I'm slowly, relishing each of your episodes from the beginning, having only just found you. I had enough of La Vagabonde and am so delighted by your unassuming attitude and fascinating natural approach. Great work guys, don't change a thing. I still love Dan and Kika on Uma, but you're episodes are awesome. Cheers from a Pom living in Maryland USA

Excellent episode as usual. Your channel is by far my favorite sailing channel on you tube! Why? Many reasons: both of you exhibit a calm professional demeanor when approaching challenges. The seamanship and naturalist skills (oh and the cooking) are explained very well. Your consistently solid attempts at managing risk well and not over managing risk is refreshing. Taking the time to point out little tidbits of anthropology such as cave art and ethno/paleo botanical findings in a casual conversational tone is cool. And you both have very nice personalities. Oh and finally you video and sound are really top shelf. There is a zen like quality embedded in each episode that relaxes me after I finish a 12 hr shift in the ER. Cheers my friends! And keep up the great work! Matt.
@FreeRangeLiving6 жыл бұрын
Thank you for that very heartwarming praise Matthew. Being congratulated on a calm professional demeanor by an ER specialist is high praise indeed. Risk management is as you know, a fine balancing act and your acknowledgment of that is appreciated. As our audience grows, we are thrilled to find so many considerate people drawn to our work and are encouraged to keep doing what we do. Thanks again and welcome to the Free Range family.

I had a commercial shipyard do some rust repair on a steel survey vessel and when I went to check on their progress saw that instead of cutting out the rusted/weakened parts of the hull they had simply welded patches over them. When I saw what they had done I referred them to the contract where I had specified that rusted portions be cut out and new metal be welded into place so as to be flush with the rest of the hull. And that the entire hull be restored to the thickness of the metal as originally built. This was a shipyard that in addition to repairing ships also built small ships. Talk about a dodgy repair. They built beautiful ships and I still don't know if they thought I was entirely stupid or if they thought they were playing a grand joke on me. What they had done was almost beyond belief. Like sewing an off-color patch over a hole in a pair of jeans. It's funny thinking back on it but I also wonder what would have happened if I had not written the contract carefully. They ended up doing it properly but if it was a joke on me it certainly was an expensive one for them. Lots of man-hours and welding rods.

Smart to have written the contract yourself!!

As a kid growing up, I put that Tabasco on everything bar ice-cream. It gets a little less play now because of Pascale's great cooking (needs nothing on it) but I wouldn't sail without it.

I don't know if there are enough words to describe how relaxing your videos are. The music with the wrecks in the harbor was perfect. I really like your statement in the beginning that a man must have a spear, and all that I could think of was a young boys first hunting tools is always a spear. Nice to see Pascale having so much simple fun in the rain. It was beautiful. Thank you both very much.
@FreeRangeLiving6 жыл бұрын
Thanks very much Bob. I bet we made a bit of a scene in that harbour, we were so thrilled to be getting rain. We stayed out in it till there was no part of us that wasn't like a prune. That spear has proven very versatile and it feels very strange to me not to have one in hand when walking around.

Once entered a small bay in Southeast Taiwan on a 308' Navy destroyer as we were being chased by a monster typhoon. All anchors out and nylon mooring lines to large palm trees onshore saved our ship. We were so low on fuel (ballast) that we could have turned turtle staying at sea in 70-80 foot waves. Thank God we had a brilliant captain who wasn't afraid to do something out of the ordinary to save the ship and the lives of those aboard her. Just saying your reconnoitering is a very good idea. Loved the video and narrative with perfect music background. You have great taste and a wealth of sea knowledge.

It's true! They aren't waterproof. I can't believe it either. The other thing is if you are buying one in person, pick up several and shake them. Some will rattle, from loose beads of solder inside. As you can imagine, those can short things out inside. So pick a non rattler.

Another fabulous episode Troy and Pascale. I loved the editing as the music always suits the sombreness or drama of the scene. I’m surprised, Troy, you didn’t have a half kg of Xanthorrhoea resin lying around in the cabin just in case you needed to stick a barbed head onto a stick of bamboo! Nice muddy by the way. Your joy at feeling the rain made me smile and Pascale your improvised bath was a great idea. Can’t wait for the next episode of your epic adventure. SFR.

Cheers mate. In that area spinifex resin may have been easier to get hold of but not as easy as epoxy! That spear has since got a few squid and some garfish for bait. Very versatile addition to the boat. I have since made a bigger heavier one for hunting the flats. Stay tuned.

I keep learning more and more every time I watch another of your videos, and I have been sailing all my life. You guys are fantastic. If I make it to Australia I am definately looking you up. I feel like I need to go out and find a straight bamboo and whip up a spear or two. I wonder if some Chesapeake Bay rockfish would hold still for a minute or two, give me a fighting chance. Simrad TP 10 on Amazon is $385 US, in the US. I am not sure what the US to Aus exchange rate is but 1500 seems excessive. I watched your other video where you showed using the tiller pilot to control your windvane. Is that a modification that could be made to most windvanes?
@FreeRangeLiving6 жыл бұрын
Australia is very expensive on a lot of imported products. That principle can be used on any wind vane that uses a servo pendulum ( most) to provide the steering power with a air-foil that is pushed side to side.

Great as always! I had a TP 10 apart last year, I'd say it's waterproof. Certainly not made for submerging, hosing down with a pressure washer, ... though. Just sillicone seals & rubber grommets. Mine seemed to be broken but it turned out the power cable from the battery to the outlet was made out of five pieces of wire by the previous owner. Corrosion did it's thing and every time the tiller pilot did heavy steering (drawing a good amount of current) the voltage dropped and the tiller pilot restarted into the "off" position. Needed some time to figure that one out...

Thank you for that Horst- not just for us but any other viewer that may benefit by your explanation. That voltage drop is a real killer and can lead to some goose chases. When I first laid hands on Mirrool, I had to pull out quite a bit of wiring that was daisy chained as you describe, not marine cable or was solid housing flex! Also, in my ship engineer days, I would go through the distribution board every three months and tighten all the connections with a 1000V safe screw-driver as a preventative measure.
