With what makes a great player (given the current ranking system promoting caps play… though this is also true for fixed) I would add patience being perhaps even at the top of the list of traits.

I genuinely enjoy that you have two uploads a day! Your show is great. Don't feel it to be a necessity to do two uploads every day if it exhausts you or you need a break every now and then, but just do know that I and many others certainly appreciate the continuous content to watch!

Hey Pete, just wanted to share how much fun I've had playing Risk over the last 6-8 months after finding your channel. I really enjoy the strategy and psychology that you present and your content has been a big piece in my continued engagement with the game after struggling early on. I play all kinds of settings (classic, progressive, caps and zombies mostly) and was pretty excited to make it to GM last month. Sending good vibes your way for the rest of 2023 and into 2024! P.S. to all the mobile players out there, playing with a :120 timer was a huge benefit to my game!

looking back do you think that keeping to your original plan of pushing into france would have been better? I understand the temptation to take advantage of red's noobery, but I'm wondering if trying to maintain two positions so early without bonuses was too difficult a task to navigate.
@bigpap90
@bigpap90 Жыл бұрын
Yeah creating wars early with this meta seems like a death wish with players gathering territory bonuses and expanding rapidly
@SpursTraveler
@SpursTraveler Жыл бұрын
Yeah, especially because, based on the blizzards, you can probably assume there was another cap in the Spain pocket. Magenta was probably in for a long war anyway that limited their short term advantage with the second cap.
@FreePete
@FreePete Жыл бұрын
I don't know which direction I could have pushed from my capital that would have been advantageous. Breaking germany t1 would have been correct only on retrospect and fighting purple for France could have been mutually assured destruction while taking an exterior capital is always a solid play when you get to hold it.

So one thing I see a lot is after making a single attack off a stick, top players tend to only move 3 then fortify back. Is this just a trick of limited information by not letting whoever else see your stack size?
@FreePete
@FreePete Жыл бұрын
For me it's a risk-mitigation move. In case I misclick and fortify my stack off a cap or want to fortify something else. The misclick, misfortify might be extremely unlikely but good habits/muscle memory can save you from a game losing error

@@FreePete I've noticed my games are tougher in these meta settings when I choose a cap that I have to reach around territories to get the troop bonus. Pretty savvy play by pink at 8:42, never lets you get comfortable.

Everything we produce is nature. A great point that is made way too little! Love you, Pete!
@JudgeDredd010
@JudgeDredd010 Жыл бұрын
I understand the point but I don’t think many people would use that as the definition of nature though. Normally it would be something along the lines of something that can be produced in nature. And then something humanity produces that isn’t found in nature is then ‘man-made’.
@Dr_Scarlett
@Dr_Scarlett Жыл бұрын
I know you get the point, and you counter with the fact that the line is drawn at what we make - for most people. That is true, but also exactly the reason why the point can bear reinforcing. When we consider what we make to be as much nature as we are, we open up many interesting Darwinian and moral follow up questions. Besides that, clearly drawing the line is not straightforward. So when I eat a worm or a salad leaf, that's all nature, correct? What if I cook the worm or prepare the salade first, is that no longer nature but man-made? What if I use a wooden spatula (that I carved with a flint rock) to dig out the worm and eat it raw, still not nature but man-made? What if a chimp uses a stick to get some ants? Nature? A chimp is apparently self aware, just like us. Not nature, but "chimp-made"? What if some gibbon learns to do that trick? Or a crow? You understand my argument. If a line is this hard to define, in my experience you need to re-evaluate the question you are asking. If find relinquishing the whole distinction much more attractive.
@Dr_Scarlett
@Dr_Scarlett Жыл бұрын
Another thing. A hidden part in all this (and I am alluding to that when I mix chimps gibbons or crows into the equation) is 'what is man'. Why are we different? What distinction is so special and how distinguished must a creature be to warrant putting the labor fruits of this creature in a special category that is no longer part of nature? This points to another insight - many people consider man itself not to be part of nature! They may not admit this. They may not even be aware that deep down they think man is so special. It makes perfect sense to think a factory is not nature if man has some kind of special status within nature or is apart from her entirely. However, man not being part of nature is a very difficult argument to uphold scientifically. Man being extremely special within nature is also slippery idea for other reasons. Maybe, if we understand consciousness and intelligence better, we no longer hold ourselves in such awe, and the question whether or not we, or our artifacts are part of nature might be put to rest.

Been playing less than a week. Ranks don't mean who is good, just who has played many games. I haven't really figured out the scoring yet. Maybe Master and above are better at judging that? IDK. Only come up against a few Experts and Masters on FFA. Usually they at least don't die immediately, but don't necessarily win either.

