The whole FS problem could be easily put to bed if the universities had a clause in their enrolment agreement (and staff hiring contracts) which said: This university is a place where ideas are freely exchanged in the process of challenging existing ideas and creating new knowledge: as a result you might at times feel uncomfortable with views being expressed - signed. End of problem.

The proposed restriction of academic freedom to areas of "academic expertise" is a pernicious idea. First, it proposes a narrowing of freedom in order to protect that bit, and circumscribe the rest. Second, it brings in arguments over expertise, legitimacy, and speaking rights per "expertise". Guess where this goes when matauranga maori is being debated? The "expertise" becomes ancestry and mystical transmission of knowledge, and others - engineers, biologists, astrophysicists, sociologists god help us, philosophers of science or knowledge are not allowed to comment. Because it's not their area of expertise. For every one of these restrictions it pays to think "how would a bad faith actor exploit this?" and then take it 3 further steps down the analysis.
