The question was asked because at Walmart (and probably most department stores) they won't give you any of the inventory, stocking, or cashier jobs with a record, until you've worked for a period of time and proven trustworthy. He'd likely be a greeter, maybe parking lot cart dude, or hairnet food service if he's been there, short term. The judge was more asking to determine if he'd been employed for any period of time, or if he'd simply picked up the job a couple weeks before this hearing so nobody would raise an eyebrow and ask how he's maintained any standard of living without steady employment.
