Exactly the point, but if that gets around, Real Tree is out of business. I was bear hunting about 20+ yrs ago and sitting on the ground with my bow. I had a camo baseball cap turned backwards, red & black flannel shirt, jeans, and white tennis shoes. I had a 300+lb bear come with 3 ft of my spot where i sat. Arrow was nocked, bow resting on my shoe, all i had to do to shoot was lift the bow up and draw. Bear walked right up to me so close i had to pull the bow and arrow back so the broadhead didn't poke the bear in the chest, he was that close. 95% of me had NO CAMO except my hat. So i am not a huge believer in all that stuff. I am sure it helps , but not sure if it is necessary in my opinion.

It does but still.. That's a pretty big grizzly bear and they are super close. If you don't hit that bear in the head after it charges you, you're gonna get mauled to death. They are wild animals and they can take some serious trauma unless lethal force is applied. There's no dangerous animal than a wounded animal.

Well, I have studied Mr. Hill's public life for many years and whether or not people approve of his "public relations" methods, and weather you believe that he accomplished all that history has reported, we all have to realize that duplicating these hunts (which he really did accomplish) on film was a next-to-impossible task back then when movie cameras were big and bulky and the cameramen were not exactly hunters. Bringing them along for the hunt was a big obstacle to success as it was. We also need to bare in mind that Hill, Bear, Swinheart and others like them had bigger problems than getting these hunts on film; difficulties not withstanding. These men were working under enormous pressure from many members of the gun hunting fraternity who believed that serious hunting with a bow (especially on dangerous animals) was a pipe dream, a stunt; something you saw only in the movies. Remember too that if you are one of many who enjoy the sport of bowhunting, that it was only though the courage and determination of these bow-toting pioneers that the rest of us can walk into the woods with better than a prayer of bagging game with a bow. So, to the critics, I say: These early bowhunters were there. They took enormous risks. Give these guys a break. They've earned it. They deserve it.

Hanlon Razor , I beg to differ, tree hunting is done mostly in the midwest. and thats because, thats what works,, In Or. its spot n stalk same with say , Idaho, Nv. In his Field Notes Book he took a Grizzly in 1956 without backup. He spotted the bear as his pack train was riding and the guides just thought it was black bear which they didn't think dangerous or worthwhile but Fred and his partner Judd Grindell decided to try for it The guides let them go alone. It wasn't until Bear stalked close he realized it was a grizzly. He took the shot and luckily the bear went the other way. It was not a large bear as grizzlies go but it was still a Grizzly. This hunt was also filmed. Fred was only 20-25 yards away when he shot it. Fred did have a 44 Magnum in him but later said as close he was and how fast the ran away had it charged him he would not have able to shoot in time. Later on the same hunt Fred took a fine Mountain Goat

+Sonicguy95 Love to hear it-why was Shatner thrown out?
@Sonicguy958 жыл бұрын
sun Tao Shatner was a member of the Fred Bear Sports Club, he shot a black bear in Canada and wanted to track the bear in the dark, alone, with only his bow. Bear wasn't going to let him kill himself, Shatner probably started to argue, and so Bear threw him out. Another time at his home in Grayling, a newspaper writer interviewed Bear in his house the night before the bow season started. The guy had a huge cowboy hat on and it was dinner time at the home. The writer refused to take off the hat in the home so Bear threw him out. Bear was a really nice guy, but he had no time for jerks and fools.

Nate Clark these films were made In 1967 it wasn't until the mid to late seventies that carbon and aluminium were made.
@Sonicguy958 жыл бұрын
Aluminums have been around since the 30s. WWII derailed Easton's progress. They started to get attention in the 60s and were popular in the 70s and 80s. But most people choose wood or fiberglass because it was cheeper. The arrows in this video are probably glass, but the same creating was done later on some x7 aluminums too. The bow is a 65 Kodiak. So the filming could have been between 64 onward. I believe Bear shot a Lion in 56 or 57 and another in 67 with his prototype takedown.

It would be great if you included the dates of the footage when presenting these. Do you know when this was filmed?
@Sonicguy958 жыл бұрын
The bow is a 65 Kodiak. So he may have been using a prototype or early production run in 64. Could have been in 65. Or 66. I believe Fred painted the back of the bow white (can't remember if the belly was white too) for the polar bear hunt. You can see the arms on the quiver got paint on them. Before this bow he was using a 62 prototype. And after this bow he used a prototype takedown that can be seen in some of his african hunts. His lion was shot with it I think. After he realized the production costs were too high, he got the design of the takedown that we know of today. 68 patent, production started in 69. Bear used that bow till the end. Otherwise he shot some yew and osage bows early on. He used a few Grumley Deerslayers around the 40s. He used a 57 or 58 Kodiak on some of the British columbia and alaskan hunts. And he used either that 57 Kodiak or a 59 kodiak to shoot his record brown bear in 59. The photo doesn't show the bow very well. That pretty much sums it up.

Fred bear shot left handed, however I believe he was actually right handed, but had to switch due to target panic. A most feared ailment for any archer
@Sideshowbobx10 жыл бұрын
I doubt that somewhat, target panic can't be cured by switching your bow hand really. And old Fred used a bare bows with no sights too. With a modern compound with sights, the switch of your bow hand is rather easy, but not so with instinctive archery. So I rather assume that old Fred had a dominant left eye and the balls in his days to shoot left handed accordingly to that condition. The other option is that he tried to point the bow with his dominated hand as shooting a pistol, but that would hind the vision of his right eye again, which speaks against the theory.
@Sonicguy959 жыл бұрын
Bear is right handed and left eyed. He shot left handed with a bow because he couldn't grip the string with his right hand. Back as a a kid in Pennsylvania, Bear was on his grandparents farm: if I remember the setting is right. Anyway his older sister was threshing wheat, by hand. Fred always pulled the wheat out of the way so his sister would swing at air. One time, he was too slow and the blade got either his most distal joint on the middle finger of the right hand. I have read that in one or two books and have a primary source. My P&Y measurer was my state's first P&Y measurer, oldest B&C measurer (may have been the first: 1967, defiantly oldest living), and the first Bear dealer in my state, starting around 1960. Fred Bear came down bringing his brown bear to a state hunting showcase. The two men meet, and Fred even spent a few hours at his house. Fred told the same story to him. The measurer also said that all the stories of Bear being a gentle and humble man are very true.
@Sonicguy959 жыл бұрын
Sorry I meant Bear was right eyed. Got that mixed up because I'm right hand dominant, left eye, and shoot everything left handed. But instinctive shooting was a major advantage for him. Because both eyes are open while shooting: instinctive archers can shoot right and left handed bows. Bear was also a good competitive target archer in his early archery days.

Fred has rifle man protection; and he could NOT do alone tiger hunt let alone bear! I am going to type, "Fred tiger hunt with bow, {most likely India's Bangle tiger, NOT 700-800 Lb Siberian tiger!, see if shows up?"

I'm really supposed to believe a full grown elephant was taken down by one man with a bow? It took a group of cavemen to bring down a small wooly mammoth, which are probably around the size of a medium elephant

It dont matter if you hunt with a recurve longbow or compound your still a bowhunter.

2 year old comment..True, but it certainly is tougher with a recurve, longbow, or selfbow.
