It just occurred to me, thanks to you, that it hasn't been that I was afraid to wreck the pristine white of the paper or canvas, but that it offered me nothing by way of inspiration...nothing to react to as you say...and as regards that, it really doesnt matter what that first layer is, ive heard some artists call it energy...but mostly it becomes inspiration for the next layer and it for the next and so on...that...is liberating! and increases the fun element. THAT is the looseness you are speaking of. So excited to paint right now !!!

Hello Gaynor---it is 3am here in Ohio & just watched your video. We had a dusting of snow on Monday but it quickly melted. On Christmas Day the temps are looking like 54F which is really warm for this time of year. I thought your ideas of one deciding or figuring out what loosening up means to each person was great advise. I'm looking forward to 2024 as a year of growth in my art. I just turned 65 this week & I can't wait to see what I discover in my art making this year. I usually do watercolor but have done some mixed media in the past. I have a set of acryllics & I just want to take a big sheet of paper & go for it!!! Your frames are so beautiful. He does a wonderful job. I have a block of polystyrene covered with random textured wallpaper samples. It’s great. You can stencil it and change the texture to another easily and also wash it off.

Oh Gaynor, this video was so lovely. I so enjoyed watching you create that piece that I had commented on IG reminded me of Cattails. So fun to watch how a painting comes to life for you. As always, you make it magically happen with a few strokes here and a few strokes there, some mark making that seems random but clearly is not and the perfect addition of dark and light tones. Hi Gaynor,I really enjoyed your video..Like so many I’m sure,I have the fear of the white canvas and sketchbook page!I have a stack of canvases and have painted something on one,not liked it and out comes the gesso and bam! I’m back to the white again lol!Did you ever go through a stage like that?Anyway you have given me the encouragement to have another go and I will hide the gesso lol!Thank you for sharing wonderful artwork a “Christmas” gift for all!❤Looking forward to seeing more!! Hello Beverly, YES, YES, YES.....then I calmed down with the gesso and maybe covered only the bits I didn't like...now I go in with a different colour and shape to get things moving. Hi Ann, If I'm lucky a title will present itself while I'm in the process of making. Sometimes, from out of the blue, I think of something that would be a good name for a painting and jot it down. How about you ?

Thinking of title pre does get an idea started, but then the gaynor thing happens. 🤔 Started crocheting an afgan... all the while looking over at an unfinished canvas on the easle ... hoping things will reveal by not painting and seeking what's there? A title pre may lead ? Wonder how song writers work lyrics and melodies ... Ann

I’m in Salt Lake City Utah you have freed me from being in a rut with my art I’ve been feeling the same way you described you felt before you started doing what you do now. I did watercolour for years in frustration now I know mixed media is what I really should have been doing. @@gaynorpattle thanks for replying so speedily. My zip code is 84108 if that helps finding out shipping. I’ve been to England many times and have shipped items home to myself and it was a terrible price so I know it isn’t cheap. If you are going to sell the painting I hope 🤞 I can have first option to buy. I hope I can afford it lol. The only place I can get the Snowden cartridge paper like yours is Jackson’s it’s $65.00 for 50 sheets which I think is cheap but I know the shipping will double that which is still cheaper than watercolor paper. I lived for 3 months in Castle Combe a few years ago, one of the best experiences of my life. Your boat painting reminds me of another place I love dearly.

Try wearing some cotton gloves underneath to help your skin breathe and keep warm. Boots used to sell them.
