P.s. I made a rainbow paranda out of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple yarn, and fishtail braided it in hair (being mindful of the color order) which made an awesome "rainbow trout". Have to try the french version!

Paranda Belle on LHC showed us the traditional way to put one in at the London meet-up, and she started with the knot half-way down her plait, so it eliminated her taper. In black hair with a black paranda it's pretty easy to conceal. On the silk yarn front, actual pure silk yarn is pretty expensive, but if you look for bamboo yarn it makes a great much cheaper alternative, I've got some very silky bamboo sock yarn.

I just tried this with some cheap polyester fabric that I cut into strips. So cute and fun! This could absolutely be done with hair extensions! I used to use a lot of extensions in my college days when I wanted long hair and it wouldn't grow. Then I had babies and pregnancy was good to me! My hair is now almost as long and thick as yours! :-). Love your videos!

You can get Indian parandis from any Indian clothing store or online. They usually have some yarn at the end with beads for decoration. Thanks for the video I have an Indian party coming up and I didn't want to just have a plain 3 strand braid!!

I finally made myself a paranda and did the French paranda braid. It works out so lovely and I love the fuller ends that I get instead of the very fine braid. Thanks a million Torrinpaige!

my thought regarding the extensions is that it would be very easy to make this out of kanekalon hair, and probably the best way to keep it on your head would be to sew on one of those little slide clips for clip-in extensions, which you can get from beauty supply stores. and then i realized that that would probably be a good thing to add to a paranda made out of any material!

Hurrah for this tut!! I've always fought with paranda. Turns out they weren't long enough. Now my BSL hair is in a braided bun. :) thanks!!!

I cut the original strand by holding it at my front hairline and cutting it a foot longer. By the time it's all braided in -it's only 5 or 6 inches longer than my braid. The second one I made longer, but didn't like it so long, so I just cut the ends off until I was happy. :o) I am getting some silk ribbon yarn after the holidays to see how it'll do.

I bought one years ago [never knew what they were called]. The pictures I saw showed a lady with her hair in a pony at the crown of her head. She loosened the paranda knot & then tightened it AROUND her pony holder. Then she split her hair and braided it up. Since her hair & the silk thread were both black, it looked like tons of really long hair. The one I bought had pretty beaded tassels at the ends. Some of them were really fancy, like hair jewelry, for weddings and such

This is something I think I might try at some point. my hair is in between shoulder length and BSL right now and medium thickness. I went to the salon last week to get my hair blown out before a friend's wedding and was told that my ends are a mess right now so having a style I can use that doesn't damage my ends any further than they already are is great.

I like it the most for saving my ends. I usually soft roll them when I go for braid waves so I don't end up with spaghetti ends, but this saves me from having to do that. Granted, I still soft roll when I want actually curls, but this is a nice alternative that offers no damage to the ends. I am so getting some silk yarn, though. The straight yarn is a little rough.

Hmmm, I wonder if it would be possible to make a paranda out of embroidery floss or if it would be too slippery to stay in well. (And probably a bit pricey) But just think of the endless color combinations!

You can probably go to Indian stores selling Indian suits or jewelry...I am from Malaysia, so I don't exactly know where in US...but yes, there's paranda made out of fake hair...something like extensions...and it definitely adds thickness to the braid...I have used a fake hair paranda and a yarn paranda with cute hangings at the end to braid my cousin's hair and then made it a bun for her wedding.... :)

I am currently having a lot of trouble with French braids since I have angles in my hair and the shortest one is located at the end of my chin. The sides don't want to stay in the braid. For this reason I typically like to braid my hair right after I wash it. The braid looks neater in general and I can place bobby pins where I think the sides might slip out after it dries. Oh and thank you for the cross over trick at the end. My braid lies much flatter than it used to :)

I love the paranda idea. I've tried it with the yarn several times, but always get the length wrong. About how many inches longer than your hair did you make yours? I like the length of your tail. Mine always turn out way too long for my taste. Also, has anyone tried making this with ribbon or ribbon yarn? Seems like it could work.

Yay! Head-eating buns! I do love parandas and the HUGE braids they give. I have a few made of yarn, but I want to wear them out, and I find they are often too obvious to me because of the thickness of the yarn compared to my hair. I'm going to try and make one with sewing thread instead.

I had no idea there was silk yarn! That sounds awesome for all sorts of projects. Can you get it in Michael's? I've never done a paranda, although I've tried similar stuff with just hair ribbons. Gotta check this out!
@MotionPictureMuse
@MotionPictureMuse 7 жыл бұрын
Oh yeah, you can make yarn of just about any kind of fiber. I've even spun yarn out of soy protein fiber-which, by the way, is very much like silk in weight and appearance! I don't believe Michael's carries silk yarn, but Joann's has a nice bamboo-silk blend that I've knitted with before. Pure silk yarn can be quite expensive, so a blend (or natural alternative like soy or cellulose) might be the way to go.

Regarding damp/wet hair. If my hair is only a bit damp (almost dry), it sticks to my hands and is hard to work with. If it's pretty wet (it doesn't have to be dripping, but wet through), it tends to separate nicely, braid nicely, not have flyaways and stay in the braid better. For French braiding it's a bit tougher to work with wet than dry, but not too much and it still takes care of the flyaways and stays neatly in the braid better than dry.

You could totally make a paranda out of braiding hair. It comes in a variety of colors, textures, and materials... I'd go for a high-quality synthetic, personally. Lots of braided styles popular in the black community use braiding hair to add thickness, dimension, pops of color, etc.

You may have to pull on that first loop a bit to tighten it down and then go a looser on the side that seems unbalanced. Sometimes I bun it -then twirl the whole bun until it's where I want it.

My hair's not quite BSL, and it is THICK, so I could never do a braided bun. This gave me enough length to get the bun, yay, and it's super solid. But the yarn totally disappears in the weave of the braid, so it just looks like a normal French braid with a big ol' yarn end. Maybe I need to focus on braiding it so it shows more.

It's just yarn -no brand name. I used up the last of a skein of my Gram's -to make one of mine - it was over half a skein. It depends on how long your hair is -so grab two to be sure. Just whatever kind you like. And yes, Walmart has yarn. I have two parandas and use them to do double braids for more waves.

I think you need to leave a longer end and wrap it around the bun along with the way you have it, and still leave the end with the bead/charm part hang out like a decoration. Cbazaar.com may have it. Google indian fashion stores. Toronto and GTA, Vancouver, I don't know for sure but check night metropolitan areas like NYC. Good luck :) .
