I never understood why people purchase trucks who's bed is empty mostly. However, I believe it comes down enjoying that high seating, king of the road feel. For me, I've enjoyed sports cars, or sport sedans and a truck doesn't like taking corners too well. There is nothing more enjoyable then flying around corners while still being able to park downtown. The only way I'd buy a pickup was if it was for work or if they made one like a sports car.

In my humble opinion, pickup trucks are a waste of money for many people, and often serve as a subcultural status symbol. As a sixty six year-old man, I've learned many lessons about personal finance the hard way. My current car is a 2014 Honda Civic that I purchased four years ago for $12,000. (plus interest). When I bought it in 2017, it had 12,700 miles on it, and it was in excellent condition. It averages 30 mpg, and it took me two years and two months to pay it off (which of course is when I cancelled the collision coverage). My fuel & maintenance costs are very reasonable. So now I have no car payments, and my insurance costs me $47./month/$564./year (through USAA). This allows me to save & invest half of my paycheck (which translates to $30,000 per year, plus what I make on the investments). The FREEDOM that this gives me is far more precious than the ego gratification of having a vehicle that is larger, etc. than other people's vehicles. When I need a truck (perhaps twice per year), I rent one (which costs me a total of $80./year for the two rental days).
@freakfiveoh
@freakfiveoh 3 жыл бұрын
All fair points, and something most of us will probably learn the hard way. My truck was paid off, but now that I've sold it and I'm making payments on my Jeep, it's hard not to think about how I can better use the money. Cars are my hobby, but having a new car doesn't necessarily bring anymore happiness than an older one, at least not after the first few months.

I have only driven mostly big v8 vehicles. I will be honest with you, the nonsense about gas mileage is like preaching about god and I don’t believe in either. I have had little cars that have little gas tanks but they go through gas multiple times a week versus my truck, I only need to fill it once. That truck that he was showing us, usually has the v6 on steroids and I hear they do get thirsty. I don’t have a led foot, I avoid following people too close or town traffic which creates a lot of repetitive acceleration and slowing down. Behind the wheel, you can plan your routes and control your behavior behind the wheel so you get more control of how much fuel you use because choices people make dictate how much fuel you will use it’s just much easier for pride absorbed people to blame it on someone or something else

Use vans, more storage and can carry 14 adults comfortably, has a payload of 3000-5000 pounds, it can also tow 5000-6000 pounds, not as much as a truck but they come 4x4 and 2wd, it has over 10-13 feet of bed storage, has a taller roof so more space than a truck, gas mileage is better (depends if van is the longest or short, vans come in much handy, vans may be ugly but you buy vans for utility!

I've owned 2 sports vehicles and a luxury car but I love my big ole trucks. I also mostly work from home so I don't drive a lot and my man and I have several vehicles and a little Echo for errands. If it's going to be your ONLY vehicle and you need to drive often and far or you're not using it primarily for work, it makes no sense. I love my boy (named my Truck Rhodes/War Machine). He's a 2015 Tacoma with 92k miles AND he's manual. I've never seen a manual pickup and got this one for a decent price considering how ridiculous the car market is right now. Now I have my own manual vehicle to practice taking off from out of those DAMN inclines LOL. 😄

I live in a rural area of north east Minnesota. I have a half mile drive from the highway on a county road to my house, it is plowed promptly but, here we need four wheel drive in winter. I am a retired carpenter, but, sill haul things all the time for my home projects. The trick on mileage is how you drive, and, what you drive. I have a F150 with the xtra cab, it is four wheel drive and has the 5.0 Coyote engine. I get about 15mpg driving short runs, but, on a hundred mile drive, I get between 20-22 mpg. That is not too bad, and, considering safety, a larger vehicle makes sense. Ever hit a deer with a small car? And, I live in deer country. I have the XLT and it is a great vehicle for road trips, the long wheelbase and weight make for a ride that is more comfortable than many cars.

People should buy the cheapest and most economical vehicle they can find to get them around. If they need to haul something then just rent a truck or hire a friend. Then spend the thousands of dollars you save on lavish vacations in the mountains or abroad. I own a home and could really use a truck. I rather drive a Corolla and travel than sit at home with my sixty thousand dollar half ton twidling my thumbs. Love your video. These are all the exact reasons I don't own a truck anymore.

To each their own, I don't disagree, it's all up to the individual. I'd have a lot more money in general if I settled on a corolla early in life, but I enjoy my excessive cars. They can become a burden though. Then again, when I became a homeowner is when I found more and more use for a pickup truck.

Bought the boat first and then the truck. Nobody lets you rent a truck to launch in a saltwater marina. Used to use a SUV but the interior gets so nasty with bloody coolers and fish guts, and then newer and bigger boats needed more towing capacity than the SUV can do anyways. Don't understand why anyone would want one if they don't need it, people buying full size trucks with 3.2 or 3.3 gears that can only pull 6k lbs or whatever. Not nearly as comfortable to drive as the cars nor as fast.

