1st time I saw John live was this tour at the FOX THEATER, SAN DIEGO,CALIFORNIA. Immediately a fan. Then again at SHELTER ISLAND Concert series,San Diego. I was at the stage singing right along with him. After their 3rd Encore,He came up to me and said "GREAT JOB MATE!" and held his hand out to shake. THE LEGEND was so humble as I was Humbled by his Kindness. Then Graeme Goble bent down to shake my hand...TOO COOL. Wayne Nelson was living in Del mar California and i saw him at a MR. MISTER show at The Del mar fairgrounds. Great Guy. PRAYERS UP To one of the Best EVER! GODSPEED Johnny Farnham ♡ Peace and Strength to you

I come back to this vid at least once a year. Satisfies my soul. I have heard many amazing voices over the years. Not his best time IMO but after this he made the impossible comeback look easy becoming "The voice", "try and understand it" ; ) John Farnham is a most humble performer who carried the respect of the industry along with him for over 45 years setting a benchmark in this country, becoming an "Australian of the Year" and inspired a generation of young performers, unfortunately few if any will surpass his legacy. "Don't You Know It's Magic". Love him or hate him, he's a bloody legend.

John Farnham has one of the greatest voices of all time. So also has Glenn Shorrock. I really don't think you can compare them. But I love this version; very refreshing, free and easy. For those who are being a little critical, please remember the vocal was live and John couldn't edit out any oversing. He might have gotten carried away once or twice but he was only having a bit of fun. I'd get carried away too if I had a voice like that. Let's be serious, his voice is like a musical instrument!

They're sung in different styled. The original is mellow and a classic. This version is a bit jazzier and more uptempo. It baffles me why Farnham wasn't famous in the US. I never heard of him till I was an adult.

Why John didnt become famous in the US back in the 80s and 90s was Because He was Given a Choice of Staying in Australia Where all his family Was or Move To a Foreign Country and John chose his Family Which is Very noble of him ....but nevertheless John did make a Breakthrough in the USA 3 of His Singles Made the American Charts His Iconic pop/Rock Anthem You're The Voice That was Released in 1986 in Australia Reached the US Billboard Hot 100 Chart in 1990 It Peaked at number #82 And held the Position for 5 weeks To be Very honest John Farnham is Known In America For sure Without a Doubt....but he just isnt a Big Iconic Legendary Singing Star As he is Here in Australia or Parts like the UK or New Zealand or Ireland or Germany Or Canada He did Extremely Well with his Albums and Songs In those Parts of the world and Even Denmark and Sweeden Hes An Absolute Legend In those Parts But in the USA Nah Not so much but thanks to KZbin and social streaming apps and social media That people in America and around the World are Daily Discovering John Farnham and Listening to His songs and NOW he is Getting the Fame and Recognition he so Greatly Deserves I mean if you ask Someone in the US now do you know who John Farnham is and Play them The song You're The Voice 1 million per cent they will know the song Well and Know who John Farnham is I can bet my life on it tbh .....hope this has helped X

John’s vibrato technique is even better, I personally don’t care much for that too high frequency vibrato such as Mercury’s, Celine Dion’s, etc, sounds somewhat goatlike to me (I do love their voices though, just don’t think they have the best vibrato). John has more a Stevie Wonder quality to his voice, with all that soul and swing combined with the super high notes. He does have the drive and rock voice too, reminds me of Lou Gramm and Richard Marx

I remember John getting interviewed where they said, "John you have been known to oversing songs, why is that?" And John's response was a classic 'Because I can'... And so he bloody should... I mean what a stupid comment to say to a singer's singer... One of the many reasons how John gets the respect and admiration for his voice, is because to put bluntly 'he oversings'. He wouldn't be known as the voice, or by far the best singer in Australia of all time if he was a plain singer now would he!

Honestly can't say anything bad about John and his voice. His range and control is phenomenal. But this is Glenn's song and it always will be. That's just the way it is.

This version is my favorite, John singing with incredible harmony and tone.. He Reminds me of Steve Perry of Journey in this one ...

I like John's vocals on this one just a smidge better than the 1983 Melbourne HBO track.

It's got a swing/blues sound to it, I think. Both covers are unique. IMO, they can't really be compared. They are both separate.

Man! John's voice is so high. Did he take the key up a notch? What range. That chorus is NOT easy to sing.

SingersSpaceNYC John sure did take it up a notch. John can take take it up a few notches indeed. He’s older in vid below, but he’s now 70 and still here singing and touring. Vid below John takes it up a few more notches in about the 1980s or so. His vocal range is pretty good kzbin.info/www/bejne/mqeYZZqfhLiFgdU

@@Maxq1 Of course. But they are two different singers and bring two very different, but both excellent, interpretations to this song. I enjoy listening/watching both.

I was so used to hearing the GS version on cd along with the music video, but WOW! this man can sing! I didn't know there was another version. No disrespect to GS, I like both.

Thats the spirit, there should always be plenty of room for improvisation with any song, I admit I love the GS version like no other but I find it interesting how johnny farnham seems to struggle with one or two of the vocal shifts, yet excels at others, the fact is, they are two very different singers and both bring their individual interpretations. Farnham could have gone global but he didn't want to, guess he loves Australia too much to care about anywhere else, you've just gota love him, he's a top bloke, thanks John!

Pretty close.....John was singing live, everything else was playback. They tried to remove John's original vocals from the original playback but you can still hear it sometimes during the song.

thanks but it sounds all live to me. This sounds different then the recorded track . I think it is the back round vocals from the group might have sounded like an echo. Unless they recorded this version specifically for this show.

If you listen to the original recording, there are strings that lead into the second verse ("That's the way it began...") but here there is a dual-guitar part (around the 0:55 mark). If it's playback, it didn't come from the original recording. I had to listen several times to figure it out.
