, not seeking variety. Which is why they tend to be "future-focused", it's just because they try to generalize as much stuff as possible from the strong foundation they built to make better decisions in the future according to themselves. TLDR: N types are not necessarily future-focused. Especially not for _N_P types (doesn't mean that they don't have the ability to focus on the future)

I'm an INTP who marries an ISFJ. I'm often amazed to see how she gets things done while I'm still busy thinking of how things could be. When we moved to where we live now, we saw an unkempt backyard. My NP brain couldn't help but overwhelmed by the thought of how much work needs to be done. Cleaning, hoeing, carrying gravels, paving blocks, etc. But my wife was determined to make a garden, so she started working right away while I was thinking what is the most efficient way to do it. In the end, her way of doing things worked. We now have a nice garden in the backyard with vegetables, flowers, gravel pathway, and picnic area. Internet is full of intuitives discussing because sensors are out there in the real world, working and actually get things done. Respect for sensors.

I'm ENFP and my parents were both SJs. I got punished for asking questions and not immediately trusting every single thing they told me, and they kept telling me to focus on one topic at a time, refusing to let me branch off and explore at all. As an adult, I have never felt freer. I can finally learn everything I want and refine whatever skill I want. Of course, now they say I'm an underachiever and have no direction, but I kinda prefer it that way.

same here 🤦🏾‍♀️ They believe things that "Authority figures" told them even if they didn't observe it for themselves They are also judgemental of anybody who feels or thinks differently or has different ideas than them My curiosity and joy for new things was seen as naïveté and being irresponsible. I agree it's better as an Adult as you can finally do what you think is best and discover new things for yourself and even explore even new areas you were holding back from. I wish I had had an ENFP or INFP mother It was painful at times
@m_n_a_b
@m_n_a_b Жыл бұрын
I'm ENFP with an ENFP dad and an ISTJ mom. She was always super judgmental of everything I did, how I looked, what I wore, what I ate. I hated it. My Dad wasn't that way with me, but he was incredibly strict on my schooling, because he saw my aptitude and didn't want me to end up like him. He never applied himself because of his P, so he ended up in dead end blue collar jobs for years. He wanted more for me than that, so he pushed me hard in school. The result is that I have a very boring clothing style and am unsure how to spruce it up. I also had a very hard time figuring out what I like and didn't like... so there has been a lot of exploration as an adult to discover who the heck I am. Also, I can be incredibly organized and put together, but it requires all my focus. I feel like a failure if any one thing goes wrong in my plans. I am perfectionistic with my work. And I'm utterly drained and want to throw it all away and head for a tropical paradise by the end of the day. I also crave travel like crazy because I need something interesting to do and see and experience. Anyway, it's so weird how upbringing can augment the natural flow of someone's type. Yet, it wasn't able to change it.

These things are so nuanced! For example, my husband and I (like everyone else) got into chess this year. He’s ENTP. He played for 1 month and already entered and competed in 2 competitions. He’s obsessed with meeting and playing other chess players, and improving his ranking. He’s played 200+ games. I’m INTJ. I’ve played for one month and have been hung up on learning all the variations of the Sicilian Defense and knowing the game theory deeply. In my theory obsession, I’ve only played about 27 games total. My ranking is worse than his, but my win/loss ratio is way better. Also, the idea of competing against a real person or going to a competition feels really premature to me. Very different approaches to the same game!

@@neraimathik6547 INTJ here. I spent my entire winter break playing chess and ignoring everything else. I became really obsessed with the game and I wanted to learn as quickly and efficiently as possible the wining strategies and the tactics. I was watching videos, analyzing games from grand masters, reading etc.... But as a student, I eventually had to temper this newly found obsession out. It was frustrating at first, but eventually I got my focus back on what truly matters for the time being (aka my studies). I didn't drop chess altogether though. I do like it and I plan on taking it back once things get a bit more steady (currently in the middle of exams). Ni can fairly easily become obsessed toward something that has triggered the individual's interest. So speaking from experience; if you currently have important matters to attend to, don't start chess now haha.

Well I'm definitely a "P" type because the only way my ducks will ever be in a row is if I shoot them and line them up. 😂 So flipping this around, someone should be able to figure out if they're an SP, NP, SJ or NJ by finding out what they struggle with most which would be their opposite preference? For example, an NP would struggle with SJ type things most (organizing the sensory) and an NJ would struggle with SP most (experiencing the sensory), right?

