This video is not a tutorial: it shows examples of famous French (Parisian) women so you can see what their aesthetics and their beauty routine in terms of hairstyle and makeup look like. I tackle skincare, lips, eyes, eyebrows, brands and hair.
The idea behind this video series is to look at "French chic" from an international perspective.
Comments and opinions along the way are mine, you may very well disagree ;-)
Thumbs up if you liked this video!

I love that you mentioned that foundation is not necessary. I'm 19 and have clear skin so Ive never seen the point of it but all the makeup tutorials nowadays have primer, foundation, concealer, setting spray.. Jesus Christ. it makes me feel like my skin is clogged up so I avoid it. good to know Parisian women do too.

Lipi Rastogi Unfortunately I have a lot of broken capillaries around my nose, and on my chin, as I age, so I always even everything out with a BB or CC cream because they are lighter than foundations. I wish I could get away with just using an untinted moisturizer! I usually just use a BB cream, just a touch of blush or bronzer, a light colored illuminating mineral eyeshadow, brown mascara, and a tinted lip balm. My goal is to look as natural as possible, to use natural products, and above all to look like myself! Enjoy your youth, I wasted mine trying to look my age, with just a little too much makeup, because I had a baby-face!

You are making the right choice Lipi! I am 57 and have never worn more than an occasional touch of concealer since I was a teenager. I get compliments on my skin all the time. Don’t think I’ve had easy skin either, I have rosacea but learned early that the less I mess with it the better. For anyone with very sensitive skin or rosacea try Clinique Redness Solutions line - calming cream, protector w/SPF and cleanser. Moisturize with DHC products. It’s a Japanese company online and their line based on olive oil. I set up my nieces and many friends with these soothing products very young and those that didn’t succumb to the lure of trendy & harsh products have beautiful skin. Smooth and pamper your skin - don’t torture it! End of my preaching. 😉

My notes for this video 1)-using misellar water for removing makeup. 2)- prefer golden colors over pinkish on their face. 3)- the eyes or the lips. 4)- color of maskara that complements the color of the eye. At night:add a think line of winged eyeliner. 5)- the shape of eyebrow :- keep it natural. 6)- hair :- nourish it very well Ends can't be dry Roots cant be greesy Between the roots and the ends, it's preferred to have shine. They like to keep it in layers. Bangs and braids are awesome.

There is no harm to our community Justine, don't worry. Since the beginning of internet things like this are happening. Although I am all for freedom of speech, I am even more for respect and civil behavior. We don't know why some ppl do nasty things. We can't "fix" them, change them or teach them the lesson of socially acceptable behavior. Therefore, the best is not to get in commenting, and you can block individuals who are going over the line. Nothing can spoil my love for fashion, beauty and small community of gorgeous ladies on this channel with Justine in the front seat:)))

Either the lips or the eyes -that's how I've learned it too. I also always go for maximum effect with minimum effort. I had no idea that's the French way of going about it, I just find the idea of needing to put a lot of effort into my hair and make up in order to look nice depressing. Also, if you go all out every day you can't step it up for special occasions anymore.

I have witnessed it each time I visited paris and it (as well as aging) has affected how I do things too. Less is definitely more. No overdrawn lips, no fresh blow outs on anyone under 70. I watched girls on the metro with bare face and just slick of warm red lipstick, that looked amazing even with light hair and eyes. Or a coat of mascara and maybe some matte bronzer and gorgeous as can be. Not everyone looks the same. Women take pride in their natural features and hair texture and that's so liberating and beautiful. I have allergies and redness problems so all I ever use are French farmacy brands, Avene, Bioderma, Uriage and Caudalie being my favorites for respective products. I have managed to ditch foundation thanks to those and only use dab of concealer in case of redness occasionally, and play up either my lips or my brows, which are my best feature. Hair color is also often natural or closest to the natural shade, which again I find amazing, so I ditched hair color for years now too and stick to my natural brown. Those women love themselves, their imperfections, and their strong points. They wear nice but ultimately comfortable clothing, that lets them live without worrying about outfits.

