Fresh is a 1994 American crime drama film written and directed by Boaz Yakin in his directorial debut, also produced by Randy Ostrow and Lawrence Bender. It was scored by Stewart Copeland, a member of the Police. The story revolves around a preteen boy named Michael, nicknamed Fresh (portrayed by Sean Nelson), who runs drugs for gangsters. Inspired by the chess lessons of his father, an alcoholic speed-chess master (Samuel L. Jackson), Fresh devises and executes a brilliant plan to extricate himself and his drug-addicted sister (N'Bushe Wright) from their hopeless lives.
BlackBusters is a podcast focused on reviewing, celebrating, re-living and critiquing Black film. From the movies we all know and love to those hidden gems, there is no movie too big or small to be praised or roasted.
Join our hosts Director/Comedian/Actor ‪@biggjah‬ and movie/podcast connoisseur Tony Price as they explore the legacy, impact and influence of Black cinema.

Fresh absolutely knew he was setting up chucky . They scene where is playing chess by himself he lost a knight . In the father son game is Dad said you love them knights , letting you know the knights was his favorite piece Chucky was his best friend . So when it fell in the self game he knew he was going lose that piece . He lost the knight and his friends and his innocence . His queen was definitely his sister , he could not afford to lose her . The theme is chess is a metaphor for life , you got to use everything at your disposal to achieve your goal . His goal was freedom for him and his sister and vengeance on Jake for old girl . Shawn Nelson should have got more work . Please watch the CORNER .

Idk about that but I’m cool with being wrong. He ain’t set up chucky he sacrificed him. Like his dad told him they all ya friends but u gotta be willing to let them go for the greater purpose, in chess and life. His dad warned him first about the queen, I agree that’s his sister and the knight is chucky, but I feel like fresh woulda left all them to get out. If chucky lived he can’t take chucky and if he felt his sister wasn’t worth it he would have let her go. He only need her to setup the plan he coulda told the cops she sell drugs with him

@@jahmaricampbell2791 like you said I could be wrong . Movies are subjective . But here is why I disagree with you on the sister . If she was expendable like that , that would have made fresh the same as all the other dope boys in the movie . A cold calculated , heartless killer . But we have the scene where he told his sister he loved her and she wasn't not nothing . Fresh couldn't let his queen go. She was the only thing he loved . I don't even think he loved himself because the dog was his metaphor and he killed the dog . Food for thought .

@2:46 His name in the movie was Michael, several people said it and he corrected them and told them to call him by his nickname. And another reason for the tears at the end could have been because Fresh might have been thinking about his father’s fate once certain people found out ‘that’s Fresh’s father’ and maybe the other relatives too since only Fresh and his sister were put into protective custody. Fresh was smart and most likely thought all that out before he acted. Chess pieces, everyone except his sister.

As a product of foster care let me clarify a couple things . Him hurrying to school was because he was on his last strike with his foster parent , his aunt . The cousin threatening him was to establish stakes in the movie . Fresh if you keep this up auntie is going to break us up and i am not going to another group home . She probably had to leave a family house and go to a group home before . They were all probably little freshes , they were in the streets before they lived at aunty house. They were on their best behavior because they had it good . His sister breaks my heart , they self hate was so well communicated . I bet fresh mom was a fiend too. Wouldn’t surprise me if some of the big timers had fresh mom too before she od’d . I knew fresh family dad and all . He showed emotion after the young girl was murdered . Their was a scene where he took a bath and layed in the bed naked if I remember right ,.

@@airpegasus5167 there was A weapon in the mattress but I don’t think it was a gun used in the murders. I think it was the gun fresh used to kill the dog. I think a guy like Esteban would have a top notch lawyer to fight the murder case. He’d have to do some time for the drugs but I’m willing to bet he would probably plead to a lesser charge and maybe even give someone up. He’s be out in 15 maybe 20. If I’m not mistaken Fresh much like She’s Gotta Have it and Straight Out of Brooklyn are art house Indy films. Sean Nelson works and Desi Hines wouldn’t is most because of their look. There was a natural sadness in Sean’s eyes and hardness to his face that Desi doesn’t have.

Regarding the writer, does being from the neighbor means you're from the culture? Because in your home with your parents, that's not "the culture", that's their culture from their homeland. What music did his parents play? What language did his parents use? What TV shows did his parents watch? I seriously doubt any of that was of our culture.
