5 Tips to know BEFORE you 3D Print Cosplay!

Always going to start with a Thank You. I appreciate the work you do. I have no illusions, this is a job. I'm about a year into 3d printing after picking up an Ender 3 for $100. Great crossover from laser experience and the applications for Halloween costumes in this space are mind blowing. As a crafter, curious mind, not sure how it took me so long to pick one up. Anyway, your info is amazing and I plan on continuing my dive. Sounds like you were in the UK and now back in the US so good that we'll be dealing with the same product availability. Keep up the good work. Understand it take s lot to pump out the content and want you to have no illusions that it is appreciated.

Don’t be worried, just make sure you do your research so you don’t mess up, and if you haven’t bought a printer yet , make sure you get a reliable one because it will save you hours of frustration

6:29 the “cut to parts” checkbox in the orcaslicer cut tool also keeps the parts together rather than dropping to the build plate

Would it be possible to print gears for the inside of an iron man helmet, and the faceplate still be connected to gears without it being “motorized” like could I flip the faceplate up manually without servos and any electronics? Love your videos and hope you have a good day!

Meshmixer does still work on Mac! Just need to use the wayback machine to download the most recent version! I still run it on my M1 Pro MacBook Pro!

For even stronger joins you could use a plastic welder that melts metal pins into the joins - the kinds used to repair car bumpers

What I do is take things into Zbrush and make each part have either a key or socket that fits into one another using what is called a Boolean. So when it’s glued it’s much stronger. You could probably do this with Blender which is free. I learnt a lot from this video I had never heard of purse clasp magnets or the different type of foam inserts before

Great video. Very concise. Meshmixer is great. Armorsmith can be frustrating and hasn’t seen any updates in a long time. Make sure you save your profile! It seems to randomly loose it!

3D prints are so great! It made cosplays more accessible. A decade ago I would have to buy expensive helmets like EFX Stormtrooper or settle for a much inferior cheap Rubies helmet that doesn't look that good. With 3D prints I could just buy or commission helmets in my local shops in my country for around 49 to 70 dollars. I'll just paint them and they look fantastic with good fitting.

Great video as always, but i'm surprised when you talked about cutting up larger prints you didn't mention LUBAN which will take whatever you have and chop it up based on the sizes you give it. Plus it will actually label and or number them for easier reassembly. Keep up the great vids.

This was an awesome video. I am literally trying to figure out what to use to put together a large print. Do i super glue, epoxy, welding with soldering iron or plastic welder or combo of each? it will be a large display print (about 6ft tall, 30 spools of filament) and dont want it fall apart after a couple years. There does not really seem to be just a single best way and i know everyone has their own success story but i dont want o mess up my first large print. Lots of good info here. Thank you

When I'm welding parts together I like to leave a brim on there if possible. You can melt down that excess material right into the seam

Hey Frank, quick question, at your point around 7:30 what benefit does the activator for the cyanoacrylate offer? Does it just assist in drying the glue faster or actually strengthen the bonds?

If you use meshmixer you can actually create a model of your body, its not perfect. But ive made 2 armor sets and theyve fit pretty good.

One thing I did to fuse a print was melting it together with a junk soldering iron and filling in the divot with some bondo

When you scale down a helmet that use 8x2 magnets and the hole are smaller at the end , what do you do to put the 8x2 again ? Heating up a magnet and shove it in is one way I tried but getting them out is a hell of a process and it can go wrong with many ways . Any recommendation how to do it ?

If you aren't adept at 3d modeling, I'd say use a dremmel to make the hole larger and then use a soldering iron with scrap material to secure and cover

Basically, if you work in the same room as the 3d printers it's impossible to keep dust off anything. For my printers I have a microfiber cloth at each one plus a small vacuum in the area.

Wuestion about scaling a full body suit. The whole thing is the same scale so if you just scale one part to fit you, can’t you then assume the rest will fit at the scale of the one part you tested with? Or do you find yourself having to custom scale the head differently than say the gloves or chest piece?

No technically it’s a software upgrade for your current printer. But i would definitely recommend a Bambu lab printer if you want a new printer

Foam - I saved the packing foam from by 3D printers. Hot glue will melt it though - wait for the hot glue to partially cool down before attaching.

Also i have a problem with a roll of plastic, where it was packaged incorrectly, so a piece of the thread longer in was over the rest of the later plastic, so it gets stuck, and the only solution seems to be to stay with the printer while it prints, or roll the entire roll out, and put it back on the roll
