If your Range Rover, Discovery or Freelander is no longer unlocking correctly or intermittently. The door lock/unlock unit contains two DC brushed motors used to drive door release cables. The primary DC motor over time wears out, the issue is with the carbon bushes and the grease used. JLR service centers charge over £250 to replace the unit which can be purchased on eBay for around £80.
These videos shows the process to remove the door cartridge and replace the unit. As well as a minor mistake by me damaging the door lock/unlock internal control cable due to its design. [Front Door Internal Control Cable LR019819]

Just done the drivers door what fun it wasn't the outer door handle was a pig to get off and on I took your advice and left the inner door handle cable on until removed also my window would only open half way when putt all back on I had to loosen the motor bolts a little put it down and up then tighten and its all working now yay no more having to press the key 4 times to unlock the drivers door

Very useful video. As you stated best to remove the electric door lock complete with cables. This is essential when replacing the front passenger door lock which incorporates the emergency key lock mechanism. There are two additional cables to deal with. It is necessary to remove the outer door handle to allow the complete assembly to be removed. To remove the handle you will need to slacken off the retaining screw for the lock cylinder approx 5 turns accessible by removing the grommet from the back edge of the door. Remove the handle retaining screw accessible via a small hole in the panel. Pull open the outer handle as if opening the door and push it rearwards to remove. Add a lot of luck and all should go well.

Thanks for this info. I have done the driver side door and found it easy to unclip and detach the short cable while still inside the door. For the passenger door I will attempt to remove the outer door handle and the actuator with all the cables still attached.

Great video many thanks. A couple of comments from me, take the window right out, it takes two minutes and it’s out of the way. If you take the external door handle off you can take the whole lot out with cables attached then disconnect cables and swap to the new one once out of the door and on the bench.

There are a couple of plastic clips which have a small latch arrangement which grips the glass in place. you need to pop these clips out (with out breaking them!) using a small screwdriver or plastic card (like an old credit card). Once release the window glass will slide out. HIGHLY recommend two people here, one of hold the glass and the other releasing the two clips. Partly lower the window as I have done so you can see the clips and get access to them.

how do you take the passenger front door handle off ? can't see from googling and this door handle is the one with the emergency opening lock which i can't see how to get off ...no wonder its lots of money at a stealer to do this i've been at it 4hrs and finally got the old actuator off ...now to try and put the new one in ...all without taking the door handle off

@ Eazy Draw, as we no longer have freelie I'm afraid I can not show this. But its the reverse of the removal. Some have commented that its easier to take the door handle off but I managed it in the end. The key trick is to hock on the cables on first then position the lock, get someone to help as you run out of hands quickly from memory. Good luck !! Please think to give it a thumbs up :)

This is the third lock that's been replaced on our Freelander but the first Ive done myself. Your video was very good although I did struggle with disconnecting the windows until I enlisted my son's help . Hope it's third time lucky!

Steve Thomas Useful video. A couple of points of note. To remove the window clips I made a 'clip removal tool' a 500mm length of 25mm x 3mm steel. You will need to remove the window weather seal (single screw at the base of the window frame at the door edge). Slide the steel strip down and use it to open each clip in turn. You will need to remove the door handle outer covers to free the cable release. To do this remove the smaller rear cover, two tiny plastic clips retain it, use a small flat blade screwdriver vertically near its join with the larger cover. Gently push down to release it then do the same from below. Be careful, they break easily. Then remove the larger cover by pulling rearwards then out. Finally, remove the outer screw retainer and then remove the inner screw, accessed through a hole in the inner door skin. This last screw holds a plastic plug/clip to be prised out, from outside. The door opening mechanism is now free to be taken out complete with the two cables and lock, with a little jiggling.

excellent run through. Only thing i did different was to thread the internal handle cable though the door panel and removed it with the lock then transfered to the new unit on the bench

From what you saw, woukd replacing just the motor be a viable option? Same specs, but better quality. The idea of buying a whole cheap replacement vs just replacing the electric motors.

Yes you could do this, however it is the worm gear which might be a challenge to get off. One other method is to replace the carbon bushes and arms within the motor. They look like cheap hobby motors! Probably made in china though the whole unit is made in Germany. So much for German engineering as they have used very cheap parts. I guess the motor would have cost about €2 (at most).

I used a small screw driver to part the clips from the glass, you need good eyes and light to see what you doing. Take care not to break the clips.

How do you unclip the glass from the white and yellow clips? There seems to be a bit missing between part 1 and 2. Thanks.

Hi, it was tricky to film that area of the car so hoped most would get the idea from the picture. The window regulator holds the glass in place with those white clips. In the windows are some holes and there is plastic dimple between the two halves of the white clip which locks the regulator white clip to the window. All you need to do is pull back on the top of the white clip and this is enough to release the windows from the regulator holder. You NEED two people as someone has to release the clip and the other person pulls up on the glass gently to releasing the window from the regulator clips. My wife did not want to get filmed hence why there is no footage. Hope that helps...

Thanks for the video. I've just removed my window and have this advice for doing so. 1. Take out the exterior horizontal window rubber. 2. Lower the window 4-6 inches to get access to the clips on the regulator and give yourself 'wiggle room' to get the glass out once released. 3. If you don't have an assistant (I didn't), use strong tape (gaffer etc.) to hold the glass up until the clips are undone and you can lift it out. 4. Get your arm through the vacant speaker cavity and you can reach and prise open both of the regulator clips which hold the glass using your thumb. I had also removed the window rubber that runs around the frame but I'm not sure that was necessary - (I'm moving everything to a new door).

By the way all if the drivers door doesn’t open it’s an MOT fail any other doors doesn’t matter and to get the door to open you need the actuator to be working

Passenger door worse thing ever, as there is a third cable for the emergency key lock, have to remove door handle mechanism. Real pain. 😢

Your instructions are flawed. There are 2 window reg clips to release, one is yellow and only accessible trough the small hole on the right. And to get the lock assembly out without breaking any cables is to remove the door handle with it.

Hi Steve, Just sharing what I found doing the fix, for me the the only way I could release the window was as shown. There maybe a much better way but i worked for me. The cable issue was my fault as i was not aware there was nipple stopping the cable from popping off. If your suggestions help others to carry out their fix, GREAT !!

I read this but then found that both clips can easily be released by working through the speaker hole. I lowered my window 10cm before starting.
