Land Rover Freelander 2 locking & unlocking setting / problems / beeping / IID tool

In this video we look at some problems on Ben's Freelander 2 / LR2. The problem is that the alarm makes a beeping sound when you unlock the car indicating there is a fault with the LR2 locking but the doors lock and unlock fine. We investigate and we use the IID tool to read the fault which turns out to be the alarm ultrasonic motion sensor so we replace this and it all seems fine !

Hi Simon, the reason it didnt clear the code after you'd first changed the sensor and gone through a lock/unlock cycle is that you didn't leave it long enough for the internal environment sensors to engage. You needed to lock it, then leave for at least 30 seconds, preferably a couple of minutes for them to activate. Then an unlock and rescan purged the historical fault. To do this on pre 2012 models, hold the lock and unlock buttons down for 3 or more seconds, wait for the hazards to flash then release. You can unlock all doors with one click then. To go back to the double click option, repeat the steps again.

Amazing video, because of that took longer to watch the video than doing the job, only thing I would recommend is to lower the window glass 2 inches so when you undo the clip you just push the glass up out of the way of the regulator unit, and you must remove the rubber outside gaskets or the door handle will not push back. Would not have known where half the screw's were without you, so many thanks Stephen

The Freelander 2 is a lovely car. Very reliable as well. The one we had still driving around with 215,000 miles on it.

Well done again....thankfully my Freelander II never had any lock/unlock problems but on the Discovery Sport, I get the double chirp after opening and closing the tailgate several times. It always opens but I believe senses battery charge level and if it thinks the charge is falling, it stops the close operation. However to correct it, unlock the rear door and then the tailgate will shut every time after which relock by touching the door handle again as normal....all bleeps now single. I doubt that adds anything except the bleeps seem affected by voltage level...possibly! Good work again men...😃😃😃😃😃

Hi Guys. I was having the double beep issue and thanks to this video fixed it. I removed the sensor and gave it a good clean and a squirt of WD40 on the connector... problem solved!

Finally got round to fitting my replacement alarm sensor. Got it on ebay for 11 quid. I tried to clear the fault code for the alarm sensor with my icarsoft reader but it still kept appearing and the beeping carried on. I came to the conclusion that I'd bought a faulty sensor but about 3 weeks later it mysteriously stopped beeping all on its own and hasn't come back.....happy days Thanks again for the video guys, they're all very helpful.

Mine was doing the same got a second hand sensor and still two beeps on unlock and couldn’t clear the code. 3 days later the beeping has disappeared now and I’ll try and clear the code in the morning glad the beeping has stopped as it was very annoying to say the least. Your video and the fault code prompted me to get the second hand sensor glad I did. To all those out there reading this to try and stop their beeping grab a working sensor and wait lol

We had a 2009 ford escape in the Middle East that had the same settings on the locking mechanism. One push for driver's door only and two pushes on the key fob for all doors because of kid napping issues. I used to push it once and get in and my dear wife struggled to get in, we used to play this game a lot with each other. Great fun! X

Hi Simon. I have the chirping issue from time to time, and it seems related to whenever the bonnet has been opened for maintenance, servicing etc. I have come to this conclusion after years of living with the LR2. I've given up worrying about it nowadays. Everything works okay. Just like Ben's car. And the debris naturally collects in the motion sensor housing. It collects there from the sunroof. Mine's exactly the same. Great video. I had to give up too! 🤣💯👍

Love your videos helped with so many jobs on my Freelander 2. I have followed one of your videos and replaced my Tailgate Handle which was faulty. All good and easy enough to replace 😀 I have a problem now where when I open the tailgate and try to lock the car, horn beeps and it won't lock. Also have a warning on dashboard saying "tailgate open" when it's closed. Problem fixes when I disconnect the battery terminal and reset, and car locks fine and no dashboard warning, until I open tailgate again 🙈 Any ideas ?