@@FrankJames I saw the J/P's first picture of your video so a comment was spontaneous. I think J/P dicothomy is nonsense, if you use it to determine organization level of someone. The reason is pretty simple: for example, how should INFJs be NECESSARILY organized if Ni+Fe is not about structure, productivity and planning? Maybe an MBTI IxxJ can have those characteristics, but it's a pretty individual factor: we can't associate everything to dicothomies (and, however, dichotomies are the worst typing method, because if you do like this, using tests like 16personalities, your results will change according to the mood, because you're not OR an x OR an y).
@mattiat.6697
@mattiat.6697 3 жыл бұрын
(2/2) The problem is this: IxxJ are, in reality, PERCEIVING dominant; and IxxP are JUDGING dominant. So Myers-Briggs has done a huge interpretative mistake in deciding J and P on external world apparent structure or flexibility, because in the original "Psychological Types" by Carl Jung, the fourth dicotomy (rational and irrational) wasn't necessarily determined by an external point of view. This is just a convention that Myers-Briggs exstablished to determine which people would apparently function best in a work environment, but, in my opinion, the stack and her definition of J/P are pretty in contradiction in introverts.
@reonaranara
@reonaranara 3 жыл бұрын
@@mattiat.6697 IxxJ are introverted perceiving dominant. Saying introverted perceiving dominant would make them anything like an high extroverted perceiving user would be like saying that just because a duck can swim it's a fish. This isn't the best explanation, but the introverted functions process the outside world, which is brought in by the extroverted functions. Bringing in definitions of J and P- J is narrowing down while P is including everything. So, IxxJ will process (by S/N (which is actually just Si/Ni lmao) and store all of their information internally, while they narrow down the stream of outside information externally. But, since you need to have information before processing it, the introverted function will act like a "filter" before finalizing everything. This is why IxxJs are more "judgey"- they have a filter, with bias towards N or S, and then the world is more narrowed down by their judging function, before finally being processed and stored. For IxxPs, they will have a filter of T or F before storing things. IxxPs tend to have an internal structure of stuff. So, technically, introverts are more "judgey" than their extroverted counterparts because they don't immediately take their information in. Also, for the record, I agree that typing by dichotomies is nonsense. I'm sorry if I offended you in any way, shape, or form. The thing is, J/P isn't dichotomies- it's functions. (This is why I'm fine with xSxJ or IxxP but not as fine with something like xNFx- xSxJ is Si user, IxxP is Ti or Fi dominant, xNFx is... Ni or Ne and Fi or Fe in some order which is kinda sorta pointless but its still fINe)

I've seen a way to find your type somewhere in Instagram: First you find your extroverted function, because it's the most obvious one. So, do you relate more to Fe, Te, Ne or Se? (as an xnfj you should relate more to Fe) If you chose Fe or Te, you must now see whether you relate more to Ni or Si. If you chose Ne or Se, you must find out if you relate more to Ti or Fi. And now you have two possible types. Now let's see how you act under a lot of stress. The function you use in very stressful situation is your inferior function. Also about jumping hobbies as P types do,I can't do that. It takes me ages and lots of information and insights to convince myself to get into anything new. Hell I can't even watch a show or movie without reading about its theme, reviews etc. and then convince myself to finally start watching it. As an N type I like to see why the things are happening ,make a theory about it and then gather information to support that theory rather than just seeing everything as facts. This has been the most useful video I've seen of yours. I am an isfp and my brother is an infj, and he is very religious. We have this continuously recurring conversation on God and ultimate truth or reality. He always seems to start from an answer he believes is correct and refines his understanding purely through that context, and I remain uncertain of conclusions and I base what I accept about what is ultimately true on how it squares with my expanding knowledge and observations of physical world. He seems frustrated with insistence on measuring reality by that metric and I end up confused and frustrated in being asked to overlook those things and limit my scope of vision in discernment of truth. To be fair, he probably sees my using the observable physical world as a measuring stick as a limitation as well, but his measuring stick for truth and reality is foreign to me and I feel lost and confused if I attempt to use it.

