Freddie said "you've got to listen to this", holds up one finger, and 150 thousand people in an outdoor venue shush. He had this power right from the beginning. He could carry off an intimate song to a huge crowd and make each feel he was singing to them.

Yes many fans don’t get that….they always had it, especially Freddie.

But the problem was that they never went quiet. During the whole song, the audience were yelling at others to sit down and they became louder and louder. It got so loud that they had to mute the audience for the whole song.

It’s easy to forget that there is an audience. This performance is so intimate we almost feel like a voyeur. IA very brave performance.

This was Freddie's Nijinsky period. Mary had given him a book on his favourite ballet dancer Vaslav Nijinsky and he wore leotards on stage for the Night At the Opera, Day At The Races and News of the World tours. The white ones were pretty see-through. 🙈☺His aunt noticed how musical he was so he was allowed to take piano lessons at school. He got his Grade 4 before quitting because, apparently, he didn't want to play other people's music anymore, he wanted to play his own. Brian also has Grade 4 piano but said Freddie was a much better player. He had a natural rhythm that was like a metronome in his head. Love how Freddie quiets this huge crowd with one finger saying "you have to listen to this." Very brave of him because the song hadn't been released yet.

This song is so tender and so beautiful but there is also so much fear in the lyrics that perhaps he has fallen so deeply in love, and is frightened that things may not work out and he has no idea how he would ever recover. Freddie spent his life searching for love and so many times he was betrayed, he wondered if he ever would find his "one."

Loved Freddie's voice in the early 70's , more delicate than in his later years , this is beautifully sung and very brave , as you said , to play a new number on such a big occasion

Freddie stops and says ‘ you’ve got to listen to this one’ and they do ✌🏼😂 not a peep out of thousands of people !! Love young skinny rock n roll Freddie Love well muscled mustached Freddie and you’re right I think this song is rather dark and haunting. The album version is so beautiful with the band … love both versions. I love his piano playing too Freddie was so insecure but I believe all artists are.

❤Dear Freddie understood all too well that true Love 'is' obsession. If one is to Love, then one must Love with all of their heart...anything less is a waste of spirit.

This is my favorite performance of this song. Thanks, Rory. Freddie actually was classically trained on the piano. Perhaps you are confusing piano with guitar. He taught himself guitar but he took piano lessons for several years. They even have hand written letters of him talking about his piano lessons to his parents when he was a kid. I think Peter said he got up to level 4, which takes you through the basics and well into intermediate piano skills. At the level he quit lessons, he had the knowledge needed to play and just needed the practice to become proficient reading music and playing both chords and melody at the same time. I quit at about the same level because I wanted to play popular songs rather than classical. I'm guessing Freddie did too. It appears he had a clear agenda of what he wanted to do. I think he found it easier to accomplish what he wanted to do by singing the melody and playing the chords rather than trying to incorporate the melody into his playing like is typically done by pianists. Personally, I think he plays the way he does because he became more familiar with the chords on the guitar thus it was easier to transfer that skill to the piano rather than learning to read and play both the chords and the melody. His reasoning for his choice of playing style is, of course, pure speculation on my part. It worked out well for him because he could do more complex chords using both hands and advance his songwriting skills but I think the reason he didn't consider himself as an accomplished pianist is because he did not play the melody like was commonly done by more proficient pianists. He also had what would typically be considered poor hand positioning with his wrists leaning on the piano. That technique is frowned upon by the elites...but it worked for him so who cares?

Freddie seems vulnerable but determined to woo that special someone who was in attendance at the concert. That someone was David Minns, who Freddie fell in love with. But he could never show his feelings for David in public living in a time of intolerance of gay men. They broke up in 1976 after one of Minn’s suicide attempts & Freddie tired of being emotionally manipulated. Their relationship was described as a chaotic hot mess according to Minn’s book - This Was The Real Life.
