Just discovered this today; very nice. I guess it showed up because I was searching for ideas on appliqué. Now I gotta try this - but I don't have one of those cool little machines you used to cut the cups out with. I guess I'll have to figure out how to freehand it.

Hi Deb, I am using regular all purpose thread by Coats and Clark. I set my stitch length to 0 when I am doing my free motion stitching. My feed dogs are dropped, so I do all the moving. Happy creating! Julia

What happens when we wash these? Do they fray like crazy
@stitchesbyjulia8 ай бұрын
This is raw edge appliqué so it will fray. Certain fabrics will fray more than others. I love using homespun shirting fabrics that fray like crazy adding wonderful texture. High end quilting cottons will fray less. It depends on the look you want.

Hi Julia, I'm so in love with all your free motion projects! I'm trying it out as I'm a beginner at sewing n my thread keeps jamming up in the bobbin area, do you keep your machine at a certain tension for free motion?
@stitchesbyjulia4 жыл бұрын
Hi, I'm so excited that you are trying free motion. Here are the steps I take: Disengage the feed dogs, (mine has a lever to lower them) , use your free motion foot, lower your foot, set the length to 0. I do not adjust the tension. When you foot is lowered, it show barely touch your fabric. You should be able to move your fabric freely. The thing that takes the most practice is the movement. Keep it moving, you'll get the hand/ eye coordination with practice. I hope this helps. Julia
@luv2skrap4 жыл бұрын
@@stitchesbyjulia thank you so much for the response, I moved to a different machine n it went sooo much better on that one, it's hard but I'll keep practicing! Your videos inspire me to keep trying so keep those videos coming 😁.

So if I'm making a table topper and I have the word "eat" to applique in raw edge I make my quilt sandwich first right? And then I free motion stitch around it right? Thanking you in advance for your time and for this video
@stitchesbyjulia5 жыл бұрын
Hi, I make a sandwich of the top layer and the quilt batting layer, then do my appliqué. I do not appliqué with the backing on. I add the backing after the free motion work and then the binding. Hope this helps. Sounds like a cute project! JULIA

Julia, what is the name of the pastel permanent markers you are using and also the black permanent writing pen you are using?
@stitchesbyjulia5 жыл бұрын
Hi Karen, I use the Faber-Castell pitt pen markers.amzn.to/2VRDZ7S They are water proof and permanent and don't bleed into the fibers. They are not opaque but you can layer the color to get it darker. I do not use them on dark fabric unless I lay down acrylic paint first. The black permanent pens I use are also from Faber-Castell. They come in a pack of 4 with different width tips. amzn.to/2UzHm2W. Hope this helps, thanks for watching! Julia

I have never made an investment in a die or machine with do my mixed media. I have done fussy cut and detail work with scalpel knife. Don’t know how this will work with fabric. Do you like your big shot? Have you used any other machine? I don’t have funds with current life situations, but maybe I can find one used. I want to avoid an investment in anything that is not functional with fabric, even if I can find one cheap.
@stitchesbyjulia6 жыл бұрын
Hi Monica, I love my BigShot and use it daily for fabric. Mine is around 8 years old and is still going strong. I have used a Silhouette Cameo but I find it is a pain for fabric (probably because I don't take the time to learn it LOL) The BigShot is so easy and I can cut 4 layers of fabric at a time. I bought mine at Joann's when I could use a 40% off coupon. I get all my dies from Sizzix-they run big sales throughout the year. I use to fussy cut all my appliqué design but started having hand and arm pains. The BigShot has really helped.