Simon hi I am on my 2nd Freelander 2 the first was an XS spec I bought it new in 2014 I did 64000 trouble free miles in it . The lease came to an end after 4 yrs so I bought it and then changed it for a Freelander 2 metropolis specs on a 64 plat 2014 car I have had to change the rear diff as the previous owner didn’t change the oil at all we don’t think . My 1st one had the oil changed on every service and I didn’t have any problems It has now developed a starting fault . Some times I have to re lock and he unlock the car to get the fault cleared , the dash says the car can’t find the key and just will not start . Any ideas? Also I notice your friends car has the same grill damage as mine . Don’t know why but the bottom section appears to be stone chip damage , it’s the only thing I can think of Can I replace just the silver grill or is it the whole front end Dave

GREAT videos you do...can you help me my freelander2 trouble with locking?managed to lock it but then it wouldnt unlock,i used the key to get in alarm went off, when i put key in ignition all was ok,on the dash now its saying tailgate open so i checked it but its not open or loose,i have changed the battery but no luck,could it be the tailgate cuasing the problem..as i also cant open the tailgate from the catch? any suggestions i will try..thnx... Unrelated to this problem. My Freelander 2 had a flat battery. After replacing with new battery, the rear doors central locking (& rear electric windows) don't work at all. Any ideas?

Hi! First of all, I would like to say that I really enjoy watching your videos! You are a really library about Land Rovers. Now I would like a recommendation or suggestion for an OBD code reader for me, to use on my Freelander II, I would like to read and be able to erase the error codes, as well as configure, for example, another type of headlight. Is it possible to read and erase errors with a Bluetooth OBD reader and using a cell phone app like Car Scanner? My car stopped starting, the battery is fine and I believe it is the Car Crash error, so I would like to find out and delete it.

Its a good question - after a certain age mileage and condition are more important but for some people a sunroof / leather seats etc options are a must !

My front passenger door isn't unlocking for some reason? It locks fine with the button, but when I double press to unlock, all doors open, except the front passenger door. I need to open it manually from the inside by leaning over and pulling the handle.

Try unlocking and opening all doors and tailgate. Open bonnet. Remove negative terminal on battery. Wait 5 minutes. Reconnect negative terminal. Close all doors and tailgate. Press lock once only. All doors should now lock. Wait 3 minutes. Press lock. You have now double locked. Wait 5 minutes. Press unlock once. Driver's door only should open. Press unlock again all doors and tailgate should now be open. Phew ! If this hard reset does not work. You have a defective passenger lock.

Mine starts chirping when I lock the car with the sunroof open. After that lock it chirps when unlocking....

Simon this is a known problem,internet tells us do a "hard reset"remove both battery terminals from battery and hold together for 30 sec?.I have replaced o\s\f & n\s locking motor assy's since this was done it chirps.I keep meaning to do reset one day soon. regards alistair.

Yes i am not sure if the battery reset is the cure or just a temporary fix.... clearly the IID tool can see an error with the module... I suspect that a lot of Freelanders with this problem will be due to this module.

I had this same issue on my FL2 64 plate and its actually a warning that the vehicle battery is low on voltage mine was only showing 11v so replaced the battery and the double chirp when unlocking has now gone

Yep double lock sets the deadlock and causes a beep. I thought the internal motion sensor also is only activated with the double press but not 100% sure on that.

On the pre 2013 models, you can't programme it in the car, you'll need a diagnostic machine with programming capability.

My metropolis never made a noise when unlocking. If a door isn’t shut it would show up on the dash between the speedo & Rev counter.

@@L663 I don’t have the car anymore,but I’m 99% sure there was a plan view of the car & a red line was on the door that was open. The car was new on a 64 plate. With it being the run out model it might have had more bits & Bob’s than normal car.

@@codenamenel normally if 2 stage locking is enabled it should make a audible confirmation upon 2 presses of the lock button. It will depend on the age of the vehicle as older models will not have this feature. The audible sounds is always enabled from factory when the vehicles were produced.

@@motorlane4485 it's a 61 plate freelander 2 sd4, got double locking, 1 click is just to lock and partial set the alarm, 2 clicks to fully set. 1 unlock click unlocks drivers door, 2 to open everything, hold the unlock button for a few seconds and it unlocks all the doors and opens all the windows. It's Never made any noise though

Agreed, if audible locking is enabled. Double-pressing enables the internal movement sensors and deadlocks the doors. I have had to educate JLR service reps on how their cars work before now. It’s the same in my Disco 4 and a 2016 Evoque. So unless you are leaving the dog in the car, always double-press.

@@L663 The Freelander got a terrible rep when they had the engine failures and basically LRNA abandoned the owners when the supply of replacement engines and parts dried up
