Your reveal of the 6K All-I feature on the camera just blew my mind...the image is SO sharp and extremely clear using Cine-D, even in low-light, runs circles around V-Log in the dark. Game changer on how I've been shooting recently. No words to say it other than you deserve more views. Keep up the fantastic work. Truly....Thank You!!!

Hi Myles, Yes, definitely Panasonic's official Vlog to rec 709 conversion LUT is too magenta on the skin tones. I deal with it using 3D LUT creator. Lowering the red on the channel window and tweaking the dynamic range on the A/B window. I can send you a LUT for the G9 and the GH5s if you wish. I would like to hear your opinion.

Some advice for viewers (and perhaps it's obvious): you should film V-Log with 10-bit not 8-bit recording modes. I found that with 8-bit recordings using this LUT I was getting a decent amount of color artifacts. At least I assume this is an 8-bit issue and not an issue with the LUT. It makes sense, too. V-Log is so flat that it needs those full 10-bits to be post-processed as much as is necessary to get a good look. Can you confirm this Myles? And thanks for your hard work on this video and the GH5 luts!
@ShotByMyles2 жыл бұрын
Absolutely, thanks for mentioning! I always recommend shooting 10 bit where possible, and if that’s not possible I would avoid VLog entirely :) That’s where I use either Natural or Cine-D. I’d be interested to hear if you see the same issues with Panasonic’s LUT, I definitely saw some in 8 bit VLog, especially on skin and in shadows
@InLightVFX2 жыл бұрын
@@ShotByMyles Ok, thanks for confirming! I just checked the official Panasonic LUT and yes, I was am seeing the same artifact issues. And yes, I too notice it first in skin tones, reds, and shadows. 10-bit it is! In all your GH5 experience you wouldn't happen to know the best way to prepare v-log footage for vfx? For vfx we always convert footage to a linear, "scene referred" gamma before doing vfx. So a LUT that would do this might be named something like "V-Log > Linear" ... it's a confusing rabbit hole of color management unique to vfx. Just asking in case you have any ideas for a solution. Right now I'm thinking LUTCalc might be my best bet but I'm not sure how much I can trust the gh5 vlog luts created there.

Hey Myles. Hope you're well? I bought your course and working my way through the modules-awesome content btw. I just wanted to see what your thoughts were on the gh5 to gh5s upgrade? I have been thinking about switching to one for a while as I mostly shoot lowlight content. Previously I have been shooting at 1600iso with the gh5/18-35 combo, but still get a lot of noise. I know your training video says to try and not go beyond 800iso for lowlight, which I will experiment with beforehand. However, the gh5s dual native iso seems to suit my needs. I have a basic rig and an old zhiyun crane v2, so lack of IBIS doesn't worry me too much. So just to summarise, is the gh5s switch worth it, or just stick with the gh5 and figure out a lighting solution🤷🏽♂️. Thanks a lot for any input.
@ShotByMyles5 жыл бұрын
Hi Tim, for me it would come down to your budget and whether you’re able to light these scenes or not. If you’re trying to save money then obviously it’s a tougher decision, and I’d consider how much of an impact the noise is having on the work. Are clients / viewers noticing the noise? Have you tried noise reduction? If your output is KZbin or Facebook, does the compression there take care of it or is it still an issue? If you absolutely need cleaner footage then it makes sense to look at the GH5S especially with the stabilisation gear you have. I’d just say that people have reported a noise issue in VFR mode on the GH5S that isn’t apparent on the GH5, so if you use VFR a lot you might still have an issue. I didn’t test that before I returned my GH5S. If you haven’t already got lights and you think they could help, I’d strongly consider starting there. Good lighting of a scene is more important than the camera, and if you’re shooting in the dark then even if there’s no noise you might see improvements with lighting, adding more contrast, character and making the colours pop. It also feels like a GH6 might be around the corner so I’d be thinking extra hard before upgrading at the moment! In the meantime 1600 ISO is fine, even 3200 if you’re able to do noise reduction. There’s a big hit in dynamic range at that point, but that’s less of an issue in low light :)
@officialtimcruz30775 жыл бұрын
@@ShotByMyles Thanks a lot for the quick and informative response mate :) I don't really get the budget to light the scenes, as the majority of my clients want low budget shoots. So currently I only have an aputure m9 key light that I use for run and gun and to light most of my scenes. It works at times, but its not always ideal. All of my content so far has just been for youtube/facebook so the compression helps slightly, but I'm my own worst critic and do notice the noise although my clients don't lol. If you have a minute to check out my most recent upload, the noise is pretty bad imo...and I didn't go past 1600 iso? I don't have noise reduction to the max, but I guess its something I could try. I also thought about maybe buying neat video? I read the rumors about the GH6, so again that's food for thought really, as it could be a bad time to upgrade. I'm going to head out to shoot later in the week, with some of the settings and techniques you suggested in the training vids....fingers crossed they work for me :)
@officialtimcruz30775 жыл бұрын
@@ShotByMyles Thanks for the kind words. Really appreciate it. The skin tones look ok imo, but as you said the noise in the sky and other places were really bad. However as you said, maybe I just need to look more into improving my exposure techniques and colour correction :). Agreed, on Neat video being demanding. I work in proxy media on a mac, so unsure as to how much NV would slow my work flow down. All valid points Myles. Buying a new camera as opposed to improving my technique is an expensive fix really....well at least until I see what the GH6 brings to That would be great if I could send you a small clip? I try and get it over to you in the next few days. Thanks once again for taking the time out to share your experience and expertise on this. Much appreciated!

