We actually use “le tout _______” in English as well. It’s very “literary,” but you’ll occasionally see it in places like the New Yorker or the New York Times, usually as a deliberately affected way of referring to members of high society: “Pamela Harriman hosted le tout Washington in her Georgetown salon.”

Hello, Angel. I have only just come across these posts of yours in the last week or two and I must tell you that I am already very favourably impressed by your contributions/comments and your attention to passing on to your subscribers the correct way of saying things in French. I do think that your motivation for achieving correctness in this area is very praiseworthy and I compliment you on your attention to detail. With that thought in mind and in a sincere, respectful and uncritical way, I would like to make a comment to you personally in the belief that you would wish to hear what I have to say and, I am sure, take steps to adjust. Maybe also to make emendments where it is necessary and possible. I noticed that there have been a number of occasions when you included in your comments, statements like ".... and the reason why this is incorrect" OR "... the reason why you must include the correct adjectival ending" OR "... the reason why the word is pronounced that way", etc etc. It is a sad fact that very many people use that format when speaking English and, of those who are in this category, the great majority are native-born English speakers. You, I am sure, will be interested to know that these are wrong. The correct way to make such statements is to say "The reason for this is THAT etc" The "Why" should be replaced by "That". Please do not be offended. On the whole, I think you are making a great contribution to broadcasting the message about correctness in French. You will understand that I try to emulate you when it comes to English.

The interview conversation speed was quite fast. It would be great if you can translate us what she said during pause, not just comment on her French mistakes. Language is used to understand what other people said. We want to know what she said. Thank you. The pop up French is great. They stay long so we can see what you meant.

Click on the settings and you will find an option to slow down the playback speed. That will help you understand the interview far better. Also, the main object of this video was not to point out mistakes but to introduce you to new idiomatic phrases. Providing translations to a video may go beyond "fair use" for educational purposes and infringe copyright rules.

Thanks for your feedback. Another way to get access to a translation would be to watch the original video and turn the automated translation feature on youtube.

@@frenchfluency I had already watched the original interview clip a few years ago and went back to check it. It is INA TV archive material and the CC closed captions feature is not enabled for that clip, which is why I suspected it falls under copyright laws. I watch clips like yours purely out of professional interest as I grew up bilingual and am a conference interpreter myself.

Oh la`la`la`la`, j'suis tant culottee que vraiment je pouvais demander un tel truc moi 😟🤨...!?! ) , Jodie Foster qu'elle ait en fait ses preferences - et que tout le monde devrait avoir le droit de choisir pour soi-meme - quant a` comment juste de faire allusion a` ce qui concerne son/le genre, telles que pour les prefs' qu'on en a peut-etre [des]quels pronoms qu'on a peut-etre preference en plus; pour autant que je sache la Greta🌟Garbo toujours, ou bien souvent au moins, elle se faisait allusion comme si elle eytait masculin lorsqu'elle se matait sur les "rushes" de chacun de ses films les plus derniers, et 'y a hyper belle lurette quoi 😁...! Mais sans besoin de dire, la Jodie F sa maitrise de la langue c'est au-dela` merveilleux; moi j'espere autant que je pourrais l'un jour 'fin devenir une fraction juste aussi accomplie qu'elle, je dois raconter 😊 Moi je viens de deycouvrir ta chaine archi-fabuleuse - en plus de m'avoir a` la abonnee - et en vrai deyja` j'adore trop moi 😁...! Les histoires d'enfants sont intéressantes et non les histoires des enfants sont intéressantes ;-) A native french speaker

Les deux options sont valides et ont un sens légèrement différent. "Les histoires des enfants" fait référence à des enfants particuliers, identifiés. "Les histoires d'enfants" a un sens plus général, on pourrait même envisager de mettre "d'enfant" au singulier, comme un archétype. A native French speaker with university degrees in French language 😜

You are correct. I often tell my clients that there is no such thing as perfect French, since even well educated native will make mistakes too.
