L'argent because I'm old and speaking any sort of slang would sound weird in my opinion when I am no where near fluent and much slang is only spoken in very limited circles. As in the UK I would sound weird saying "Wicked" for something that's great. I'm sure this is very very old now but I know what sounds ridiculous for me to say in English because I am English but not what would sound ridiculous in French. It's good to know these words though in order to understand dialogue. In terms of purely pleasant sound however "L'oseille" sounds like a nice word to my ears. Really appreciating these videos Alex. I come and go but just getting back into your videos again and I just adore Lupin the series and your explanations.

I suggest you try the song "Rap-tout vampires" by Les Inconnus (very well known French comedians), maybe find a video with the lyrics. It's full of slang words for money.

This is incredible! I know this must have taken a lot of time, and it is much appreciated. I am using Lupin with some of my French classes & these videos have been great to go through and pick out some words or phrases to hone in on with my students. (Since when I’m watching, it’s more for plot.) Thanks for saving this teacher time in creating new materials during a pandemic.

It’s also super interesting your take on “se foutre de la gueule de quelqu’un” when I listen as an American English speaker. We don’t have the expression “to take the piss” or “to mess someone about” in American English (but I love it, so perfect in some instances), so asking someone “Tu te fous de ma gueule?” would read to me more like, “Are you f__ing kidding me?!” Or nicer tone: “You’re kidding me, right?”

Yea it's "You're kidding me" but can also be like "you're messing with me" without a hint of a question. My girlfriend says it to me all the time because I say a lot of BS.

@@FrenchinPlainSight High school French mostly. They love the show. And I like that it shows them a more modern, diverse idea of France as well. My typical format for teaching tv and movies is vocab, describing characters, and then doing plot questions. I also will pull photos from it & ask them, for speaking quizzes, to tell me about what’s happening in the scene. Your videos gave me this idea to start pulling in slang - or really just synonyms for words they already know. For example, we’d covered l’argent & le fric, but I now have la thune & l’oseille, etc. Also gives a good opportunity to talk about verlan, like w ouf.

I have to wear compression stockings, but I enjoy wearing sandals. So, in the summer you will often catch me in socks and sandals. I'm in my 70s, so I don't really care whether or not it's a fashion faux pas!

I grew up in an area where it was « a la mode » to wear socks with sandals, in particular, Birkenstock’s. Our area was usually cool in terms of weather so I think it was part of our desire to live in a warmer climate, wearing sandals, but we still wanted to keep our feet warm. In other words, i don’t see anything wrong with it. Chacun voir midi à sa porte!

The slang use of "chaud" that I hear a lot is to mean something very difficult to accomplish given the time, as in this example from WR : Finir ce rapport de 120 pages avant la fin de la journée ? Ça va être chaud ! As to socks and sandals, it's definitely a fashion faux pas.

Hi Alex - this is brilliant thank you, really enjoying these videos to accompany the series. I have a question re episode 5 (no spoilers!) on the train Claire says to Assane 'à tout' he replies à ‘toutes’ (like a toot-ie), I searched for ' à toute', which gave examples of ‘tout à l'heure ' to mean a moment ago or in a moment, so in the context would ' à toute' be a contraction of 'tout à l'heure'? like in English to say ´in a minute'/à minute ago?’ because he is talking to his wife (informal and familiar). I have never heard this expression before (familiar with à bientôt), so I was interested in the use, but also because of learning about words being dropped and contraction of expressions from your videos. Definitely going to re-watch the series. Thanks, Simon.

Ça me fait penser qu'en France (il me semble), on a davantage tendance à dire "télécharger" pour dire "Download" et "mettre en ligne" pour dire upload, bien-sûr télécharger marche pour les deux situations mais en général on part du principe qu'on télécharge dans le sens "download"

For "rond", careful, it can only be used in the sentence "j'ai pas un rond" you can't say like "J'ai 1000 ronds" for example ^^ And if one day you come over someone saying "je suis completement rond", it means I'm drunk ^^
