You might best know Rob 'Beatdown' Brown from his popular KZbin channel, but after you watch this hour-long lesson you'll also know him for his incredible sense of pocket and groove.
Rob emphasizes that "no one will yell at you for sitting in the pocket," and that overplaying isn't necessary. Most drummers get hired to play pocket, and for their sharp decision-making skills: knowing what to play and where to play it.
In this lesson, you'll learn that drum parts don't need to be flashy to work, and how to get into the right headspace before practicing your pocket. That's why Rob is confident that this is something you can improve 'overnight': it's a conceptual exercise that'll help you immediately change the way you think about drumming.
Once you find your rhythmic foundation, you'll learn how to practice playing in the pocket, how to use the click in a few different ways, and why you should play 'from the ground up' by focusing on your feet first.
After this lesson, you'll know why the hi-hat is such a powerful tool for creating grooves and why internalizing subdivision is so important.
Lesson Outline:
0:00 - SONG: "Broadway Hustle" by Rob Brown (from the playalong album "Beatdown's Pocket Builders")
4:40 - Introduction
8:55 - Finding the rhythmic foundation
19:41 - How to practice the pocket
26:29 - Playing from the foot
30:35 - Using the click to improve feel
41:40 - Biggest takeaways
46:40 - SONG: "Take Six" by Rob Brown (from the playalong album "Beatdown's Pocket Builders")

This is so true, what a great reminder. And it goes perfectly with the current MD issue where Steve Jordan reminds us that players like Fred Below "weren't afraid to play simply, and they didn't worry about somebody saying 'Anybody can play that.'" Dave Mattacks, when asked to play a fill said, "Do I have to?" It wasn't that he couldn't, it's that he knew the groove was the most important part of the gig. I grew up playing Jazz and that was a hard lesson to learn. Being in Blues bands cured me.

@davidgomersall7185
@davidgomersall7185 3 жыл бұрын
@@Minikin24 I'd say that's kind of missing the point of his videos. For the most part they are practical lessons in improving your groove, feel and rudimentary skills. Another way of looking at it, it's cool and all, watching Marco Minneman play a different time with each limb, but to enthusiastic amateurs like myself who want some practical tips on becoming better musicians, Rob Browns' stuff is gold. That's why the dude gets so much love, that and the fact he makes it accessible by not flinging a tonne of chops in your face
@musicmusic6595
@musicmusic6595 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah we need to go back to the basics of drumming, far too much emphasis on chops and people seeing great drummers on youtube following in that influence. Being a great studio musician is where it is at and learning how to not only hold groves but develop your own phrasing and feels is incredible important fundamentals. You listen to guys like morello and rich in their recordings and they can do it just as well in the studio as they do live, same for guys like cobham, vinnie c etc.
@riverfilms4548
@riverfilms4548 3 жыл бұрын
@@davidgomersall7185 The thing is Marco Minneman is a great drummer, who has practised these basics long ago, now he puts that time signature thing on top of the "pocket layer". But you have to be able to play in the pocket to make difficult time signatures and grooves sound tasty. Thats the problem I guess.

Rob gave me the confidence to actually go out and play in a jam for the first time. Not gonna say it was good.....but it didn't suck. And I'll take that. Thank you for all the great lessons.

Been following Rob BROWN'S channel for more than a year. Great guy, goes straight to the point. Be a musician, not just a drummer, learn how to groove and play with the music. Thumbs up to BEATDOWN BROWN !

This man always articulates my thoughts/approach to drums/song writing far better than I ever can. Forever groove and pocket > chops/flash. (Mad respect to the chop/flare folks cause it is entertainment)

hell yeah. Isn't it just the worst though, to be sitting behind another car at a traffic light that also has the turn signal on, and your signals sync for a while, only to eventually slowly drift apart? As a drummer, it feels horrible everytime :D

Street drummers have been doing this for years - showmanship is usually needed for tips. It's not the same as bands or session work. It simply has moved over to social media - everyone's a street drummer on the internet.

A beautiful lesson with some great takeaways! I've been encouraging my students to prioritize the groove as their foundation in my samba percussion teaching for years. Many thanks to Rob Brown and to Drumeo for the inspiration! (Philip Galinsky, Director of Samba New York!)

Been playing drums for 3 months now. Have wanted to play my entire life, but have never lived in a place with enough room or privacy to get a set and learn. Have learned all I have learned from Robs videos. The proof is in the pudding. Friend of mine has been playing drums for a year, hasn't watched any how to vids or anything. Basically self taught. Me? 3 months so far, and not to sh*t on my friend, but I can play waaaaaaaay better than he can. Thanks Rob for teaching me so much! And the best part, it hasn't costed me a single penny to view his content 🤘

It’s just the more basic way you can play something, it’s not an specific rhythm.

The pocket is a fancy way of saying "playing consistently in time and grooving". People don't usually define it precisely, which sucks, but you'll know when you feel it.