This is a excerpt from the response I wrote addressing this comment. I am not placing the entire thing here because it seems out of place here. Daniel,I think there is much to be said in regards to our cognitive differences. As an INFJ I feel most at home with abstractions and intangibles; with symbols and metaphors. It is there where we can encapsulate much larger truths, much truer truths then in the specific tangibles which are quite opaque and subject to anomalies and misinterpretation. I wouldn’t categorize my preference for the abstract as a disdain for the “facts on the ground” but as a reverence for the metaphysical, as a legend on the print which guides our understanding as we seek to make sense of our observations. And so, there are some observations which I simply see as a distraction, I cannot see [yet] how they integrate into the larger picture. I see being concerned with tangental data points, rather than working outward from the center of the composition [that is reality] is a sort of “cart before the horse”, and may even be detrimental to the recognition of the hidden When one puts together a puzzle, they find first an area of focus from which they can make sense of the pieces within the composition. Perhaps the edges, it is easy enough to distinguish the edge pieces from the chaotic anonymity of the irregular internal pieces. Perhaps it is some other portion of the composition which for whatever reason clicks for the discerning person. But that becomes for them the focal point. There will inevitably be pieces that do not seem to integrate with the portion from which your attention is affixed. It is not wrong then to set them to the side, it may even be a distraction to jump from theme to theme within the composition, one is subject to make mistakes. It is better then to uncover the center of the composition working out from there. In this way we can ensure that we reconstruct the image without distorting it; that all the elements find there place contextually with the center of the work. I think that perhaps you and I are working on the same puzzle, yet arguing about where the central focus of the composition lies. And that our interpretation of the whole, is affected by what we call the center. For me that center is Christ. For you, I am not sure what that is. It may be because of my zeal for the discussion I haven’t given you ample time to voice that. Although I think too that you have some difficulty articulating too what that is. My ongoing theory is that you yourself are operating from a particular set of pre-judgments which are quite unique to yourself, I don’t see why the presuppositions of one person can be truer to that of another’s unless there is one specific truth beyond all truths which informs a persons presuppositions. I call this truth Christ; the image of the living God, who holds all things together and is indeed outside of time itself. How would you characterize or describe the nature of this highest truth?

@@iNFlecTi0n I didn't mean to imply that you disdain the "facts on the ground." Only that it seems for you they are only of interest in reference to what you see as the larger picture. You seem to see combing through the parts as having the potential to misguide, and I tend toward the assumption that assuming the correctness of the percieved big picture without assessing if the pieces actually paint that picture can create a vision of reality that is misaligned with what the big picture actually looks like. I like to use metaphor and symbol in art, but those symbols mean nothing to me if they aren't abstracted representations of elements of base reality. It seems that you lead with an assumption of what the big picture is, and allow the pieces to refine that, and I lead with a set of assumptions about what the pieces look like as a means to assess what the big picture looks like.

The term “analysis paralysis” was coined for us. The other downside is that if I don’t have new experiences and input or access to it, I die inside. I also strongly agree with your NP vs NJ analogy. I work in the software world and my job title includes the word “innovation”. My job is to find new ways to use things, and explore possibilities, and you described exactly how my brain works. To me, I most often look at a thing, and rather than seeing what it is, I see its potential and possibilities, or how it could be improved upon. Thankfully, we have NJs whose job it is to distill those ideas.

I want to know. also, yes I mentioned this before, but the enneagram songs by Sleeping at Last are amazing imo. if anyone in this comment section is also into the enneagram, I recommend you check them out. I, as a type 2, have never felt more understood *ever* than when I listened to "Two". I thought "Nine" and "Eight" were beautiful too. great songs. imo.

Me personally as an INFP don't have too much problems working with extroverts, but often having more troubles with S types. Lots of conversations between me and S types ended with "You can only see things right in front of you and never learn any lessions" vs. "You're so off the ground and tries to predict everything without clear facts". N and S are the biggest difference between people sharing ideas for what I see personally😂

I'm also INFP and I definitely agree. I have always had more extroverts in my life than introverts, and extroversion is not what makes things challenging. With S types I always think, "Why can't you see the bigger picture? Why can't you see what's really happening here?" While the S types look at me like I've just sprouted a second head.

This is super interesting. Dated someone who i now suspect was a P type (I'm a J type) and it was almost like he would proactively make sure I didn't limit him even though I would be doing nothing. Like he would almost have this 1950s rebel challenge vibe and I'm like...im literally doing nothing to limit you, im just trying to enjoy hanging out with you haha. Plans were often broken, he'd show up at my place spontaneously, or want me to be available when he had a whim... it was kind of exhausting 😂 But there were some fun times when he got me out of my comfort zone.

