Clausewitz mentions this battle in his "The Defence" volume of 'On War', he says that if Daun had persued the Prussians beyond the Village after capturing it, they would have destroyed the remnants of Frederick's army, and could have quickly pushed North East and wiped Prussia off the map for the rest of History. He says that the Defence is in 2 parts, first the warding off the enemy's blow (which Daun achieved when Frederick exited the village) and secondly the action, which means a reactionary offensive/persuit, and these 2 things form One whole which cant be separated, removing one would mean the Defence is no longer a strategic victory but remains in the Tactical realm, and he also says in general about Persuits that they are the covalent bonds connecting Tactical victories to operational and strategic victories. So Daun is to be blamed for his timidity and over-caution just like Maria Theresa said, if he were more brave he would have ended Prussian History on this very day.

Love this series and your videos, my only complaint is I want more, more, and more! Truly this was not one of Frederick’s finest moments. But, as with all great leaders and generals, ultimately Frederick the Great was still only human at the end of the day. We can be arrogant, selfish, and avoidant, in the same way we can be humble, selfless, and heroic. Still one of the greatest commanders to have lived despite some of his flawed battlefield decisions.

With the few exeptions during the fight for independence. Fortunatly, unlike generals like Maradriaga, he was never defeated in battle, so he never switched the blame for the defeat to others All in, he is a pretty solid source

Here it is (from Tim Blanning, Frederick the Great, p. 291-292). So, after one Whole year, although thou seest me here again, Arbates- No more the fortune-favored Mithridates, Who in the balances of destiny Was weighed with Rome for the world’s mastery, Which long was doubtful. I have met defeat! Alert was Pompey, his success complete, In darkness which for courage left scant room. Our soldiers were half-clad amid night’s gloom, Their ranks ill formed, ill maintained everywhere, By their confusion making worse their fear, Turning their weapons ’gainst each other, cries Re-echoing from the rocks and from the skies- With all such horrors of a midnight fray, What good was valor? Panic held full sway. Some died, flight saved the rest, and I no doubt Owed my life solely in the general rout, To the report of my own death, which I Had spread.

If you study all of Fredericks campaigns objectively, he was at best was a mediocre strategist/tactician. His advantage was that, as king, he needed no higher commanders/superiors to approve plans. Bonaparte is rightfully acknowledged for his evolution of the flexible corps systems superiority over 18th century linear tactics. BUT Bonaparte had the same advantage that Frederick had. His opponents still had to obey orders from conservative hidebound reactionary royal favorites often 100+miles from the battle field. They were still mired in the 18th century mind set. Moreover they considered Bonaparte as "Corsican corporal". They sowed the seeds of their own disasters through missed placed ideas of royal hereditary superiority over meritocracy. As far as his ranking of Frederick, his hero worship ignored warts just as many historians have.

@@johnflesner8086 maybe because unlike you Flesner, it takes much to a battle, much less a campaign. Ever consider how Frederick managed to use interior lines effective, reimforcing one part of the front to another? Napoleons corps also moves fast, the they tend to live off land. The Prussians tend to take their supplies with then. How he masterfully conducted the campaign that only ONCE did Russia and Austria to combine their forces to defeat him? Ever notice that aside from the opening battles, he never has numerical superiority, going as twice or nearly 3x less troops than his opponents have? This campign reminds me so much of Napoleans defense of France in 1814. Only, Napoleon manage to do it for a few months. Frederick managed to do it for 7 years and won. By rights Prussia should have and was partition, and the should not have last for 7 years. A population and econmic resoyce of what? 2m? 3m? Vs France, Austria, and Russia, all the most powerful continental empires of 18th century? I dont see anybody belittling Alexander or Subudei just because most of the opposing generals were incompetent. Luck has always been a factor in the course of war. Frederick's superior generalship shines the more since has the inferior forces and inferior means of sustaining the wars. He c0nducted a campaign wherein the 3 greatest continental powers in Europe were unable to beat him before war weariness overtakes them. "His opponents were bad so he was lucky". What a pathetic mind. You dont survive 7 yeats of war by being lucky. And your excuse about command. The Austrian field commanders were left to their own devices to conduct the war as they see fits. The Austrian ruler was a female, while you have a weak ass king in France. There are very few monarch who conduct campaign personally. Napoleon was the last one to my mind.

@@ryanjuguilon213 Ryan, I suggest you follow up on Frederick's quote "I learned the art of war from Traun" after his disastrous Bohemian campaign. Frederick inherited his army from is father. The only improvement he made was that of the cavalry. He constantly misjudged the resolve of his opponents, was an unreliable, untrusted ally causing many of his own problems, his unrealistic distain of light troops, his poor use of light cavalry in reconnaissance, he expended the blood of his troops in ill advised frontal assaults due to his own intransient ego. Also research the necessity of the huge increase in his use of artillery due the losses in his infantry as the war dragged on. Poor statesmanship. Before you assign the sobriquet 'great' to Frederick, do research from more than one source.

Your sponsor is a scam. It doesn't own land, it doesn't grant any legal title and is organizes by serial scammers from Hong Kong. Just do some research...

Great video and I love your content but this new sponsor that sponsors all these history themed channels on youtube is repulsive bourgeoisie rubbish. Oh well the zeitgeist is what it is. After you get this series done, I, and I'm sure many others, would love to see content focusing on Northern Europe. There's very little history themed videos focusing on that region beyond WW2 and the K&G series about the Great Northern war. I haven't come by any good videos on wars like the Finnish war. Just an idea for what could be new fresh territory to cover for a channel such as yours.
