Can someone explain to me how the shield technology works in Dune? Ex. why is the shield oscillating at 0.48 and why it didn't manage to block the projectile?
@Moritz55823 күн бұрын
Shields work against physical projectiles, but have an absolutely devastating Interaction with lasers, for example when shot with a lasgun. In the books lasguns are a thing, but I feel to a much smaller extend compared to the films. The shields are designed to stop projectiles, but let objects through, if they move with a specific velocity. The shown projectile slowly tries to match this velocity to get through.
@robynsun_love23 күн бұрын
Shields (more specifically, Holtzman shields) only block objects above a certain speed and a certain mass (something like 10 cm per second and/or a few grams.) Air (and aerosols generally) are diffuse enough to pass through unimpeded; which is why the Baron’s personal shield failed to fully protect him from the poison gas released by Leto’s dying breath in Part 1. There isn’t exactly a way around this unless everyone with a shield equipped is also wearing a mask and an oxygen tank. The kind of projectiles used against the grounded Atreides fleet in Part One, as well as this ornithopter, are capable of decelerating mid-flight, allowing them to pass through the shield, before magnetically latching onto their target and then detonating - the resulting explosion is then contained by the shield until the shield generator itself is destroyed by the flames; releasing the explosion. In order to stay form-fitting around their wearers, the shields still have to take the brunt of the kinetic energy of impacts - they protect against all ranged projectiles and conventional explosions, but not necessarily all blunt-force trauma, if someone is knocked off their feet. Laser weapons (lasguns) cannot be used against shields; the beam crossing the shield would trigger a small nuclear explosion, killing both the shielded target and their assailant - given that bullets simply bounce off the shields, back to swords and daggers it is. The thrumming vibration of any shield that touches the surface of Arrakis will quickly be felt by the nearest sandworm, which is then driven into a killing frenzy more dangerous than they otherwise already are. Hope this helps. :)

One problem with the Villeneuve dune is that it creates great inconsistency with the shield vs projectile convention that the book set up so elegantly. In dune, shields guard against projectile weapons. Period. Laser weapons are not used when there is a likelihood of shields also being in usage because they will cause a nuclear chain reaction and detonate. They also explicitly say that shields are not used on arrakis because it drives the worms into a kiIIing frenzy and attracts them. So why are they using shields in this film if they A) just have readily available shield penetrating weapons in utter ubiquity, and B) they will call worms which they absolutely do not want to come near a harvester??? The attack on the atreides was also like this where almost everything with a shield was useless because they had projectiles that just slowly phased through them
@jamesbrice326725 күн бұрын
Worms can only sense shield vibrations through the ground, ornithopters are safe. Shields prevent projectile weapons from both sides, Paul had to lure the gunner into firing so Channi could take the shot. For safety purposes the Fremen only used lasers on the Harvester when no ornithopters were present.
@beezzarro25 күн бұрын
@@jamesbrice3267 shields attract either way in the book, which is in continuity with the physics of sound vibrations. We see chani's shot penetrate the shield, Duncan and Leto are hit with darts that penetrate shields, a harkonnen ship tries to shoot Duncan's ornithopter down with a laser, and all the atreides carriers are hit with similar munitions.

@remoquillojosemiguel1105Ай бұрын
They do have laser weapons. They were used in the first movie to cut through a heavy door. Harkonnen troops also used laser rifles to return fire against the fremen in the first scenes of Dune II. The reason why laser weapons arent prevalent is because in this universe, lasers coming into contact with shields causes an explosion as powerful as a tactical nuke and nobody knows if the explosion will occur at the target or the one firing the laser gun or both, hence the return to melee combat since kinetic weapons are not as effective while laser weapons are dangerous to use
@Ilyas-ty6cyАй бұрын
you literally just see it in the first second one of them use laser rifle as a weapons. Just look again. It called lasgun, even something that come from the copter is also laser, it just in Dune world is put more realism and laser light is barely can be seen by our eyes, or almost invisible on the day light. edit : also, in Dune world when Shield active, that when you literally shouldnt use lasgun on someone with Shield. Because shooting laser to someone using Shield will create a nuke level explosion to both someone with Shield, and the one using las gun. That why in most battle using lasgun is forbidden, until it sure it safe to use it.