Wow, I have recently discovered your page, and you have SO much amazing information. I am new to the GH5 world, and I'm in love. Your channel has been a beautiful compliment to it, and I will be joining your course as well! I am grateful that you've put in so much work to share this incredible information. I've been curious.. It seems that I've narrowed down that Natural, CineD, and Vlog seem to be the best options for video. I am curious as to what you might suggest as far as when to use what, and what the benefits of one or the other may be. My understanding is that Natural is a great baked in look that's ready to go. CineD is a good Natural/Vlog in-between having a bit more "flexibility. And Vlog being able to take advantage of a wider dynamic range, yet more vulnerable to noise, and not recommended for night time shooting. What do you find yourself using the most? I really coloring, but I'm kind of a slap on a LUT, and adjust exposure/contrast/saturation to taste kind of guy. Therefore, the Emotive Color is likely a bit more work than I want to do. I am looking forward to trying out the Luts you created. Any insights would be so helpful. Thank you!
@ShotByMyles4 жыл бұрын
Thanks a lot! I think you've nailed it on the benefits of those profiles, and I only use Natural, Cine-D or v-log personally. I use Natural for quick turnaround jobs including some corporate work where I don't think the viewer will notice the reduced dynamic range. I use Cine-D for more creative shoots where I want slightly more dynamic range and will grade the footage including for all my slow motion and low light stuff. Then I'll use v-log if I'm shooting a really high dynamic range scene (sometimes real estate) and I want to hold on to as much range as possible, and I'll only shoot 10 bit in that case. Hope that helps!

Thanks, that was interesting and I'll give your LUT a try, including the display LUT is a very nice touch.. BTW have you compared with with other free ones such as Logarist (usually involves two LUTS): www.logarist.com/ Or the main (??) paid ones of Leeming and EmotiveColor? (Ah, scratch the latter, I see you have a video...) Plus there's also the non-LUT approach of using the Open FX Colour Space Converter in Resolve?
@ShotByMyles4 жыл бұрын
Hi Jon, I've only compared the ones shown in this video (Tom Antos, Joo Works, official Panasonic one) plus I've explored Emotive Color as you mention. I know in Resolve people might defer to the ACES workflow which is fair enough but I only look at the CineD version of Leeming, which is also in a separate video. I've never heard of Logarist but to be honest I think I'm personally done testing free ones now that I've made my own and have so many options already!
