The Yungas Valley in Bolivia: a unique landscape, where the Andes Mountains meet the Amazon Rain Forest. In this remote section of one of the poorest countries in South America, children have a very long and incredible dangerous walk to school ahead of them. All for one goal: education - for a better life.
Seven-year-old Elmer wants to become an engineer and to build his own house, far away from the remote village. But his only way to school leads over a ravine more than 650 feet deep and about 1000 feet long: a kind of homemade zip-line. He has to entrust his live on a rusty iron pulley and a worn plastic bag.
On the other side of the valley, on the summit of the mountain range, is where the sisters Helen and Mariela live. Isolated, and in the heart of the jungle. Of all the children who attend the school, the sisters live furthest away. Fear, hunger, and exhaustion are their constant companions. For them, education the key to a new, better world. And that’s why they run great risks every day in pursuit of it.
All this is more than just a walk to school - It is a test in the vast jungle. Throughout this journey they all have only one goal in mind: to ultimately find a job in a city and lead a better life.

I am from north borneo of Malaysia. I went through exactly same journey like Helen and Mariella do. Even worse, our home was made of bamboo, no running water, no electricity, barely got even salt for cooking. I and my siblings had no no school bag.. Even getting a plastic bag was hard because my parents had no money to go to city/town to buy stuffs that could make them able to provide us plastic bag for books. So sometimes we had to make sure we use plastic bag as much as we could... For our book. We had no shoes, no slipper. We walked bare foots, passing through thick forest, crossing a big river which has no even a bridge. When rain, all books get wet, we only depended on any wide leaves I could find to use as umbrella like banana leaves or stay under shade of big tree. Many times we arrived at school with wet uniform. Lunch time was not given all years. We ate anything we could find in jungle. We left home at 5:30 am walking all the way down, arrived home at 5-6pm from Monday to Friday. Coming back home was way harder as it was uphill. Got bitten by leeches, mosquitoes. Now I myself is a teacher at an international school. Because of hard life, I know exactly how hard their life is... Most of time hard life and experience makes people more humble and kind.

@@bardo0007 Indeed. Then during high school most of time I only had less than 1 dollar for whole month living at hostel which was hundreds miles away from home for five consecutive years. I survived the hard life. Now I am living in the city. More than 20 years has passed, I still missing life at village. But since I now working in city, flying back to my hometown is not easy.

Cierto, yo no vivo ayi, yo era uno de los pimeros naceron en los estados "unidos" en mi familia, quando yo fui a El Salvador cuando era 8, era como este video pero con playas, cuando regrese a los estados "unidos" mi mente cambio, yo vi los ninos en otro paises no tenian mucho, pero tolevia ellos estaban feliz, con valor, y tolevia quieran mas de la mundo. Los ninos aqui, si no tienen todo, pero ellos tienen que aprender como vivir con poco, por que en este pais, es normal para perseguir solo las cosas. @@nfvy8111 Many young children wouldn't be able to stay such an extended period of time away from their parents. Once they turn 5, many start to help out with household chores, gardening, laundry, cooking, and cleaning. It's basic at first, but sadly their help is needed due to the strained and poor income of their families. They learn young, and it makes the parents lives a bit easier, but the children don't get an education as a result. It's sad, but young children working at home are remnants of when school was not compulsory, and many families lived on isolated farms with no education readily available to them. Boliva is working on laws to better the education of young children and try to keep them in school. There are charities online if you search for South American school and wellness charities. If you want to help further, I suggest getting a degree in teaching and move to these countries where the government will find your stay to teach them.

While im sure the thought of "This is a long way to go just for school" has probably passed their minds before. I would gamble most dont actually think much of it. If you've never known anything other then that lifestyle, alot of them probably feel lucky to be able to adventure everyday on the way to school. It reminds me of a time i went to a friends house in the rural countryside. We walked an hour and half if not more both ways, just to see visit some girl for an hour or so. I remember even complaining on the way back about how its so far, and commenting "how can you do this all the time" and he just shrugged and said, "I dunno, you get used to it" People adapt pretty easily.

