This is a show about Asian fob stereotypes that takes place in the 1980s. So for all the people getting butthurt about it not being ''representative'' of the Asian population, or the mother's fake accent is ''off'', just know it's a COMEDY. So stop taking everything so literally. I missed the days when people watched comedies without overanalyzing it or getting their feelings hurt.

RussX5Z wow you are one sensitive butthurt baby. Calm down you're going to be ok. Be thankful that asians have the highest median income and have mostly positive stereotypes about them like being disciplined peaceful and intelligent. But consider the fact that no entertaining show is going to have all perfect characters because it would be boring. If you want asians on tv or in the movies then sometimes they will play negative roles.
@sugarkats219 жыл бұрын
First of all, Im Chinese. And I live in Canada. Just saying. Second of all, if the upset people actually read the comments from the Asians and Chinese people, you would see that almost no Asian here is offended. It's quite relatable if you are actually Asian. The non-Asians are more offended than the ASIANS THEMSELVES. Like what? I am totally stoked (had to) to watch this tbh!

This is a great show, I laughed so much & can't wait for the next season. Yes, it's all stereotypes but that's what makes it funny just like Everybody hates Chris. I love both shows but that doesn't mean I'm going to think all asians and african americans are the way the shows portray them to be. I take this for what it is: entertainment. As for people I meet whatever their race is, I'd rather acquire my own opinion after I get to know them instead of categorizing them by stereotype. Everybody's different.

if the accent is real I would not be able to watch this show and take it serious enough, and then this would just be a comedy with no heart because it'll always be funny and the emotional/serious aspect will be ruined. They made her accent easier (for lack of a better word) to understand for the audience(not just Asians).

I get your point, but after watching the show, I notice that the accent comes and goes sometimes. I just don't think it's a good fake accent.

It's embarrassing that an Asian can't even fake a proper Asian accent but I probably won't fault her since it's likely that ABC must have had a hand in ensuring that she had this pseudo-Asian American accent to pander to the general American audience.

From what I've seen on tumblr & trailers this show is pretty accurate to most immigrated asians (my mother and the show's mother are basically the same except my mom's not at all funny but you know, white people aren't her bffs). And tbh pretty accurate to White Americans' reactions to any asian person- even now, not just back in whatever time frame this was set in. I went to NY once (I'm Canadian btw born and raised) and literally everywhere I went white people POINTED at me and VERY LOUDLY went "OH MY GOD AN ASIAN PERSON" like, literally assumed I didn't know english so they thought I wouldn't understand their LOUD POINTING and just stared at me and some even laughed (didn't realize racism was so alive in america- what a great vacation) Definitely have to watch it now that I found out what it's actually called.

This isn't unique to us Asians as it applies to all people from every ethnic background. Just travel a bit and this will come out pretty loud and clear. Have you ever wondered why Brazil has the largest Japanese population outside Japan? Brazil had foreigners from Japan since the turn of the century. By that time, there was poverty everywhere in Japan and those who fled to Brazil where welcome to work in the coffee plantations. Not surprising since Japanese make up the largest community outside Japan. However this also applies to Japan's own racism against it's own people. Look at how poorly Okawanians' are treated in comparison to the mainlanders. Racism is distinct from ordinary bias because it was created as the justification for and original blueprint of a society in which race and class were pretty much the same thing. Class is how wealth and therefore power is organized. So, race and power are inextricable. So while parts of the original blueprint have changed over time. We built real structures, like our electoral college, ghettos, and suburbs, just to name a few examples. Which continue to dictate the way we live today based on that blue print. We can change our minds about it, but unless we dismantle and rebuild those structures, we’re stuck with the inequities they create. I struggled to but I question what this show is really trying to accomplish. It's merely preaching to the choir, just saying.

On 3rd episode, looking forward to seeing how all the characters get on. Fun show, and all the last lines are really funny. 30 minutes is just right. Time for a snack and onto the next episode. Congrats to all the actors and writers,

The title is an odd coincidence though. In Australia and New Zealand ''Fresh off the boat'' or simply ''FOB'' as a derogatory slur used to describe polynesian immigrants from nearby island nations(Samoa, Tonga, Vanuatu, Fiji etc.).
