Hey Paul. Your videos have inspired me to pursue the craft of casting metal objects in sand. I've only been following for a few months, but I've watched them all. Well next weekend I'll be attempting cast aluminum bronze knives, having zero prior attempts (I still need to temper my graphite crucible). Even so, the information you have provided I feel confident that I'll do a half decent job of it. Based on this video I have crafted a spin trap and tapered sprue out of a dowl (I don't yet own a 3d printer). Thanks for the witty self deprecating humor.

In the metric world (or at least Japan) NAFCO or homes (their version of Lowes and Home Depot) sell it as 6.35 mm pipe, so same exact thing just different numbers.

totally agree on the surge traps. I'm seeing an immediate difference in porosity level in my castings. I'd share footage, but that would mean I would need to video it, upload it, share it... improve my channel... avoid the urge to us bright yellow Indiana Jones fonts, possibly change my account name to something relevant... too much work. I'll just sit here and agree with you.

I love your design, I'll definitely give it a go when I try this down the line. It occurred to me while watching your video... to save on having to clean it up after you take the 3d printed parts out..instead of burying the part a little ...couldn't you take a short, thin heated wire and shove it into the bottom flat part of you 3d printed part? that will let you stick the part into the sand like one of those ugly plastic flamingo things... no idea if that would work... I have never tried casting anything before, but your videos are definitely motivating me to try. looking forward to seeing the rest of your Gingery build

Pall, reduce your overall molding height, Keeping the whole thing as low as possible will give you even better casting results. Martin taught me this a long time ago, if you get your sprue & runner system sorted, you will find you do not need a tall sprue. Keep pushing the word out there dude

@PaulsGarage5 жыл бұрын
Yes indeed! Not sheet metal this time, I'm sand casting a part in aluminum
@sdspivey5 жыл бұрын
The spin trap will not move the sand to the outside, as the sand is less dense than the metal. Also, you should have made the spin trap junction the same size as the INSIDE of the pipe, then it wouldn't need to be "cleaned up" afterwards. It wouldn't shift either.

I'm missing something. Metal goes in, flows along the pipe to the spin trap then goes backwards to fil the item cavity? Sems it would fill the item cavity before proceeding to the spin trap.

Cool vids , Im going to be starting my Gingery lathe castings here soon. would this still work for larger castings or just increase the dia like you said.
@PaulsGarage5 жыл бұрын
I've done some castings where the part was a pretty large volume of metal and 1/4" tube still filled the part fine. You just need to keep the sprue full to the top and keep the metal moving. Increasing the diameter is sometimes a good idea as well
@markfryer98805 жыл бұрын
The 1/4 inch sprue system will accommodate anything that the home caster can pour from the readily available graphite crucibles. The main problem is shrinkage prevention by the use of risers and where to locate them to feed the cooling casting.

I think a casting video would be appropriate for next week. Maybe not the tailstock, because you haven't yet proven these new parts work correctly. So the question becomes, what should you use as a test casting? How about casting an aluminium sprue former and an aluminium spin trap? They'd be more durable than the 3D printed parts, although they wouldn't glow in the dark.

You can use a artist's large brush as a tapered sprue and small poly hose pipe for the runners. The various shapes are out there you just need to think laterally to find them.

8 inches in length, tapered to 1/4 inch match his 1/4 OF copper pipe gates.
@askquestionstrythings5 жыл бұрын
@@producersteve1330 What is the OD at the top? based on some rough bernoulli's principle calculations from the length you provided I assume it would need to be about 0.433 in (7/16in) and have a 0.7 degree taper
@producersteve13305 жыл бұрын
I'm sure if you follow his links Paul provided, the files likely contain all the measurements you are asking for. As far as my tapered sprue, I used an 7/8in wooden dowel cut to length of 8 inches tapered to 1/4 inch, and I just eyeballed it, mine is not a perfect transition since I'm working with hand tools and I don't even own caliper.