I've been looking to switch my job because I think I've learned everything from my current job and feel like there isn't much personal growth here and I feel LIMITED. Also I look at homes in different cities online because I lived in the same city for 10 years now and I want to switch up my environment and go to a completely new place and meet new people and just bring a change into my life. Also I am always down for a spontaneous hangouts and random social events.

In terms of MBTI there is a big difference between ENTJ and ENTP. From what you said, I would think you are ENTJ. Se is in the conscious stack so ENTJs are up for exploring like a child to gain new experiences. For an ENTP, although new experiences are nice, it is more about new ideas. ENTPs debate to gather new ideas. ENTJs use their voice to get things done and make sure things are working instead of to gather new ideas. Another way to look at the function stack difference would be the cognitive loops when stressed. ENTPs will disregard their logic and reasoning and go into a Ne - Fe loop while an ENTJ would disregard their Ni... and Since I am an ENFP... Ni is difficult for me to comprehend. so *insert your understanding of NI here* and go into a Te - Se loop. I also have found something interesting when taking the 16personalities dot com test... I can get my percentages of P/J to switch places with my A/T ... and although no matter what I do I am an ENFP-A... *IF* My A is a 90% then my P will be a 70% and if I try to be less assertive taking the test then my A will be 70% BUT my P will be 90%. I know 16 personalities dot come is a mixture of MBTI and OCEAN test but I wonder if others see this "fourier transform"

Well this explains a lot of things. I keep seeing the same patterns over and over again in different scenarios, and has a tendency to oversimplify things to one fundamental truth. Some insights that I've gained as an INFJ, through my ISTP ex was his sensory skills and ability in being present. He would notice all the little berries and mushrooms during our hikes, that I would have otherwise totally missed being an INFJ. I'd love to learn about which types would best match with which in an ideal scenario, if it hasn't been done already.

This is interesting. Helped me understand how you (I) can kinda be 2 types at once. In my 20s I used to always test as INFP. Mid thirties and beyond I always test as INFJ. I have both modes at different times. Gathering too much info /options then at other times limiting and simplifying. Same thing with spontaneity /planning. I flip modes lol. But INF never varies.

I don't think it is so much about not getting a lot of information for xxx J, it is about doing something with it or understand it for which... you do need to refine it, classify it, organize it, etc. for which at some point exploring stops, but we will take in more info, we would just have to integrate it in a system.

I know you're going for brevity lately, but when discussing J/P the functions' order will be very different depending on whether it's an introverted or an extroverted type, and it's disapointing the video never mentions it. An ISXJ will have their perceiving function first (so will be more like the usual P type, being double decider in the middle of the stack), and the ESXJ will have the judging function first, making their judging much more significant. I think when trying to talk about many types at once, the middle letters (ex : XNTX) or the functions individually are a much more accurate way to approach it, outside of the platitudes anyone can find on 16p.
@mariek.474
@mariek.474 3 жыл бұрын
@Liz M Even in basic MBTI (when it's well explained with nuances) it's flipped for the introverts : In "Gifts Differing", Isabel Briggs Myers gives the metaphor of the army general giving his second-in-command the responsability of the outside world in the case of an introvert, so the J/P representing this attitude towards the outside world, it will be the *second* function of the stack for an introvert, not the first as for an extrovert. I remember FJ saying he has read that book I mention in a video years, years ago. I don't think he's really ignorant of it, but likely cutting corners or forgetting.
@mariek.474

@@LouiseJosephine Ohhh yes. I definitely hear you. An INFJ getting excited when talking about something or being attuned to others is often said ""probably an ENFJ"", but I know in my case that if the group wants spontaneity and carelessness but I don't, my dominant Ni (with the help of Ti) will call the shots in the end to assert what I want (time to observe, planning, knowing what I'm getting into in advance etc)...whereas an ENFJ in the same situation might rely on their Fe much more and also their Se, get excited about the new possibilities and not be as resistant to the group's expectations. About the last point, some other youtubers like LiJo and Renaud Contini have made a point lately to talk about functions as an axis (Se always paired with Ni, Te with Fi, etc.), to stop ignoring the balance and influence of the other function that is clearly there, regardless of where the pair is in the functions stack. It's something really missing generally : to talk about introverts vs extraverts, thinkers vs feelers, judgers vs perceivers or intuitives vs sensors as if they're isolated traits in MBTI is quite a lazy shortcut, maybe to appeal to a wider audience. In the end, the functions stack of someone will be represented by the *whole* of them, not piece-by-piece (as I pointed out for example, an extraverted P type is not the same at all as an introverted P type).