I Watched the video with a lot of nostalgia. I walked bare foot 22 k.m. (up~dn) to my school for 3 years. These kids struggled 5 times more than I did. I had tears in my eyes as I watched the video. Desire to learn and spirit of perseverance moved them daily. God bless them.

I live in Argentina, and we have a lot of Bolivian immigrants living here.They are the nicest, kindest, most hardworking people I've ever met. They are the ones who do the jobs no one else wants (agricultural jobs, mostly), bust ass, work all day under a blazing hot son and are super grateful for it. When the meek inherit the Earth, Bolivians will be royality.

I live in Bolivia & me & some volunteers tried to buy shoes, asked for signatures for the government to help build safer routs for kids to go to school but the government doesn’t listen... there are many more kids in many more small towns in the jungle that have the same or more dangerous routes, it’s simply not posible to build routes for every child... it’s really sad, as a Bolivian I feel powerless to help my own people

I know of a genuine organisation who help these children. I visited them 5 years ago. A not for profit organisation that has done tons to help children in these circumstances. The organisation I refer to is called Amistad Sagrada, and is based in the Andes mountains in Peru. The guy that runs the organisation is called Sanan. He lives in poverty conditions himself. I know. I have seen it. He has a presence on the internet. Check him out. Say I sent you because he is extremely protective of the children. I’m from Bolivia , this is true some kids here live this style of life , it’s not a big amount , but still being heartbreaking . Some of these kids when they reach 18 , they go to the city , try to find a job and give a better life to their parents, one thing that I need to clarify it’s sadly but true, “coca” it’s certainly use for medicine and rituals , but is also send to the government and they sell it to others countries, one proof of that , is in another department of Bolivia called Santa Cruz ( Santa Cruz is the biggest department ) most of the crops are send here and there’s an airport that is not allowed to enter , there’s said that “its military “ but there are a lot of proofs that they send the “coca “ as drugs. Back to the main subject of this documentary, thanks a lot for making it , this makes me so emotional, I have not had this style of life (at all )living in Bolivia , but this makes feel thankful of having everything in my life 😊. Pd: sorry , if my English is not good , I haven’t practice in a while 😅

My heart practically leapt out of my chest at what this children faced everyday on their own, facing life and death situations seemingly without any fear. AND THEY WERE SO YOUNG! Their just babies. When that one little guy tried carrying the younger boy on his back which caused both both to topple or when the older boy tied a rope around the little guy to zip line so high... my heart just sank. Bless them. This makes so ashamed of our children in this country who take everything for granted and have absolutely no respect for others.

The natural beauty of South America reminds me of the African continent. Stunning landscapes . But my goodness the weak zip line made me panic on his behalf. That's just so scary and as a grown adult I can't imagine taking such a risk let alone a young child. These children are unbelievably brave. We watched this video for a school assignment. I have always known that there are people who love to have knowledge so much that they are willing to go through many dangers along the way just to have knowledge. And they are as sincere as possible with this. And what ambitions these children have. And I think we are glad that there is such an opportunity. In big cities, where there are more opportunities and more conveniences, it is easier for children to get an education, perhaps some perceive it as a given, as a routine, a duty and may reluctantly go to school, not understanding how lucky they are, and how children who walk on dangerous roads to school would be sincerely grateful for such a privilege, like modern children from big cities. But after all, those children who have done a lot of hard work to be able to have knowledge enter universities. That's such a difficult childhood. And how strong they will grow.

Lamentablemente en los lugares alejados es así en mi país Bolivia, yo estudie toda la primaria caminando 1 hora de bajada a la escuela y 1 hora y media de vuelta casa por que era de subida a casa, y lo más grave es que solo había primaria si querías terminar secundaria, tendrías que ir a la ciudad... o buscar un pueblo donde tenían secundaria ...... afortunadamente ahora casi en todos los lugares alejados hay secundaria e inclusive carreras técnicas ... pero la mayor dificultad sigue siendo los caminos.
