Dan Hartman was INCREDIBLE. He had such an amazing and varied career before his sad and tragic death. It's hard to believe sometimes that funk rocker guitarist who wrote and sang Free Ride also wrote disco hits and even the soft rock anthem "I can dream about you." Dude was amazing and died way, way too young.

Yeah, my biggest memory of Dan Hartman was Instant Replay as a teenager in the 70s. I was an out and out Rocker, and that particular disco song turned me right off. There were other artists in the 70s who are best known for pop hits that do not represent their background. Another example is Elvin Bishop with Fooled around and fell in love. Not a bad song, but not one to make a blues boogie fan searching his back catalogue.

A lot of people don't realize it, but we re-recorded "Free Ride" with Jerry and the band, and Jerry actually wrote the solo that you hear on all of the TV commercials where they use that as the background music. That solo that Rick Derringer plays on that was written by Jerry. @777stroke I watched the Edgar Winter Group perform on Don Kirshner's Rock Concert at around this same time, 1973. I watched in awe when Montrose and Hartman switched instruments. Dan Hartman played this mind boggling guitar solo that was very Hendrixesque! I remember my best bud and I were blown away. I've tried before to find that performance on YT, but have not located it (if anyone out there can find it, enjoy Dan's guitar prowess and let me know). Dan Hartman was a mega-talented multi-instrumentalist! It saddened me when he went disco just a few years later.

It's all subjective. Most everyone thinks the music they grew up with was the best and everything that came after is garbage. Every generation does this. I think we just attach the happy memories of youth to the music we grew up listening to. I don't see why people don't just enjoy the music and keep listening to what they like without taking a big dump over all other music because it's not what they like. There was great music in the 70s, and there is great music today. You might not like it but that doesn't mean millions of other people don't like it either. I feel like this subject has begun to trigger me, obviously.
@Dan-zq5wt Жыл бұрын
@@joshleenall please by all means make some recommendations. I don’t think your argument holds in most of the Top 40. At least in previous generations, whether my dad’s or grandad’s era, people played real instruments with real complexity (whether you liked big band, doo wop, Chuck Berry, Beach Boys, Beatles, Hendrix and Cream, Zep and Sabbath, the Dead, Boston, VH etc etc). Point is, all this music and so much more depended on real musicianship, composition, virtuosity, etc no matter the era. Don’t really hear that as much at least on radio. Even just a few years ago you’d hear musical pop bands like No Doubt and Paramore. Not too much of that going on now. I dunno
@joshleenall Жыл бұрын
@@Dan-zq5wt If you're judging all music today by what you hear on your local radio stations, you're being really short sighted. There's an entire world of music out there that you don't hear on the radio made by incredibly talented musicians. Again, it's all subjective. Think about how much you love the music you grew up with in the 70s... there are TONS of people today that feel the exact same way about what they listen to today. It's cool if you don't like it, I don't like a lot of it either, but that doesn't mean it is subjectively bad. Music changes and evolves based on what people enjoy listening to. I don't understand why so many people want to argue this. Music is subjective, period.

@@jamesmack3314I’m assuming you’re referring to Dan Hartman? Dan Hartman died of AIDS in 1994 at the age of just 43. Dan was gay, but never publicly came out during his lifetime (although several musician friends of his, including Frankie Goes to Hollywood frontman Holly Johnson, were aware of his sexual orientation). His sexual orientation and HIV status didn’t become public knowledge until after his death. Kind of understandable, considering that up until around the early to mid-1990s HIV/AIDS was pretty heavily associated with gay men, although several notable cases of the disease amongst those not part of the LGBTQ community did help to reduce that stigma: Arthur Ashe, Elizabeth Glaser (wife of “Starsky and Hutch” star Paul Michael Glaser), Eazy-E, and Magic Johnson. (Of those I just named, only Magic Johnson is still alive, and his continued presence and activism show how far HIV treatments and awareness have come since the 1980s and 1990s. Elizabeth Glaser, who contracted HIV via a blood transfusion she received while giving birth to her first child with Paul Michael Glaser, became an AIDS activist and was the one who encouraged Johnson to go public about his HIV status.)

Unbelievably awesome!!! What a great performance. Thank you for posting this. Rick Derringer filling in on bass so Dan Hartman could play that iconic guitar part. That band with Ronnie, Jerry or Rick on guitar was ON FIRE! What a band!

The 70's had so much more use of the cowbell - and it was pretty awesome. Hope it makes a comeback 😅

SNL skits, aside, I agree: more cowbell. I like the fact that "multi-instrumentalist" Edgar just bangs on the cowbell in the last verse. My vote for best use of cowbell in the 70s goes to Grand Funk's "We're an American Band."

Always a jumping Track. That's gotta add years to Edgar Winter's & Rick Derringer's Lives! Next, I'll be visiting 'Hang On, Sloopy' (what a Stunner) & 'Frankenstein' (the Great American Couple)!

THATS THAT REAL STUFF. DAMN.... NO ROOM FOR SAMPLING THERE. ALL PURE TALENT & ABILITY. THAT'S LIVING THE REAL DREAM WHEN IT COMES TO PLAYING & PERFOMING MUSIC. DERRINGER EVEN TAKES THE BASS GUITAR, THIS IS BACK WHEN GENUINE MUSICIANS CARED MORE ABOUT THE MUSIC THAN A SHINING MOMENT FOR THEMSELVES.

Edgar Winter on keys (also sax & percussion); Rick Derringer on bass here (normally guitar); Dan Hartman on guitar & vocal here (normally bass); Chuck Ruff on drums; Jerry Weems on guitar. Jerry took over after Montrose left. Edgar & Rick still with us in Oct 2023, but the other four are sadly gone.

Moments in life. Went on holiday with my family and family friends when this was out . Newquay in Cornwall. Hot summers day family and friends went to beach I sought out the record shop and bought this I was 16 . I don't have the 45 now but have the memories. Tunes like this started this English boy on his life journey listening to music.