I’m curious why you usually play good neighbor, except for when you can steal a capital? And you prioritize taking a capital which is only a +2 over a bonus that can generate a lot more troops, even in a very non-strategic position.
@FreePete
@FreePete Жыл бұрын
The primary value of an exterior capital is not really in the +2 troops but in the vision of a different part of the board with a well defensible outpost (caps are 'supposed' to defend well)

Pink went revenge by breaking your bonuses since you took his red cap. 😂 I think if you left it alone... pink and white leave you alone until white runs out of spots to attack and pink has that card block on lock or maybe white busts pink before it comes down to it. None the less purple and black was going to dominate that game being buddies. Red punted hard turn 1. I would have capped on Israel and identify as the Gaza strip.

In principle the prime directive sounds good... but it's very short sighted, or arrogant. We are not separate from nature.... A beaver damn or termite mound or a chimp with a tool is all natural then so is the hoover damn, skyscrapers and the torque wrench. If the "natural world" exists in any way then we are part and parcel of it. A daisy is no more natural than a nuclear power station as both are natural developments of natural systems. Only by raising ourselves above/outside of nature can we be unnatural... As if somehow we're not a natural product acting naturally in our natural environment. If an ants natural environment if a forest floor dug into a tunnel network the humans natural environment is materials erected into dwellings and village/city. Heavy industry is a NATURAL byproduct of human beings. Just like fungus/mold outbreaks can destroy a woodland. We aren't elevated, we may be different in our cognitive function and therefore our complex tool use, but we aren't unique in any regards to the fundamental products of nature and the simple fact they "do" things to change their environment.... And any claim otherwise is not principle based on natural world it's a purely spiritual or metaphysical consciousness claim of superiority over all other life (it not being special, but we are cos we're 'smart') Utterly without merit. That long walk of text being said why? Because the idea that us contacting some less advanced species and introducing ourselves and our tech etc etc is no different to 1 nation in history contacting another and having tech share. It not interference of the natural order.... It's not morally wrong to tell the truth ....(tell them we and so more life, exists) The prime directive is not just about waiting for warp,but is that, but it's a full stand off untill then. That's not moral, you're concealing the truth from them. Now, that's the pure logic based on the "unnatural" interference claim. The realistic answer is actually whet you said... Be more selfish. In regards to galactic travel and assuming the galaxy is rich with life ... If we get out there and find other less advanced species we need to NOT give them tech trey can use against us. We need to monitor closely and study and make sure we know their intention and capabilities and act based on our conclusions. If good and can be trusted, help. If bad and can't be trusted, destroy. Yes that cold, and yes our very own personal subjective idea of good or bad. Why? Because on a galactic scale the potential scale an out of control civ can grow to and how fast is truly insane and any small chance of them attacking us is eventually raised to 100% with time and galaxy scale growth. It takes less that 1 million years to slowly populate the entire galaxy with untold quadrillions of people as soon as you get even 0.5% light speed. In all seriousness, from a survival tactic POV if we find it's full of potential species just waiting to get into space we need to act... fast!!! Because it only takes 1 species with a slight tendency towards aggression to get into space and grow so big there unstoppable. The distances are too big for real time policing .... So we can't have a galaxy law enforcement to catch bad actors in a multi space traveling species galaxy. If we are not brutal in our dominance of the galaxy and send probes everywhere and monitor for thousands and millions of years and keep monitoring untill we populated every star solar system and have indexed every rogue planet in our galaxy and a few close by too, to make sure no one get advanced without us knowing and gets a million year population growth under their belt or we might get eaten. I'm not a violent person. Unless you're a germ in my toilet, then I bleach you. And I share the majority of DNA with that... Aliens? Nah mate, assuming they're there and assuming life is born through a long battle and only the champions get into space... We can't assume all aliens suddenly become hippy guru_s of enlightenment once they get into space. We see no evidence of sprawling galactic empires, in relation to it's potential timespan the universe and galaxies and especially 2nd gen stars are very young .. There is a chance life is super rare or that we are just very early and ho one else has sprawled yet. So we have, potential if it's not already a zoo hypothesis lol... we have a small window to get out there and secure our borders because we need to. And if anyone has any crazy ideas of that being paranoid or negative ask yourself this... What would lions to if they were 4x bigger? What would an ant do to you if it was as hig as a horse? If you think nature is just waiting to hug you, you're insane. In the words of Aragon... "We must be quick!" 👍😎

Interesting im sick of the climate agenda. The climate will change and always has and it's audacious that people believe they can control the climate. We do have an effect even plankton does but I don't believe it's the end of the fucking world. We will have to adapt like people always have for thousands of years.
@FreePete

I'm interested in conversation about fact. The climate agenda being politicized and the politicization being used to tax me and transfer that money to certain corporations is a negative. The destruction of a habitable natural world for me and my children is also a negative. Both are bad and both are probably occurring to my best understanding of the story I'm being told. What are we going to do about that? Well as I always like to remind people that all meaningful political action boils down to electoral reform so if we actually care to try to do something to fix the climate the only viable first step is to improve the way we are goverened.