I daily drive and use my 1991 Mazda b2200 quite often, take it up and down the coast for adventures, off road it quite often too, I need my truck for my farm, and still get 29 mpg. it's 5x more reliable than any 2024 toyota, and I do all major maintenance, its cheaper for me to own than any honda civic. And me being an avid car and motorcycle enthusiast, basically working on cars and bikes daily, in between going dirt biking and taking weekly visits to the junkyard, and having a small farm, my 1991 Mazda truck is honestly the best thing. My bed is never empty. And even with 2wd and street tire's I go many places most people with 4wd won't dare. River crossings, soft sand, mud, off road trails, hills, its a sight to see this thing make it across every time, lol.

I'm one of those truck owners who 98% of the time don't actually need a truck. However there is some weird peace of mind that if and when the other 2% occurs I have a vehicle capable of handling those tasks. Kind of like the argument of why pay extra for a 4x4 truck if you live somewhere you'll almost never need it. Over the past 8 years I've only had to engage 4wd twice but I was damn glad I had it those two times. I'm also lucky enough to have a job where I get a take home work vehicle so I don't have to use my own gas to get to and from work. I do agree with it being a pain when it comes to parking. I usually find myself parking further towards the back where there are less cars. Also getting groceries with already having kids im the back sucks. You get used to it after a while, I've owned 8 trucks within 8 years (I have a problem), two with full blown suspension lifts and mud tires, but that's a whole different pain right there. Anyways point being to anyone wanting a truck but hesitant because you may not need the capabilities of a truck all the time, just go and get one. It becomes a lifestyle and you get used to the inconveniences that come with daily driving a full sized truck in exchange for having capabilities that other types of vehicles don't have. Great video. All valid points to think about.

It still has some of the struggles you mentioned.. but the storage problems and rainproof problem is much smaller with the lightnings front trunk. I was looking at other electric vehicles mainly the Tesla Model Y to have a family friendly crossover… but like you showed.. the in-cabin space, especially for car seats and such, is HUGE in the back of the truck.

Now I drive a sedan, it's comfortable, quiet, great gas mileage, easy to get in and out of for me and my friends who are in our early seventies and less to repair. Also I default to the climate crisis and until we find out more, I can see where a car is a responsible choice. I've always owned a pickup truck. But no, I wouldn't buy one of the bulky 21st century pickups. And the newer they get, the bigger they became with front ends that look like you're standing in front of a semi. Of course if you stay with an older truck, you have to be prepared for mounting repair bills. That's the tradeoff to me. I'd rather drive something that.s better looking, even though I have to spend money on regular repairs, than what I call a pigmobile. And I know that my '97 GMC is appreciating in value at least as long as I can keep it looking respectable. It's only got a V6 with a standard tranny so it gets the best gas mileage possible, I believe, for a 1/2 ton. And never would I take a 4 wheel drive, living in the city. I did need the truck at one time when I was restoring my Model A Ford. Now that that's done, I still use the truck to go to automotive swap meets, sometimes to sell, since I'm still a collector of many automotive items, including spare parts for my truck. Yes, I did once pick up a good freebie dresser with my truck and once an old stereo record player. But if I had to go and rent a truck for good deals such as that, they would be long gone by the time I got back. As for interior storage, I'm not sure why anyone would do that. That just makes the truck look messy inside. Of course I'm not a family man, but even if I was I believe I'd say no to storing anything in it. You could even be adding to the weight and lowering your gas mileage by doing that. I do have a canopy for my truck and have never needed to carry anything taller than the canopy. If I do, I have camper jacks to take it off. I've always found enough room in my truck box, even being a 6 1/2 foot box for what I carry, especially if I'm just making a grocery run. Of course I make a lot more grocery runs than swap meet runs. Sometimes I'll even make grocery runs on my bike. But those times when I need the truck can make it all worthwhile when that box is empty. Yes, sometimes friends may need a favour and want you to carry something. But if you do a favour for them, maybe they can do a favour or two for you as well. A full size, long box truck is definitely too big for most parallel parking spots. But most guys who own such trucks don't live in places where you have to park in tight spaces.On the other hand, us city dweller types may also have a little pee pot for getting around in the city or even a bike or public transit, such as I use when I can. Not fun to drive? If you drive something from the '90s or older. I'll bet you'll have have fun seeing all the respect you get from truck guys, at least. Of course if it looks too nice, you may not even want to drive it in crappy weather.

I live in Texas and we had those back to back snow storms, and my wife and infant child, including myself, couldn’t go anywhere because our suv only had fwd and the one trip I tried to take it out to get gas because our generator was running out of fuel, I was sliding all over the road. If you’re living in the city and the truck is just a pavement pounder, sure you don’t need one, but I also think there’s a lot more utility and security in one than most suvs will give you let alone a mini van.
