Well, it’s coming up to Halloween so what better way to get your bass horror on than to try a little bit of Cannibal Corpse.
I’ve already covered a little of Hammer Smashed Face in a previous lesson and in the comments I got a bunch of requests for another beautiful love song in the shape of Frantic Disembowelment.
So today I’m going to take you through the first few riffs and give you some tips on getting them up to speed.

Great explanation of the theory behind the song. I feel like some people dismiss chromatic and non-scale type songs as noise but it is really about the power of the m2 and d5.

I wonder if it would be fine to play a single quarter note instead of the triplet hammer on. I know it wouldn't be the original bass part, but I think nobody would hear a difference. Need to try it tho

While im much more of a guitar player than ill ever be a bass player, the bass doesnt look too difficult compared to the guitar parts of this one. It does follow along with the guitars but the guitar riffs are far more complicated to play if you watch the studio video they did. I really need to get a bass someday, feel like it would help improve my flexibility on guitar if i learned bass without a pick.

I do RMIRMI etc. But sometimes I do RMIM and then a pit of a pause. But I also do RMIMI and then a bit of a pause. I don't use the pinky unless I am over the fretboard doing a bit of a flurry. In that case I do Index, Middle, Ring, and Pinky. Anyway that bass just growls! Imagine some distortion.

Great lesson. I'm pretty sure Alex follows the rhythm of the guitar and plays a gallop on the E string during the riff at 6:04, making it 3-3-4 instead of 3--4.

I was in a bunch of speed metals bands in the early 90s. I came from that background if you’d have seen my hair and appearance from 1990 through 1998 it’d all make sense. Ps. The key to making all this kind of stuff seem easy is the extra study outside of ‘metal’. Study jazz, Latin and classical music for many hours per day and you’ll very quickly move beyond any metal playing from a technical standpoint. It’s a very different world.

@@talkingbasslessons I would very much like to see and here something from that time :) I agree with you Just look at Cliff Burton and his knowledge about classical music. I dontthink Metallica would have gotten that far without Cliff. My goal this year is to learn Vivaldis Summer and Deantown by Vulfpeck. Great content by the way. Hav ea nice weekend :)
