Freddie & Mike Moran elicited the talents of Sir Tim Rice to write the lyrics for The Golden Boy andThe Fallen Priest. In an interview I watched, Rice stated that Freddie is “The Golden Boy” 👨🏻✨✨This is my favorite song off the Barcelona album. 💕

Variety, contrast, and surprise were always a big part of the music of Freddie and Queen. It is essential in their music. The Barcelona album is no exception.

Freddie and Mike gave "carte blanche" to Tim Rice, so he created theatrical and dramatic stories to the 2 songs. Freddie loved gospel, and the genre appeared in a few of his compositions.

This album was meant to be kind of a mash up between pop music and operatic music so guess they just went for different styles so it didn't all sound the same.

Actually I think her voice is in the gospel section. It’s hard to hear it here but in the live performance you can hear it better. Also I think it wasn’t about opera alone it was a mix of types of music that included opera, gospel , theatre. Caballe said she enjoyed the non opera parts of music because it gave her a certain freedom she didn’t have in opera.

Overall, I agree with your assessment, with one exception - I really like this track and it is among my faves on the album. Such a strange song but in a great way. I agree that Montserrat's vocal is out of place on a good part of the track...I think it would be better with her vocal removed. But what I love about this song and about this album is that it's a return to the Freddie and his muscial boundary pushing of the early Queen days....adventurous musically in a high quality way that we had really not heard since My Melancholy Blues or perhaps Crazy Little Thing. Besides the title track, he didn't care about commercial appeal....he wanted to make good, new music. Some songs hit the target better than others, but the point is he took the shot and did something no one had done before or since. I'd argue that there isn't a bad track on this album. Part of it I think is that he was in awe of Montserrat and that pushed him, and his diagnosis likely contributed to his approach, but I also think he had a chemistry with his co-writer Mike Moran. There is a song I love on Innuendo that is rarely mentioned that he co-wrote with Moran called All God's People....remove the synth and this song could easily have fit on Queen's debut album or Sheer Heart Attack.

WHY ? Why not ?? It’s a song … it’s a piece of art. You like it. You hate it It bores you You forget it immediately. I like it. It’s weird… like Bohemian Rhapsody which everyone is still asking What does it mean? What’s it about? Is it 3 songs or just one?? Most Queen fans think Freddie is the Golden Boy. That kind of makes sense but that’s another thing I feel doesn’t matter. Also… I don’t think the album was meant to be taken as a whole vibe kind of thing. I thought it was supposed to be just a bunch of songs written for Montsy and Freddie to blend their voice styles on. ( I’m probably wrong 😂 )

From what I have learned, Freddie really cared only that his songs were enjoyed. He claimed not to be influenced by what people might expect, which left him free to do what pleased him. However, I'm sure he cared about what Montserrat wanted and made sure she was comfortable with the music.

I dont think it was intended. But its kind of a flex on her. Freddie can do all of these different genres and can only sound like a opera singer. But I think the real reason was Freddie wanted to be Aretha Franklin and to sing with Montserrat.

The song if you read the lyrics has brought many people, including myself that it is about Mary and his long relationship with her. Why did he put the gospel in, IDK maybe because gospel is joyful and a explosion of emotion. Thanks for reacting to it a second time.

You got a Tim Rice stage production with this song. This is not my favorite from the album, but it is favored by many based on KZbin request videos. That aside, I really enjoy Freddie & Montserrat together even if this does not suit her voice.

Why did they include gospel? Hmmm quizás fue un guiño de Freddie a su gran diva Aretha Franklin. 🙄
