Great reaction! I could see how emotional it was for you, that's what good music does! This was written by Dave Clark for his musical Time. For the album of the musical he asked Freddie to sing this song and another one called In My Defense. The musical is about how humans are destroying the earth. This performance by Freddie is a tour de force performance. His vocal range, power and emotion are on another level. I don't know any other vocalist who could sing this the way he did. By the way these vocals are from the very first time he sang the song in the recording studio. The practice run. Dave Clark said Freddie was the only vocalist he had ever worked with who gave a complete performance every single time he sang this in the studio. Must have been amazing to be there.

There will never be another Freddie… he was just on a different plane. Many of Freddie’s later songs are incredibly insightful.. full of joy while having a deep, deep message. As you stated.. this was written by Dave Clark (from the Dave Clark Five group).. for a musical he was producing.. he re-released in the past couple of years.. it was originally done in the mid-80s. I hope you can continue your Queen/Freddie journey.. early stuff is amazing.. later stuff - even more amazing!! Great reaction.. glad you’re doing well in your new location too!

This song was written 40+ years ago. It was written by Dave Clark, John Christie, & Jeff Daniels. Dave Clark was one of Freddie's closest friends and was actually at his bedside when Freddie died. Dave Clark is an English musician, songwriter, record producer, and entrepreneur. He was the leader, drummer, and manager of the 1960s rock group, The Dave Clark Five (DC5). It was the first British Invasion band to follow the Beatles to the United States in 1964. In 2008 Clark and his band were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. "The Dave Clark 5 " was a band that was very popular during the early to mid 60'S. Dave Clark was the drummer and singer in the band. You should check out this video of him and Freddie talking about the song "Time",.and how it came to pass. "Time" was a play filled with a variety of artists contributing their gifts to the songs they did for the play. The interview is really fun, cuz Freddie is quite the expressive, excited darling that he is! I think you would learn a lot about Freddie in the interview. He knew what could be,...and how to do it...and he was kind! it's called "Freddie Mercury & Dave Clark 'Time' Interview (1986) - Extended" here on youtube. You just might also like to hear the Dave Clark 5' music...it's good,... this--> "Dave Clark Five Greatest Hits Video" just has some quick snippets of their music. Hope you take a look.

Thanks for a great reaction... Dick Clark (of the old Dick Clark Five genre) was producing and directing a musical on (off) Broadway and asked Freddie to sing a song... then asked him to do the musical on stage. There are several other versions of this song out there where he sings with the entire musical ensemble, but Freddie declined the starring because he thought that would be too boring to do the same show every night... Yes, I can see how anger (over Freddie being 'taken' from us) COULD play a part in this scenario, but I think the human (or should I say humane) thing to do is to acknowledge the anger, have gratitude for realizing it, then turn it around to love and acceptance. We all know Freddie was a great singer and master manipulator of emotions (he knew his craft well -- that's why we love him so much), so thank God for the TIME we had Freddie and learn to love everyone... enough said. Thanks again...Blessings.

I am with you.... I also just "discovered" Freddie this year, and I too am deep into watching the music videos and interviews. This man was the best voice of all time. By the time of this song, 1986, he suspected he was ill, and by 1987 learned he was dying; that makes his words all the more poignant , beautiful and sad. He died in 1991. But we today are lucky if we find him like we are. I dont even want to hear any other music at this point! I love your reaction. (i'm a white middle aged woman; my 'back against the wall' is medical issues and some poverty as a result). Great reaction/response video. To me the point of the way Freddie sings this song is, don't let them turn us against each other, we have problems to solve on this earth and in our society and if we use our energy hating each other, "there'll be no more future at all." We have to figure out how to trust one another again, that means earning one another's trust.

“In the back of my mind, I knew that the final version worked, and you can’t knock it because it is fabulous. I loved it when Freddie was on his own singing it. I’ve never felt that sort of goosebumps feeling that I got on that original run-through at Abbey Road [Studios] with just Freddie and piano,’” Clark said in the statement. But, the issue was, the song had been buried deep in his vaults for more than three decades. He couldn’t locate it. “Every few years I would say to my engineer, ‘Go down to Abbey Road and go through it all again at the vaults.’ We could never find the track At the end of 2017, we found it in the tape archives and I thought, Wow, it’s great.” Moran redid the piano and Clark was able to produce the performance he’d always wanted to hear again. Freddie’s bare vocals were placed on the new piano track. This version is Freddie at his most compelling.

I don’t think this song was written about Freddie’s AIDS diagnosis cuz, as others have said, he didn’t write it and I don’t think it was written about him. But it’s impossible to listen to it without thinking about the tragic nature of it with respect to Freddie’s eventual demise. But you are absolutely right about how it applies to what is going on today, everywhere you turn. Which is true of a lot of music that was written a decade …or two…or three…or four….before today. And that is certainly the case with a lot of Queen songs which deal with universal truths or the human condition. Thanks for doing this reaction!

Try one of my faves, WHITE QUEEN, at Odeon 1975 - that live version blows the recorded one away, as well as the other live versions - there's a GORgeous jam for 2/3 of the song between Freddie's piano and Brian's guitar that really "glows", it's unforgettable! Not written by Freddie of course you know by now. But, a truth for all. And Freddie lived to appreciate HIS life that was challenge from being quite young. Freddie, a youngster, was sent many miles away to boarding school for years. He was very near extended family but not his Mom, Dad and little sister. Lonesome, but he thrived. It's a good story cause Freddie, found it helped him be the independent, confident, constructive adult person we know. We should all use our time wisely .. . do what we want that is good and productive. I learned about Queen & Freddie almost 3 yrs ago....Freddie 'lives', inspires me today. His heart and soul is in his singing, no matter who wrote the lyrics. I cry cause he's gone. I smile cause he's still with us thru how he lived. Nice reaction.