I know this video is old, but it's so affirming to me! When I was 13 -- nearly 4 decades ago -- I went to modeling school and French skincare/makeup/hair was taught to us religiously. I'm relieved (and just a little smug) to hear that everything I learned was dead-on accurate. It thrills me that the beauty standards of French women haven't changed at all. It's also nice to hear that there is one thing I've done right my entire life.

That was great. Could you do a video about the "mindset" of how a French woman gets dressed in the morning? Like - what does she consider for a weekday? The questions she asks herself. I'm American and it seems that here there is an all or nothing attitude - it's either yoga pants and a tshirt or a super "done/finished " look.
@emmaphilo4049

MsPapersquirrel french women worry to look good at all time but in a relaxed way. It's like not that done but they want to look cute in a constant way even through little things that doesn't require too much time like a bit of mascara or a cute tee shirt. It's really different from Americans I think.

I am not French, either, and I am from a very small village, but even my 60+ mother changes from "home clothes" to normal ones (jeans, leather pants...) when she goes to a grocery store less than a kilometre away, and she always puts at least mascara and some lip product in the morning when taking care of her skin in the morning, even if she is just going to a forest to pick berries. It's just a habit.

HATE how so many people in California wear yoga pants daily. Kids at school too. A few years ago, you would see yoga pants/leggings only at school pickup when moms had just come from or were going to the gym. Now it's standard fare 24/7 because they're "comfortable". It's embarrassing to me that that is what our clothing has become. I hope that there are other places in the world (besides India) where women wear stylish, comfortable clothes--even jeans are better.

Hi Justine. I was working at my computer today and youtube randomly presented me with some of your clips, including this one. It's very "haute" to be into French beauty and style nowadays, with numerous books written on the topics of how to dress, live, eat, and relax in the "French" way (yes, I've read them). I find your tips and advice super accessible and easy for the average, busy woman (French or not) to relate to. I loved your comments about hair, especially -- the French way (here in America, what am I DOING spending tons of time and money blowing out/flat-ironing/curling my hair? The worst thing about it is that, even if it looks nice, I simply don't WANT to). This world generally needs to take a chill pill (hear that, ladies?). Many of us are trying to dial it down in this busy world while hoping to remain elegant and confident. In a world where I have resisted Instagram and all sorts of others things, you're giving me an "in" back into beauty that's so refreshing (and empowering!). Thank you for your infectious smile, friendly approach, and streamlined, sympathetic advice. Merci!

I feel as though a lot of these things are rules that European women in general go by. My own mother, from Poland, always taught me that it's important to take care of my skin, that it's worth spending on quality products, makeup should never be overdone; etc ;etc. I don't feel that these are strictly "French" attributes. Nonetheless, an enjoyable video!

I have the same philosophy with the exception that when it comes to beauty products high cost does not always equate to better quality. This applies particularly to skin care. My skin care purchases are more scientifically proven ingredients driven these days. I will admit there is something about luxurious packaging that speaks to my feminine desires however.
@mulliganstew72
@mulliganstew72 4 жыл бұрын
Karen .c.h yes and higher end/quality skin care lasts longer in my opinion. Like I use a clinical face wash for $30 but it will last me six months. If I buy something cheap I’ll go through it really quickly. And with make up and cosmetics the packaging is important! For example, with drugstore cosmetics if you drop it once & it will turn to dust immediately, but with the higher end stuff it’s packaged so nicely, has stronger pigment, and won’t trash the make up bag because the caps come off. I have become a bit of a product snob I guess but to me it’s just like with clothes, it’s a better cost for value to invest a little bit. Free gift with purchase coat, samples, and chasing all the sales helps. However, It really sucks when everything runs out at the same time & it’s time to re-up...really hurts the wallet!!

Yes! Thumbs up for going for premium-class makeup :) I got this from my Russian mom- I don't use it that much anyway, so it's not a huge expense. Although my favorite red lipstick isn't Chanel, it's Armani ;) Also, do you want to make a video on fragrances? it's such a fun thing to discuss! Do you use them a lot? I always struggle with them in the super-casual Berlin- lots of people here don't really wear perfume, so a perfume fan like me has to be very subtle... But maybe it's different in the fashion sphere?

Lovely - while I agree with much of what you say, I can't on the brows or liner. Then again I come from the classic, older North American woman's perspective - and sometimes I feel like I'm the only one who sees this. As we age, brows definitely need some adjustment so as not to look angry when your not and that includes tweezing the top. ha ha ha

French women seem to be very similar to italian women. When I was living in Italy, they were never using a lot of makeup, and the hair was as natural as possible. I think this is nice, but at the same time, the markets had very little options of hair products compared to Brazil (my home country). Since they generally don't change the color or the shape of the hair, they probably need less products to fix the damage. I can't be like this because I love from time to time to change my hair color and do some curls, so I really need hair products that can treat damaged hair.

Stella Rajoria well, in the city where I was living (Florence) I've never seen italian women with crazy hair colors, like pink, blue. But maybe this depends on the city, maybe cities like Milano have more diversity on hair color.

Caroline A. Yes crazy colours are used almost never, I live near Milan and in these latest years they have become fashion, but still you can find very few people wearing them, we use mainly more natural colours (bright reds and pale blonds are condidered almost like crazy colours too)

Urgh, I live in the UK - Cheshire to be more specific. Everything is fake. The majority of the young women wear so much makeup that you don't recognise them when they have a clean face. They spend hours in tanning salons, or overdose on fake tan - they look like goldfish in overtight dresses. SPF is something which they view as a pointless tan blocker. I am like a pale stranger here, but when I am in Paris, I feel at home. I visit Paris at least once a year, or spend a week in the South. I visit Citipharma and stock up on La Roche Posay - which you can get in Boots stores in the UK, but the prices are inflated and the sales ladies know very little. Every time I leave France it is with a heavy heart. I would like to see more about hair care, especially about hair colour. I have been getting grey hair since my late teens/early twenties due to anemia. I have been colouring my hair for the last 20yrs. Natural shades, nothing weird or out there. What is the do's and don'ts of hair colour and care. Thanks for bringing France to me. 💞

Not all British women do but I think amongst the youth "overdoing it" is considered a bit cool ;) Some British women take a page out of the French or Scandinavian women's books as it were and enjoy keeping things simple, elegant and natural. But I suppose we do have quite a few different subcultures here as we are such a diverse country. For instance, some arty hipster types seem to enjoy dressing up in very retro, almost frumpy, clothes. When I worked in the fashion industry I noticed some women chose simple elegance (like the French) and some really enjoyed pushing the boundaries and going for more avant garde fashion and hair / make up looks. It's such a mixed bag! But I do agree that in some circles the fake tan and "more is better" approach is sadly quite popular! :/

Thank you for your review. One youtube makeup channel did a makeup look of a French women and then did one of an American woman. It was very funny. She showed American women use a ton of makeup. That was so true. The reason American women use so much makeup is competition since they have to sell themselves at every turn. French women often have "contracts of employment for life", free and affordable medical care for themselves and their children, free daycare, and pensions from the French government and don't spend their money on needless makeup. They have to budget every month to pay taxes to the French government, so they do not consume much. I live near Paris in the western suburb of Saint Germain-en-Laye. In the USA, makeup is sold and bought by American women for every cm of their face. They mostly try for a standard look according to the trend. The trend now is highlighters and eyebrows. One must glow and have thick brows. lol Few have the courage to be themselves. It's a lot easier to live in France and just emphasis your lips or your eyes if you choose. Most women do nothing at all except skin care. All the luxury makeup and skin care brands are sold at the major French corporations for 50% off. French pharmacies also promote Nuxe and Caudalie along with many other French skin care brands.
